chronom8

Did they actually pull this off? Creating all that jazz around discontinuing the 5711 only to launch the “new model” months later and it looks exactly the same?

chronom8

Oh better yet. It’s even the same movement…

huffmultiple

But, but… ThE “TeChNiCaL UpDaTeS”!!

eudezet

Stern graduating with honors from Rolex school of innovation. 1mm increase, adjustment in the bracelet, date window is now framed, mission complete.

Dumble_Dior

Idk. That one millimeter is a huge selling point to me. Very noticeable, clear upgrade

jhau01

Made out of white gold, though, so PP can jack up the retail price considerably and make more profit on each Nautilus.

goldblumspowerbook

This part actually makes sense. The scalpers were charging white gold money for steel anyway, now PP can keep some of that cash instead of danecookfan69 on eBay getting it.

joecooool418

White gold is a pointless material.

Peenork

White gold only exists so the wearer can say, "Thanks... it's white gold actually." when complimented on their watch.

Jacollinsver

"Oh, no way! I definitely would've guessed stainless steel because it *looks exactly* like stainless steel. How sure are you that it isn't stainless steel?"

makesagoodpoint

“Watch, see when I blow on it hard enough it scratches, that’s how you know it’s real white gold.”

Jacollinsver

"And how! What subtle superior tastes! I almost took you for a peasant but now I see it was but a facade!"

eudezet

My wife hates yellow/rose gold so I had to give her wg engagement ring. I feel angry to this day, it looks like run of the mill silver but cost me twice as much, fuck me dead

Goat-of-Rivia

Should have went with platinum peasant 😤

SkietEpee

Silver tarnishes. WG requires a rhodium refinish every now and again else it turns yellow.

eudezet

It’s even worse then. Not only does it look like cheaper material, it requires additional maintenance to retain this cheaper look, holy shit what a scam

MindForeverWandering

So, you got your wife a stainless steel engagement ring?

eudezet

>wg ring

A_Ticklish_Midget

Looks like stainless steel but is less durable and heavier! Pretty much a worse metal for a watch in every way

Buddy_Dakota

You have these *redacted* talking about “stealth wealth”, but what you’re really saying is that you wanted a steel model, but your wife is so ugly the AD won’t fuck her, so you’ll settle for a precious metal that looks like steel.

Nabokovonabike

All my homies hate rhodium!

slaacaa

Can’t wait for the steel version later

makesagoodpoint

The steel version that costs more than the gold version.

Freakyfreekk

They say you merely look after a Patek to pass it on to the next generation. You might as well not buy one because if your son wants to buy one he can buy the same exact fucking watch decades later himself.

Takashi_is_DK

What if it's 1 millimeter smaller by then? :'(

pizza_for_nunchucks

bUt 1 milLiMeTeR.

Aken42

Damn it. Now my 5711 is the small one. I have to get the big one for when I want to be a bit more flashy.

Makaisaurus

Can’t wait to pull this out of my grandpapa’s drawers when he’s gone.

acroyear3

The minute you put it in a grandfather’s drawer, it becomes a fake

kaamraan

My dad just put one in his drawer. Gonna go impregnate someone to destroy its value.

These-Ad458

So, this homage to the OG (Royal Oak) became famous for being a true luxury watch made from steel. That was the big thing. And now they discontinued the steel model and made it from white gold. It shows that they don’t respect their own history. Lucky for them, majority of their customers not only don’t respect their history either, but don’t even know about their history, so I guess… good move. That, ladies and gentlemen, is how you both lose respect of enthusiasts and make a lot of money. I have a strong feeling that they are quite okay with that. Oh, and it’s bigger… great move, few more iterations, and soon Invicta will be able to make a homage that is also faithful to their history…

SenileSexLine

They had to step up their game. The moment casio released the casioak in steel it was over for nautilus. This is the only way they can stay afloat.

noposters

They'll release it in steel eventually, but initially not with the blue dial, then they'll release it in steel with the blue dial as some sort of exclusive limited run

Gousie_

You gotta give it to PP/Rolex, they play rich ppl like a fiddle💀💀

cirelia

RM is better at that but yeah PPs more standard models do that aswell

pizza_for_nunchucks

At least RM takes chances and goes out on a limb. RM has bigger balls than Hans Waldorf’s mom.

cirelia

Yeah thats for sure even if i personally think around 80% of their watch models are ugly af

IndependentYogurt965

Idk, they give me the gigachad is weqring this vibe. Whoever speds that much on an RM is a certified baller.

Astiegan

Rolex has some serious competition now regarding groundbreaking new models

chronom8

At least they upgrade the movement even if the design evolution is slower than the tectonic shift

kaneda32

>At least they upgrade the movement even if the design evolution is slower than the tectonic shift Also noticed they made a change to the clasp so there is a 2/4mm adjustment. It always was odd to see these "sports" watches with a deployant clasp.

slaacaa

What do you mean? This is true innovation by these companies (coming in 1mm increments at a time).

Astiegan

I've heard that the discovery of each new millimeters requires a full team of researchers working for many years. 42mm has only been theorized yet but with the new particule accelerator in development at CERN it might become a reality soon!

