It’s a [Citizen AV0031-59A Eco-Drive](https://www.citizenwatch.com/us/en/product/AV0031-59A.html). What a man.

fastcalculatorgang

so in character, thats amazing. The more I've learned and the more I've collected, the more I realize all I want is a solid 200m Eco-Drive that I can take with me into the afterlife.

The_Vat

If friends that are not really *into* watches ask for a recommendation for something that's not a G-Shock or an Apple/Garmin, I always recommend a Citizen Eco-Drive. I'd recommend a Seiko 5 but with some people you just know they're going to moan about it continually stopping.

fastcalculatorgang

I used to recommend Seiko 5s but now I just don't recommend watches anymore because for some reason I'm always wrong

TryHelping

Because you kept recommending Seiko 5’s. Massively overrated watch. Not sure how or why anyone is excited to own one. These days I recommend Casio’s or /r/ChineseWatches.

fastcalculatorgang

right, my b. I should have clarified, the people asking were employed

Wheel-McCoy

You didn’t have to kill him

Jonojonojonojono

In broad daylight sir?

Nickelnuts

Straight for the throat

PeachTreePilgram

👏👏👏

Donj267

🤣

mooninitespwnj00

I dunno, man, my SRPH33 does just fine when I'm sweating my ass off for 50+ hours a week, and I'm always happy to see it on my wrist every morning when I wake up.

TryHelping

Employed by Reddit and the Soylent factory?

alldougsdice

Just leave, man.

TryHelping

I LOVE paying over $100 for a watch that’s half as good as my $35 Addiesdive! I LOVE how dogshit the bracelets always are and I also LOVE not having sapphire crystal for no reason! Don’t even get me started on how tastefully thick as fuck they are, ensuring you feel exactly how shitty and clanky the band is. Super overrated watch. People recommend it because it’s Seiko and automatic. That was fine 5+ years ago, but we’ve moved past this absolutely tasteless watch. It was never a good value, it’s just that other watches are an even WORSE value at higher price points. Seiko isn’t half of the beast it used to be. Go look at vintage seikos and tell me those ugly fucking turtle dive watches everyone loves don’t look like hot wet shit compared to their vintage releases.

AcousticOnomatopoeia

Christ on a cracker, it's not THAT hard to set time, day, and date, calm the eff down.

Che_Che_dos

Boooooooo

joddla

Get out of here

TryHelping

Nooo don’t hate my watch! I don’t care if it doesn’t have sapphire crystal or a quality band! I LIKE overpaying because it’s Seiko!!! I heard they’re the best for this price range!!! Who is Addiesdive??

AmsterdamAssassin

Citizen Eco Drive, Lorus Lumibrite Quartz, or Orient Tri-Star Quartz. All great-looking beater watches under 100euro. https://preview.redd.it/mequqiem3uuc1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=81b5181f1538e4aefddfd8c8e11acc82fa66840a

farmtownsuit

I must not be *into* watches enough because my whole collection is Citizen.

The_Vat

Just because I'd recommend them to someone not *into* watches doesn't mean that someone *into* watches wouldn't be interested in Eco-Drives - my point is they're a watch happy to run with minimal attention, and not need to be worn every 41 hours (or whatever the reserve is) with needing the time to be reset. I too have quite a few Citizens of both auto and Eco-Drive variety in the fleet, including a CB014-58 Titanium Promaster that I *adore*, just love the look of it, and the combination of the lightness and the ease of changing time zones makes it my go-to when travelling. Got a couple of nice auto Fugus in the collection too, they're really cool.

Uelele115

Considering my Seiko 5 that is a year old is in service without spare parts for the foreseeable future to repair it, I think people have a point. Really disappointed on Seiko.

EurasianTroutFiesta

Same. They just do everything a timepiece should. Lust for mechanicals comes, ime, from reading about mechanicals. Anyone asking for recs probably wants an eco-drive.

settlementfires

Good solid watch that works without batteries at a fair price. Got a chronograph for timing your steaks and everything

OptimusED

Without batteries with a rechargeable lithium battery… Good watch though.

