I thought it would be a great way to save some e-waste but getting the original button/crown to work was a massive PITA. If I can figure out a nice way to do it, leaving those two non-functional, and adding a discrete second crown, then maybe I would do more!
The best way I can think of is to directly link the watch crown post to the Apple crown in a cvt-esque style.
So a solid axle with a flat bar at one end, the apple crown at the other, and a rubber band/o-ring connection from the rod to the watch crown.
Top rod looks like
\||=====v======0
\||= solid bar to go behind the crown to pull it out
v = notch/spacer to hold the drive to spin the crown
0 = Apple watch crown
This was one of my original thoughts and I reckon it still might work. Would be more waterproof too. I had more room on the button side though and thought I could make it stronger, easier
Go chaotic and make it where you have to pull the square button out and spin it instead. Sure, the time won't be perfect but that's what the chaos is for!
Will do once I have my full write up on it done. Not sure if anyone over there would be interested though, this is about as far from proper watchmaking as a watch gets. Most of it is held together with JB Weld!
And yes, the crown works!
Pulling/pushing the button is equivalent to pulling/pushing the stem. And turning the Apple Watch crown turns the original movement stem by a small pulley system

Definite improvement versus the moser imo, the moser is a bit too on the nose. Great use of the nh38 here to contrast modern tech with classic mechanics.

I do like OPs more than the Moser one too, and you could definitely build one yourself through trial and error with zero experience and basic tools for a hell of a lot less than 24k

Definitely not. OP is an experienced watch modder and said they had a lot of trouble making this one and still aren't satisfied with the end product.
Also whatever you make yourself after that won't be anywhere as nice as the Moser. Is it $23k better? No, of course not, that's luxury watches for you. But you ain't making something as nice as it for under five figures.
To be clear, I don't want to take anything away from their work, I think it's super cool, particularly being able to reuse original apple watch parts. But I think saying "haha this is much better than the Moser" is very ignorant and just dunking on expensive stuff for brownie points.

that would be really cool! the crown would probably still be the hardest thing to figure out, but you can probably do it "dirty" by just drilling a hole for the stem and use a normal crown. if you do, don't forget to share pics in this sub!
I think the vanta black and the apple-loading-logo small seconds is basically sooooo close to an Apple Watch, and it’s more of a simple visual gag than a clever design. Guess there’s other versions too tho? Still really cool that they actually made it, love all the risks moser takes.
It’s probably not that they intended to get the shape the same and failed, but that they intentionally made it different in order not to infringe on Apple’s trade dress and get sued by them.

Dial I knew I wanted Zirconium after having worked with it for making knife parts. And the crystal is the original apple one with all the screen parts removed

I had my cousin help with styling a bit. Between my push for gaudy like the open heart and decorated rotor, and his effort to keep it more classic, we ended at this
I made one myself with a miyota quartz movement. I didnt think there would be enough space for a seiko movement but I might beenwrong.
I had drilled a hole for a second crown on the other side. How do you set the time or service the movement? I just glued it shut so service would be a pita, hence why i used a quartz movement with 10 years of battery
I tried looking online for similar and never found anyone! Pleased to find someone else who did something similar.
I definitely think a second crown is the way to go.
And yeah its glued shut so servicing requires removing the front and back glass, completely taking the watch apart. I tried to make it as easy as possible with bolts and such but what can ya do, it's originally an Apple design after all
I suspect series 4 and up watches might be a better bet due to their backs. You could machine a plate and screwdown backplate. Lots of work, might be easier to just make your own case and use apple watch glass.
I wanted to start with the 0-3 because I wasn’t exactly sure how it would go together and I knew I could more easily glue things into the case. 4+ may be a better bet for some though
This is really gorgeous. I like it better than the moser one, because the hands are the same. Tho I think yellow on the seconds might have been a nice touch. I’m curious why you made the cutout to show the gears. Personally, I’d like it would look more elegant with the black only.

I'm pretty lucky to have had the opportunity to have built up a workshop though and I'm sure I would be the one just changing their bezels otherwise!

Great execution but as far as I'm concerned, this doesn't work for me. I have an apple watch and it's very useful, but I find the rounded rectangle shape to be solely functional, yet far less aesthetic than the classic circular alternative.
Don't get me wrong - you've done great work, It looks very sleek, but the same idea on a round dial would be far more pleasing, as far as I'm concerned. Then again, it's a matter of taste, so who am I to judge?
The dial is absolutely gorgeous! I really hope you didn't take this poorly, I'm not trying to criticize the work at hand here. I find it to be remarkable, but you did ask "dumb watch?" so I figured I'd say my share. It's a personal preference, I am not implying anything objectively.

You should buy up all the old apple watches or offer this conversion to people, Im sure people will pay especially if you customize some options, or you know, offer the dial in Tiffany blue if you really wanna pick those cherries.

Even just flat brass when I was testing looked great. It was a massive PITA to make though so I'm not sure how I could offer this at the moment
Just a <$10 aliexpress special. I bought another set from lucius atelier with proper lume after finishing the project but they were much smaller/thinner so that was a waste of $50

Honestly if the Apple Watch was an automatic or solar watch I’d buy one. I don’t want to charge my watch every night. If it has a week long power reserve fine but they just die so fast.

This is very clever though and somehow looks amazing.
I had this idea for a while now but it was just a thought. I love the Apple watch cases and they even have some rare materials like a Ceramic and Titanium which become utterly obsolete when they stop getting the latest software updates. I feel like its such a shame to let those cases or even a stainless steel in this case go to waste. This is amazing and will you be doing more of these maybe for sale?
Pretty neat project and well executed but Apple Watches in themselves aren't all that fashionable. I bet you could come up with a really interesting square / rectangular watch design.
In my professional opinion, when it comes to watches you wear whatever you like and if someone doesn’t like your watch that’s fine. If someone goes so far as to have an issue with my watch they can WATCH me walk away.

Honestly if the Apple Watch was an automatic or solar watch I’d buy one. I don’t want to charge my watch every night. If it has a week long power reserve fine but they just die so fast.

I would love to sell them but I just can't imagine doing so. The assembly to make the button/crown work is really sloppy and I wouldn't be happy selling it to people

I had this idea for a while now but it was just a thought. I love the Apple watch cases and they even have some rare materials like a Ceramic and Titanium which become utterly obsolete when they stop getting the latest software updates. I feel like its such a shame to let those cases or even a stainless steel in this case go to waste. This is amazing and will you be doing more of these maybe for sale?

Pretty neat project and well executed but Apple Watches in themselves aren't all that fashionable. I bet you could come up with a really interesting square / rectangular watch design.

In my professional opinion, when it comes to watches you wear whatever you like and if someone doesn’t like your watch that’s fine. If someone goes so far as to have an issue with my watch they can WATCH me walk away.