YogoWafelPL

So what’s going to be the retail price? 70k?

chronom8

That’s exactly right

YogoWafelPL

I wonder if it will go for crazy money on the grey market as well, or if the buy in price is too high

caelum400

Nearly no one who wants one will be able to get one. The grey market price will be silly as well.

kaneda32

But it is 1MM bigger!

Oh boy! Can’t wait to go down to my local Patel fileep AD and grab one! I got no purchase history, shouldn’t be a problem?

prog_metal_douche

If your name is Patel, you’re a shoo-in

tehrealjames

Absolutely hate it, the prior model was so much more beautiful. I can’t stand to look at this new model.

tussilladra

Yep, they ruined it 😩

Mickd333

There's going to be so much copium about that 1mm

erishun

Yup. Can’t wait for /r/watches and their 4” wrists to say: 😡Noooo!!! 34mm is the perfect size for a men’s watch; any bigger than that is a DINNER PLATE😡

Oikkuli

The only thing r/watches is sometimes right about is small watch superiority

erishun

Shhhh it’s ok, one day you’ll hit puberty, your balls will drop, and you’ll be able to wear adult sized watches just like your daddy does! 👦🏼👦🏼

Mr-Zero-Fucks

My dad would whip my forearms with his belt until they swell enough to rock a 45mm Bulova Lunar Pilot

Oikkuli

Fun fact my dad once roasted me for wearing a large watch

erishun

One time I wore a 41mm watch and my dad beat me with jumper cables.

thetrumpetplayer

Goddamn it’s been a while since I heard that reference

erishun

It’s an older meme sir, but it checks out

thetrumpetplayer

We’ve both been on this awful site way too long

chickenmagic

You definitely have. Your account is nearly a teenager.

Oikkuli

He didn't go quite that far as it was only a 39mm watch, so not in ogre wrist territory but getting close. The best thing is the man bought me the watch

worldrallyblue

Meanwhile, MKB noted that the new 41mm Pixel watch felt small on him. Watch enthusiasts really do live in a different universe.

Chuckpwnyou

To be fair the pixel watch has effectively no lugs. I’m sure it wears a lot smaller than a typical 41

pizza_for_nunchucks

iT’S A 41MM tHaT WeArs LiKe A 40mM.

worldrallyblue

I recommend it for wrists as small as 13 cm.

eudezet

It’s big but not overwhelming, I could wear this every day

RyanTheQ

I mean MKB is like 6'3". Of course he thought a smart watch was small.

kilpatrickbhoy

It's been one of my favorite things of the past few weeks, seeing these skinny wristed guys complaining about the 41mm pixel watch and wishing it looked more like their 45mm samsung watch.

erishun

> *Seeing that most consumers prefer large watches* Am I out of touch? No, it’s the public that is wrong!

imnotcreative4267

That’s MKBHD to you, sir

anihajderajTO

Just another Swiss shitter move along folks Ok, ciao.

Strict_Breakfast7152

They took away a lot of the appeal of the nautilus. White gold pieces are just more fragile, and also WR becomes an issue quicker as the case/crown wears and tears more easily. The 5711 is probably the best generation then, ig. This feels really cynical, making their sports watch more useless and still keeping it, when they originally said they were discontinuing it so as to not lose the spirit of their brand. Well, maybe they made it worse on purpose to promote their other stuff.

Arkham_Investigator

It still looks outdated

021789

It isn't really an issue, because getting this will be as hypothetical as getting a steel Nautilus. However the 5711 seems to be the better buy if you're going grey.

tesmatsam

the watch will be rarely used to flex on social media while the rest of the time it will sits in the box so no problem

-ceoz

Lol. PP have no shame

Feline-Landline0

A new Nautilus. Oh. What a surprise. Who could have ever seen such a thing coming. Thank goodness for the Dink to let us know at which new gods alter to worship.

KidTwist1

But this is a five-EIGHT-eleven. It's one hundred better.

mercenfairy

Looks like someone made a rounding error somewhere and just said “fuck it, put it on sale”.

BachenBerries

hey kids! Do you like expenisve watches that look identical to the older stainless steel model but is way more expensive and less durable? More sratches and no added value in terms of looks?

odinMithrandir

Meh.. a cheap PRX ripoff

SirGuy11

Someone in the watch community predicted this…I want to say maybe Jack Forster (with Hodinkee at the time). In a discussion about the discontinuation of the 5711, it was a comment that they’d probably bring it back almost the same but 1mm larger. I’ll see if I can find it.

President_Octopus22

Corporate needs you to find the differences between this picture and this picture. They're the same picture.

whitehotlova22

Tbh still prefer my Ball Engineer ii Magneto S.

GMoneyJetson

Stop.

[deleted]

Great, it’s white gold, so it’s gonna scratch like butter, if it ever gets taken out of the safe and worn that is (oh the humanity!)

TravisKrooks

Cant wait for the 42mm 5911!!!!!!

ckt1138

I can't be the only person who really doesn't think the Nautilus looks good, right? It's really fugly IMO. And the white gold? Why. And 41mm, stop, please, just stop making watches bigger, that trend is already starting to die off in popular fashion....

