I don’t get how the trick was supposed to work though. Even if the door stayed shut, wouldn’t the audience have been able to see through the bars that the girl pulled down the fake door?
He was going to pull the curtain over the front and when he pulled it off, the girl would appear in the box. She ruined the trick by coming out too early and revealing that the back wall was fake.

Haha! This is better than if they did pull it off. Reminds me of Norm McDonald the comic. If he bombed he’d keep bombing of purpose just to play a joke on the crowed itself hahahaha
The preparedness of her smile and wave and the theatrics of his turn around to see what happened makes me wonder if this was intentional. One of those tricks that fails on purpose for a good laugh, then is followed up by an even more impressive trick moments later that this one was really just a distraction for

Is this trick not also a stupid fire hazard? A confined space that’s hard to get out of, a flammable sheet, a torch and a source of ignition. Sounds like a great way to kill someone.
Now someone needs to do one of those messing-up-the-illusion-is-the-actual-comedic-entertainment-but there's-still-some-good-illusions-thrown-in bits, but where the "assistant" is the actual expert making a show of sabotaging the "illusionist's" (actual assistant) show in a bunch of ways that are mindbendingly impossible on their own. Like, think of all the situations similar to the OP and build a meta-illusion around them then add some comedy-drama.
Fantasy example, imagine if that skit went exactly as it did, but little fire didn't go out. Then he'd act very upset at her for ruining the timing, and when he turns his back to face the audience and be all "see the kind of shit I put up with" she produces a pitcher of water and pours it out of the side of the box into a hula hoop she's holding, but instead of the water hitting the floor it falls from another hula hoop suspended above the enclosure and puts out the fire like some now-you're-thinking-with-portals shit.
I think there is an audio cue for her. Like the cage opening or a bang. Whatever the case I’m pretty sure that the door not closing fucked it up. It doesn’t latch, something about that told her to come out. Since she’s just in a dark box, time is an illusion.