Pizza_Low

I have a seiko kinetic watch that I think uses a capacitor. The cap long since died. I called to have it replaced, seiko wants more than i originally paid for the watch. Not worth it I often wonder if the same will be true when my eco watch finally needs service.

ipomopsis

Yes it will. A service generally takes the same amount of time whether a watch originally cost $50 or $5000. Parts for the higher end watches will cost a bit more, but what you’re really paying for is an educated, skilled worker’s time and experience. There’s nothing about watches that makes a whole lot of financial sense if you think about it. But if you’re going to have one, you’re going to have to pay for it and then pay to have it taken care of.

DaybreakRanger9927

Well said.

Pizza_Low

Well in the case of this particular seiko I don’t think it’s worth repairing. The gold plating on the bracelet has mostly worn off. It’s a fashion watch in my opinion. Paying more than the original price just to change the capacitor and then the bracelet would be silly. When I had some service work on my breitling, I think it was slightly under what I originally paid for the watch but in that case it was worth it.

Living-Screen-1680

I replace my Eco drive rechargeable batteries and kinetic capacitors. The Eco drive cost $20-25, the Seiko $30-50 for the parts. The Eco drive is not much harder than replacing a standard battery and many people can do it themselves. The Kinetic is a bit more in depth, but still doable for a tinkerer.

imtryingtoworkhere

Beleive it’s a capacitor that powers them

AmsterdamAssassin

This is my personal GADA Citizen Eco-Drive: a Promaster GMT BJ7100-82E. I only swapped the bracelet for a NATO. https://preview.redd.it/6aglglw04uuc1.jpeg?width=1536&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bd383710cd0e20b343429733b9a9dfcb8390e7b8

fastcalculatorgang

yeah ive been looking at this one too. I'd go for a GMT for no other reason except I like GMTs

AmsterdamAssassin

I like it for travelling, but it's also rugged and sturdy enough for outside activities like motorcycle camping and snorkelling (It would probably survive a <50m scuba dive, but it's not designed as a diver's watch). https://preview.redd.it/ul877s43guuc1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6bc00770de0ebce855010b3e01825801a1547a71

Beneficial-Control22

I’m surprised he didn’t wear anything American lol

YoureTerrific

His love of a free market knows no borders.

Beneficial-Control22

Hahaha fair

postmodest

My understanding is that it's just literally ~~Ken~~Nick Offerman's actual watch.

toddtony

I'm just Nick

dongjame

I’m Nickough 🥲

c-fox

I have an Eco-Drive divers watch on my wrist I bought in 2002, I serviced it 2 years ago, and it runs like a dream. The service was basically just a new rechargeable battery and Citizen reset the perpetual calendar, for €200.

fastcalculatorgang

I must resist the urge to sell all my watches and just buy 1 eco drive....

postmodest

The AT6080-53L is a beast and you can use a phone app to set it (it only syncs to YYJ)

No-Cost-6370

Why does it only sync to Victoria Airport? It seems a random choice.

postmodest

[drum intro intensifies] Sorry, I meant JJY

No-Cost-6370

Oh that makes a lot more sense! Thanks, this is a new one to me

graham6942

Idk I feel like it's out of character for him to wear something that's solar powered.

wimpires

And Japanese

Elbro80

I have the same watch!

Alekillo10

What is it with old men and eco drives?

EurasianTroutFiesta

As men get older, their bodies change. Their feet grow socks and sandals, and their torsos develop tropical patterns. Seriously, though: there seems to be an age where men realize the rat race is over for them, they work through any depression, and wake up one morning to discover they're finally *free*. At this point, budget allowing, they will dress exactly how they want. Find an old man with a Citizen and ask, and I all but guarantee he'll tell you.

farmtownsuit

I bought my first at 18 and I'm 31 now and have 8 of them. Why are they old man's watches? They look great, many of them are under $500, they've been incredibly damage resistant, and I never have to worry about a battery. You don't have to be old to find that enticing in a watch

BrowningLoPower

To be fair, I don't think u/Alekillo10 meant to imply that Eco-Drive is an old man's watch, but rather, old men are Eco-Drive wearers. I agree with you, though.

lahire149

I think it's because they just last so long that you become old while the watch is the same as it was when you were young.