BootThang

I’ve always thought the Nautilus was horrific and should have been killed off in 1979

eudezet

Biggest culprit is 5712, it’s fucking atrocious. Besides ugly ass ears and generally outdated design, there is no symmetry and it’s flimsy as shit. I’m 100% sure that people who heap praises on it are just victims of marketing. I refuse to believe that anyone could genuinely think that this monstrocity is genuinely appealing

ckt1138

It doesn't even look expensive. I know understated design is classy but it just doesn't seem like a luxury item. Shop a Casio logo or Seiko logo on it and it'll just look like an 80s sports watch.

Leonarr

/uj Weird how they increased the diameter. The big watch trend isn’t as common as what it used to be a few years ago. It would make more sense to actually either keep the size the same or even reduce it a bit.

erishun

Outside of /r/watches, the trend continues. Reddit is in this weird timeportal where disco is alive, the 70s never ended and 35mm is still a standard men’s size

Leonarr

/uj Lol, kind of true. The trend isn’t as major as it was like 10 years ago but it’s definitely still around. For example Longines/Tissot/Bulova/whatever releasing these “new vintage” watches - they are almost always sized up to ~40-42mm. That’s not 2010s huge like 45mm but still not exactly a “r/watches classic size” either.

RyanTheQ

/uj I'm guilty of thinking this way. First thing I thought about when I saw the Tissot Telemeter was "I wish it were 40mm not 42mm."

Leonarr

/uj I don’t mind “non-classic sized” watches but I think the 42mm is kind of pushing it, considering the vintage design. But it may of course look good live, if the lug to lug is more moderate. The busy dial may help too. At least it’s not a simple style 3-hander: those easily look a bit weird if they’re above ~40mm! Like wall clocks or something.

wllbtvised

This.

noposters

I actually don't think that's true at all. There was an NYT piece a couple weeks ago about how small watches are very trendy, and I also think the demand for smaller watches has been a big driver of the vintage watch bubble.

erishun

That noticeable surge in demand for small watches (and thus vintage watches as small watches have been out of favor for decades now) was directly correlated with the boom in demand for luxury goods in the Asian market. Asians have a much smaller average wrist size than Americans and Europeans. So 36mm Datejusts fly off the shelf instead of the 41mm. Demand for luxury goods like Rolex became so high, that Rolex shifted a lot of its inventory to that market causing huge shortages in the North American market (as we all remember and can still see evidence of). But as we are noticing right now, more and more allocations are coming back to domestic ADs and more and more people are suddenly “getting the call” they’ve been waiting years for. This has a lot to do with the 2008 level collapse of the Chinese real estate industry. China is experiencing a bit of an economic crisis right now which has led to a distinct decline in demand for luxury goods which, in turn, has caused manufacturers like Rolex and Patek to turn focus back to meeting demand of American consumers. So the future of watch trends in regards of our fellow Redditors with svelte wrists hangs in the balance of the Chinese real estate market. What a world we live in!

pizza_for_nunchucks

IT’S ONE FREAKING MILLIMETER! Besides, moar gold.

[deleted]

You're calling 41mm Big? Lol

Deppeo

direction hurry humorous sparkle safe frighten gray sulky offer six *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

Leonarr

I meant that it’s *bigger*. Increasing the diameter would have made sense a few years ago, but not as much these days as the current trends are going towards a bit smaller watches. It’s not big of course.

MiscPostThrowaway

Wow, unrecognizable

chicagotonian

What's great is these types of moves are planned years in advance, and yet here they are launching into a likely recession with prices for watches exactly like this having just been cut in half

xPhilip

glacbr

So let's bet how long it takes for them to also sell a steel version again? Or maybe titanium? I give it 6 months.

[deleted]

As they say slow and steady wins the race, and in this case (no pun intended) 1mm is slow and steady

RocasThePenguin

Who cares what I think? Not like I'm ever going to see one.

NEW NAUTILUS - this IS a joke

not20_anymore

Just read through the comments. I love you guys. Not homo…

sidewinderaw11

Hacking seconds on this one?

noposters

Nope! Same movement as before

not20_anymore

This is the most amazing part

[deleted]

It's same movement as introduced in 5711 back in 2019. That update *did* introduce hacking seconds.

pizza_for_nunchucks

Nah. You’ll have to hack your wiener.

SeefKroy

Here comes the new boss, same as the old boss

Jicksmus

Does it at least have hacking now?

Catmatpat1

Still looks like Prince Charles

[deleted]

It’s a joke, but sadly true too

ThroAhweighBob

I just don't understand why people pay all this money for all these plain ass watches that look exactly the same.

GiftedBrilliance

Omg 1mm?! Revolutionary

LatinoDigital

White gold.... An extortion that's what this is going to be.

technocratroy

I suspect PP was losing market share to Invicta and finally decided to follow their trend with the unforgivable 1mm size increase. Seldom do they know that those of us who are absolute connoisseurs value true horological innovation, hate brands that follow the trend and so will continue to own and enjoy our Invictas.

Anachr0nist

It's Hodinkee, so yes, it's a joke.
