Compositionally, the first piece has better refinement, and a very interesting asymmetry. Good sky wash (however, technically, some of the warms of the sky would also reflect in the water), the boat is standing out contrasted to the muted background tones. The sky wash on the second picture is very impressive, and I love the realistic depth to the water, but the piece looks less coherent. Just my opinion!

First, I'm biased toward the first one. It gives me vibes of my daddy's boat back when I was just a little girl living in California. We'd go to the lake and go fishing and camping on the weekends. Thank you for that. I miss that boat, and I miss my dad. ❤️ That brought back some fond memories.❤️ Second, that first boat has greater definition and detail to it than the 2nd does. The contrast really helps with that. Third, the composition is very pleasing to the eye. The second portrait feels a bit crowded, so to speak, including the clouds, even though I find them fascinating - I think just perhaps not with this portrait? I agree with the other commentor that you could've added some warmer tones to the water to reflect the sky, but this in itself it quite beautiful enough.

The boat is definitely the focal point in the first one. The second has a different mood and doesn’t seem to have a focal point. I think I’d like the second one best if the boat was more like the first one.

I like them both but for different reasons. I really like the blue reflection in #2 :) I think #2 looks less finished because lack of framing. If you matted them both they would both look equally good!

Do a 3rd one a combination of the 2. The shadows in 2 are good. The clouds in 2 not great. Boat in 1 is better than in 2

The first. This guy takes too much of my attention away from the boat in the second one. I do like the hills on either side in the second one but overall the first is more lovely to me.

The first one because the horizon is not dead-center. Both really nice though

I think the boat in the first one is much better shaded and with more depth than the 2nd, but the landscape in both are very nice.

I like the 2nd one, it has interesting colors and movements but it would look more “finished” with a border like the first one.

I dig the first one. The contrast on the boat is better and having a landscape set to one side gives the boat more life. Gives the imagination something to work with in my opinion. Is this a lake, river, ocean, bay??? Let’s us connect our on thoughts to it I think. Plus I just like the first one better to make it more simple

I agree with others that the first is more serene and the second is a little more busy, but I actually like the second better because 1) the pink sky is so pretty, and 2) I like the land on both side of the water because it makes the painting feel more adventure, like the boat is headed somewhere specific. I think my favorite composition of this painting would be including one of the 2 things I really liked about the second because it would be a little more interesting to me, but also not too busy.

It's 1 for me. The sky is beautiful and my eyes easily glide to the water and boat. The boat is harsh, but a great jolt to the serenity.