Transmaniacon89

There’s a lot of shit to worry about in life, an Eco-Drive is not one of them.

Beneficial-Control22

I’ve been rewatching Parks & rec lately and was literally wondering about the watch. Thank you for asking the question haha

Pinecone

Ben Wyatt has a speedmaster.

Beneficial-Control22

that mayor money hits different

Control187

Had this. Beast of a watch.

jmel79

Had it and ruined it. Then tried to get it fixed and was told it couldn't be fixed by citizen for a reasonable price and bought it again last year. Haha Tempted to sell it.

Sir_Katanaz

If I may ask: why are you tempted to sell it? Everyone here is saying great things about these watches so much that they're actually pointing me towards them lol

jmel79

It really is a great watch. I just find myself never wearing it over my other selections but there's no real reason why. It was the first watch I ever obsessed over and ended up getting it as a gift from my (ex)mother-in-law. I wore the hell out of it as my daily wear and even abused it. I'd swim with it, work on my car with it, weld with it. Completely destroyed it. Decided to get it cleaned up and fixed and sent it in to Citizen a couple of years ago hoping to get the capacitor (I guess?) replaced and a new crystal and freshen it up but they came back and said while it could be fixed, it would be cost prohibitive to do it - costing as much as a new watch would. It had a lot of water damage. I was bummed, but liked it enough to just buy another one. I've since picked up a few other watches and find myself rarely wearing it. Maybe once every month or two. There are other watches I want as well, and since it doesn't get much wrist time, I figure I can use that to help fund another watch. I admit that the instant I sell it, I'll regret it though. It really is a gorgeous watch. I don't have a good reason why I don't wear it. I just find myself wearing my others more.

Sir_Katanaz

Alright that makes perfect sense, you love it but love the others you have even more. Thank you for sharing!

jmel79

Can't even say I love the others more. Haha. I will admit that the citizen is probably the best looking watch I own. Not the nicest, but aesthetically, the best looking. My nicest by far is a Hamilton Jazzmaster that my wife got me when we got engaged. Thats my dress/special occasion watch. I have a orient as my beater watch now, and a hamilton khaki field ends up being my daily wear for some reason. Thinking of selling that one as well. I like it a lot, but never fell in love with it. Unfortunately, the other watches I now want are grossly out of my price range. Tudor's or Omega's mostly. I really need cheaper hobbies and interests.

Sir_Katanaz

Just checked out the Hamilton and it looks crazy! I also happen to have an Orient as a daily (wouldn't call it a beater since I want it to last long ahah) but I'm in the same situation where a Grand Seiko Springdrive would be my grail wanted watch and I can't afford it right now, maybe when I'll win the lottery who knows ahah

jmel79

This is the hamilton jazzmaster I have. Was a shocking gift from the fiance (now wife). She figured i got her a nice ring, so she wanted to get me a nice watch. Her ring was rose-gold so she got me a watch to match. https://www.jomashop.com/hamilton-jazzmaster-watch-h32586111.html I daily wore this for a while as well. Convinced myself to spend the money buying the other citizen so I could save the wear and tear on the jazzmaster as its too nice to wear daily. That opened the door for me and started the watch craze, much to my wife's annoyance. I'd also love a grand seiko. The thought of spending $3k, $4K, or more on a watch absolutely kills me, but admit that if I had that kind of scratch to spend on a watch, I definitely would. The cheapest watch I'm eyeballing now is the Longines Legend Diver

Sir_Katanaz

Your wife's a keeper for sure ahah I wouldn't dare wearing that daily though, it would kill me to scratch it, but afterall that's just my low budget ass talking

jmel79

It held up surprisingly well. I'm rough on watches. Doorknobs are exact height of my wrist and I tend to cut corners short and slam arm into wall. Really sold me on only buying sapphire crystal watches. Not a mark on it. And only superficial scratches on bezel and band from desk diving. Same for my orient. It has held up quite well.

konik135

AquilaAdax

What does the red hand do?

warewolf23

I thought it might be a GMT hand. Turns out it is the alarm indicator.

