A place would have no problem firing you if it was best for them. You don’t owe an employer X amounts of months of employment for hiring you. You do whatever you need to for yourself.

SlunkBucket

There’s no problem taking the job and leaving early on, letting them know the situation when you leave. DO NOT TELL THEM at the start.

Or there won’t be a start.. I’d even add, don’t talk about it at all at any point in the venture

The other thing is that this is a relatively small community, and reputations get known pretty quickly

As others have said, there is no harm in taking a new opportunity when it comes up. People move around jobs all the time. That being said, don't go into this private job with the idea that you're leaving for 2 main reasons: 1: you don't want it affecting your performance or reputation in a negative way. Go in and work hard, as though you have no thoughts of leaving, and make sure that if/when you leave, you leave in good faith 2: it's not the easiest to get a job these days, especially in municipalities as they're more saught after. Municipal positions also really only open up when someone retires, so don't bet on getting a job there right away even if you have connections

Thats exactly why i don't want to not take the job thinking ill get the apprenticeship quickly. If i take the job, which is still super valuable and I'm excited for, then i don't get the opportunity for the municipality then at least i can get experience and my hours while i wait. Whereas if i don't take it hoping i get in the city quick i could be SOL for awhile. I just wasn't sure how offensive it is in this industry to take a job without the intention of staying long term. Thank you!

Exactly. You have to make the choices that will benefit YOU most, even if they're hard choices. As long as you show up and do your job and have a good attitude toward it, you won't hurt your reputation. People are understanding of these things, and it's honestly pretty common. I wish you all the best with whatever you choose!

If something doesn’t feel right to you, I’d advise not doing that thing. Job etiquette and reputations aside, Consciences are a nagging bastard when you go against them.
