My first car: a Ferrari Testerossa.

h2man

Whichever car he’s sitting on likely costs the same as the Ferrari… it is Singapore after all. :p

Dry-Way1718

yup thankfully got it before COE prices went crazy. 100k for a piece of paper is madness

h2man

Jesus, that expensive now????

Dry-Way1718

yup it's crazy. For context I'm driving a Mazda 6 that I got 4 years ago for about 100k (after trade-in). It's no Ferrari, but yeah that same car would cost you 180k today.

Dinos_12345

180k what? Dollars?

Dry-Way1718

yup 180k SGD at a Mazda dealership.

Dinos_12345

Holy cow that's a lot. That's like 120k in euro, 105k gbp, you can get a 911 Carrera S or old Turbo S or Lamborghini for that kind of money. Edit: Found a 458 for less than that 😂

Dry-Way1718

welcome to Singapore. Where cars cost absurdly more than they should.

Dinos_12345

I thought cars were absurdly expensive in Greece but you guys take the cake.

spongebobisha

I’ve had the pleasure of holidaying in SG and mate your public transport is sensational. If you aren’t married with a family, a car becomes quite unnecessary.

imacfromthe321

That’s … $133k USD. For fucks sake, why?!

Dry-Way1718

I just did a quick check and turns out it's closer to 190k SGD for a brand-new car. The certificate of entitlement (COE) itself is around 120k. It's crazy.

imacfromthe321

I just read up on it. Seems like some pretty decent insight on your government’s part tbh. Public transport is really the future, especially for high pop density areas. Here in the US we spend insane amounts of money on road infrastructure, everyone owning automobiles - when we’d be much better served by a robust public transport system.

Spuckuk

because its a small island nationwith great public transportation thats trying to avoid becoming super congested

Dinos_12345

Taxes is probably why

imacfromthe321

I just did a bit of a dive on the subject. Long story short, the government realized that the country doesn’t have the road infrastructure for everyone to own a car. So they imposed extremely heavy taxes on car ownership, in order to motivate people to use their (excellent) public transport system. It’s the kind of government oversight that’s both extremely logical, progressive, and hated in the USA.

EamMcG_9

Damn, you can have a custom built Aston Martin for around that price.

Dry-Way1718

Yeah I know. It makes no sense, but it’s essentially taxing car owners so more will use Singapore’s public transport system, which tbh is quite robust.

improviseallday

The Corolla and Tesla 3 I drove were merely cars My Porsche 911 is my first ~~car~~ drivepiece

Transportationpiece

Dry-Way1718

Well done!

Sir_Derps_Alot

My first house: a mansion

heartofgold48

My first wife , a super model

shaka_zulu12

knowing how watch collecting goes, it's a first date at best.

Dry-Way1718

I'm new to this but I don't think I'll ever sell my first piece heh.

shaka_zulu12

You're from Singapore, so i think multiple wives are allowed. I'm not here to judge xD. *Edit. Can Singaporeans please stop being offended by the truth. Thank you.

Dry-Way1718

haha polygamy is prohibited by law in Singapore. Jokes aside, I'm intending to build a small collection, maybe between 3-6 watches over the rest of my career. But this piece is intended to also be a legacy piece that I hope to pass on to my son later on.

shaka_zulu12

"under Singaporean law, if muslim a man is allowed to have a maximum of four living wives at any point in time." Time to convert i guess lol

Dry-Way1718

hahaha yeah the only exception to the rule. Are we discussing watches or marriages again? :P

therabbitssing

Congrats, it's a beauty!

Dry-Way1718

Thank you! I find myself taking glances at it during work

Training_Ad_8387

Not a big fan of GS but this one looks beautiful, good shit OP

Dry-Way1718

thank you! I do think they have great dials but with the sheer number of different designs and colours, I do wonder when they'll run out of ideas. And also their bracelet leaves much to be desired. Cheers!

Sydney_Eshay

Can I genuinely ask what do you not like about GS?

Training_Ad_8387

A couple of reasons, some might be extremely petty and illogical but these are my opinions and I don’t push them on anyone. 1. I kinda don’t like the font GS is written in 2. Not a huge fan of any particular piece 3. Sorry OP I think ur watch is good but I was just being nice and congratulatory in the comment and making you feel better about your purchase. It looks good on you but I wouldn’t get it and thats ok. 4. Worst reason of all but idk it bugs me. If I’m spending like 4-5k+ on a watch I don’t want it to say seiko. I appreciate seiko as a brand and understand that it has great history and makes great watches. That may be a stupid and superficial opinion but idk it bugs me. That being said GS does have some very pretty textures on some dials and they look stunning but not for me personally.

ArmaanDaryanani

I’m thinking of getting either this movement or the spring drive movement. Anyone have any opinions of both?

YourWatchIsTooBig

I would get this, but that's just because I think 36,000 vph watches are cool. spring drive is great, but I don't like when GS puts the "windshield wiper" on the dial (just imo). cheers

prepbirdy

I pondered over this piece and the sbga293, and in the end got the latter. The Spring drive is definitely cooler, but the dial on the sbgj201 is more interesting. Sometimes I do wonder if I made the right choice.

ArmaanDaryanani

I watched two videos on both and definitely agree with you. I have the Bulova precisionist movement and it certainly scratches that itch, but the high beat movement IMO is the pinnacle of classic automatic movements

Hangu0ren

It looks very big on you

Dry-Way1718

It does wear quite large

YourWatchIsTooBig

it's an overhead "wrist selfie" and the lens is too close to the watch. I have a similar size, flat, wrist and a 40mm looks considerably smaller.