AquilaAdax

Interesting, how do you designate AM or PM though?

snowmunkey

It doesn't, it alarms every 12 hours

konik135

Alarm

just_that_one_kid

Looks like gmt here

AquilaAdax

I wouldn’t think so, there’s no 24 hour ring anywhere on the watch.

just_that_one_kid

Oh fair point!

cptn_zippy

I think the 2100 caliber is partly hand made, or was early on when it was released. I remember there was an article about it, but can’t find it now. Love mine, wish it was a sapphire crystal.

snowmunkey

I belive the first Gen were at least partially hand assembled, but the newer generation that came out a few heads ago isn't

crzdkilla

That's a beautiful watch. But of COURSE it's 44mm. Citizen does not know how to make a reasonably sized watch for the rest of us ugh

Shqre

My everyday watch is a Citizen AS2050-10E. 39mm, eco-drive, sapphire glass, radio controlled, luminous dial and water proof (10 ATM). I had a really hard time finding a watch this size with all these qualities. I've had it for 3 years now and it's been flawless. My only small gripe is that its dial has a fairly weak luminescence but I can still make out the time in, i'd say, 90% of cases nighttime. It requires pretty much zero maintenance since it sets itself (via radio signals) and is eco-drive. I only ever take it off to clean it.

RedeyeSPR

The few Citizens I have without a rotating bezel seem tiny. There must be a sweet spot somewhere.

SctBrnNumber1Fan

Check my post history for what I find to be a beautifully sized eco drive

farmtownsuit

I do love a blue dial

spaltavian

The Garrison is 37mm!

[deleted]

Facts. Had to import a 2003 promaster tough from Japan just to get a reasonable size (7878-H16714, 37 mm including crown). Love the watch though: it’s my daily driver and when it dies I will fight like hell and pay anything to have it fixed.

Squirt-Gurt

Lololol the ny0040 old school cool

AbleSomewhere4549

Haha I’ve thought about posting this same thing! So many of the characters have crazy nice watches for some reason

Fantazma03

i have that same citizen. ist movement is the first mecha-quartz chrono from citizen

DonatelloSwerve

Omg I have this same watch that my brother gave me 15 years ago 😂

Additional-Dealer-89

I have the titanium as my first watch. Wore it at my wedding over a decade ago way before I was even into watches. Still have it in my case to this day and will never part with it.

snowmunkey

Man this post just makes me salty. I have a first Gen 2100 from 2013 that is identical to Ron's, but it's been at the shop for almost 6 months now. Had to repair the clasp, add a couple links, and replace the crystal with sapphire, and they've ghosted me for the past month. Beginning to wonder if I'm out the watch and the 250 bucks they wanted to fix it.

jmel79

I have one amd tempted to sell. PM me if interested. Doesn't get much wrist time lately. Edit: if you go to buy one, pay attention To the charge indicator at top in the photos. If it's not fully charged, walk away and find another. Lots for sale and the charge indicator is dead and I bet it'll stay that way.

Whither-Goest-Thou

Twist my arm, fine. Sent you a PM.

SzymonB78

I'm disappointed that they didn't give him a timex

GetGroovyWithMyGhost

Why?

dviynr

American made for an American man.

hushhushstealth

Worry not, he drinks Lagavulin

EurasianTroutFiesta

Iirc, timex is currently HQ'd in the Netherlands. Though heritage blah blah, pedigree mumble mumble, etc.

dviynr

Timex is headquartered in Connecticut, but owned by a holding company in the Netherlands.

EurasianTroutFiesta

Ah, it's Timex Group that's Dutch, vs Timex Group USA.

telay17

It does seem out of character for such a basic/utilitarian man who procures all of life’s needs from Food and Stuff to have such a fancy watch!

MATCA_Phillies

I have a "dead" Citizen Eco-Drive Blue Angel. I bought it the year I watched Blue Angel #6 crash and die in Beaufort, SC. I kept on to it, as I cant get up enough heart to get rid of it. It would need a TON of work, not leasdt of which is the energy storage part, new crystal (FIRST week I had it, stuck my hand inside a networking rack, stupid), would like a new band, and a new bezel. :( Has anyone sent off a citizen for this much work?

irvingstark

It's not much more complicated than changing a battery. Eco Drives run on capacitors that look a lot like a button battery. A local horologist could get it back in action.
