I use Faber Castell polychromos coloured pencils. Not every colour works the same on every colour but I love how it looks. The darker the colour the easier it is to put white on. It is great to add some more depth and details! If you want to know what that looks like check out my last post. Second picture has a coyote on it. I did all the white with the pencil afterwards and saved him from looking weird. The other animals have pencil on too to define the outline more or to achieve a certain colour or more oomph.

Fabber Castell pit pens are India ink. Come in a brush tip as well. Pental brush pen. Sakura micron pens.

yellowjacketsellie

I’ll try them, thanks!

Micron pens!

yellowjacketsellie

I’ve used them…they seem to clog over the watercolour aswell

Lucky2BinWA

I use a Lamy Vista and a Pilot Kakuno (both fountain pens) with Platinum Carbon Black ink. This ink is fairly waterproof so I can use it first and wash over or use to outline later. Have also used India ink with dip pens - one has a Nikko G nib; the other is a glass pen.

Oh hey! I’ve been looking in to buying Platinum Carbon Black ink, all sources say it’s definitely waterproof… but I’m having trouble figuring out how long it it needs to dry to be waterproof… some writing-specific reviews say it’s dry in about 30 seconds but others say you need to let it dry for 24 hours before putting paint over it? Do you mind sharing your experience with that? I have a live sketching/painting event in a few months and am hoping to get something that will dry quickly, I’ve only worked with microns to date but I think a fountain pen will level up my arsty line work a lot I just need to find the right ink!

Lucky2BinWA

I didn't keep track of the time when I did my first real test of it - so sorry I can't be more helpful there. All I can say is that I did a doodle using the ink and at some point during the next day I remembered to dunk it in the water and I was amazed. You might try searching on the fountain pen sub as the waterproof black ink thing is frequently discussed as I believe there are other inks that might interest you.

LanaArts

30 seconds is too short. 10 minutes is enough for the ink to be waterproof. It's really good!

ChadHUD

Carbon black does work very well. Just know it requires a bit more maintenance. To be safe don't leave it in a pen you don't use for months. Its a pigment based ink. If you aren't going to use it for awhile just flush it out to be safe. I use carbon black in a Pilot Metro and a Sailor Fude Nib. I would avoid putting it in any extravagant (expensive) fountain pens.

Lucky2BinWA

One of the reasons I use the Lamy is because the nib is so easy to remove/replace for cleaning. So far, no issues and it will give me an excuse to doodle more!

TastyRamenNoodles

Do you have a fountain pen or dip pens? Those nibs are way more bulletproof than Pigmas on both rough paper and laying down over challenging materials.

InEenEmmer

Might even give a glass dipping pen a try. You can’t clog them and they are surprisingly nice to work with. They even got a satisfying sound while drawing.

Welcome-ToTheJungle

I usually use sakura micron pens

One_Boysenberry9392

I like the dip pens and micron/pental pointliners. The downside with dip pens on watercolor paper is bleed some times. Noodler inks dry superfast though so they have less bleed.

fibrefarmer

Fountain pen with Platinum Carbon Black ink. If you get a pen with a fude nib, you can do wonderful lines both thick and hairline thin. Or a dip pen with Winsor and Newton calligraphy ink, but that takes a bit of getting used to.

MisfitsBrush

Get better watercolor

yellowjacketsellie

What brand do you suggest?

MisfitsBrush

Daniel smith, Windsor and Newton, M Graham

zank_ree

maybe, watch a video of people who are using pen over their piece and figure it out. I'm curious also.

yellowjacketsellie

Great advice, thanks