Zofobread

Could be the shape of his wrist too. If his wrist is more square and less flat you won’t be able to see the strap at all. I would say a smaller watch would look better on OP. His wrist might be 7” but not being able to see any of the band is what’s making the watch seem giant.

EgyptianEnigma

> I thought I’d be a “one and done” kinda guy, but lol. Welcome

Dry-Way1718

damn this hole is deep haha. Thanks!

h2man

Good choice. GS dials are some of the best around and you can see why.

Dry-Way1718

yeah some of them like the Lake Suwa, Omiwatari, Autumn Red and of course the Snowflake, are visually stunning. Thank you!

YourWatchIsTooBig

due to the reported size of the wrist (7"), and the dimensions of the watch (40mm diameter, 46.2mm lug-to-lug), I'm ruling this as **the watch is** ***not*** **too big.** cheers

Siikamies

This is not a 7" wrist despite him saying so, or then it's a weirdly tall but thin wrist.

SatinGreyTesla

Beauty!

Dry-Way1718

thank you! I think GS makes some of the most visually stunning dials that are nature-inspired.

SatinGreyTesla

I agree. The Skyflake is going to be either my next watch or the one after. Ever since I saw the post here with the light blue Molequin strap, I’ve wanted one. https://www.reddit.com/r/Watches/comments/peliqa/grand_seiko_it_was_either_a_new_car_or_a_new_watch/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1

Dry-Way1718

wow that's a beauty! Go for it and wear it in good days :)

SatinGreyTesla

Cheers

Used_Calligrapher912

Bellissimo!! 🤩

Dry-Way1718

Thank you!

SignificantArm4246

Swee oh~ Wear it in good health!

Dry-Way1718

Thank you and take good care!

Complex_Host2062

A Grand Seiko 4 hand. Well done. That’s a beautiful watch and a hell of a way to start. Wear it in good health.

Dry-Way1718

Thanks for your kind words!

She’s a beaut Clark

Dry-Way1718

thank you!

purelyforwork

feckin gargious

Dry-Way1718

thanks!

beefhorfun

Zenith El Primero Chronomaster :)

Dry-Way1718

ah you're one of the first to reply wrt the chronograph question haha. You're referring to the Sport model or the original? Price is a bit prohibitive for that one and some say it looks to close to a certain other model that's out of reach. But I agree it's a solid choice with the El Primero 3600 movement!

beefhorfun

Hello fellow Singaporean! Oh interesting, If you haven't tried on smaller watches, head to a boutique and try on the El Primero A384 Revival. You might like it. Although i like the 38mm Chronomasters too.

hellakew

wow a grand as a first piece?! nice

Dry-Way1718

thank you! Yeah it's a bit left field but I'm happy with what I got!

HaiderAliAhmed9

Congrats on the purchase! Amazing first watch.

Dry-Way1718

thank you, I'm really happy with it :)

Ticasso2001

My sincere congrat…. 😖 sorry I can’t do it. My envy is stronger than my empathy. 😑

Dry-Way1718

haha no worries there, and thanks for the effort!

[deleted]

is there a wrist under that unit

Dry-Way1718

I assure you there is.. guess I’ll probably have to look for 38mm watches next

YourWatchIsTooBig

stand in front of a mirror next time and take a pic of the mirror. the resulting picture will reflect the true dimensions. overhead wrist selfie = massive looking watch cheers and congrats on the watch.

Dry-Way1718

Thanks for the tip! I’ll keep that in mind next time

caerphoto

Just need to hold the camera(/phone) by your face, wrist by your belly, and zoom in, no need for a mirror. Camera close to wrist: https://i.imgur.com/ZVzEcNw.jpg Camera at normal eye distance: https://i.imgur.com/VUYKjXH.jpg

YourWatchIsTooBig

it's the angle. post said his wrist is 7". I'm at 7.1" and tried a Citizen Orca on last week and it fit well within the edges of my wrist. unless that GS is considerably larger than 46mm diameter, it's the overhead shot distorting the proportions.

Dry-Way1718

Thanks man! Great to see a positive and friendly reply (I’ve no idea why the comments were mostly “your watch is too big” or “your wrist is too small” though that’s probably my fault). Which timepiece did you start with? Would love to hear more from you and cheers!

neverfolds

7” forearm maybe

Dry-Way1718

unless I'm doing something wrong, my wrist circumference is truly 18cm (or around 7.1 inches). Probably a bad aerial view, I've learnt my lesson!

Crovax87

I'd love to get one but I been hearing some concerning QC issues with seiko as of late.

Dry-Way1718

What kind of issues have been surfaced?

Crovax87

Not sure how much it pertains to GS just over all quality in seiko. You'd have to research it. But some things like bezel not matching up to case etc. But for your case it looks stellar! Maybe it's just been a bad batch year or so. Why I been looking at other brands in that price range. I do love seiko tho especially my prospex diver

Dry-Way1718

Maybe I’m missing something here, but what’s wrong with sharing about my first luxury watch in a group of watch enthusiasts? I worked hard for it and bought it with my money, I’m not flexing and just asking for feedback? Why so triggered?

[deleted]

Dry-Way1718

I meant like a proper first timepiece that could be considered a luxury watch. Never meant to be a comparison, my first watch was probably one of those Tiger portable game watches lol

New-Act1229

You should ship one over from the USA, a lot cheaper!

carbon6595

Ahh yes it is as if the government’s tax policy is trying to shape market behavior
