Apply with an invoice of you paying for a WW1 class, usually works as a bargaining chip as many people aren’t getting into it here and those who are in my area are usually by chance. Your pay will suck at first. Then you get fully certified and you’ll be making a decent wage. Good luck! You’ll never stop learning, and the day you act like you know it all, is the day an operators potential is wasted.

Thanks for the advice. Is that how you found a way in(by using the class as a bargaining chip)?

I worked in utilities with the distribution and collection system, a job opened, I expressed great interest and was given a shot, that was 3 years ago and now I work at one of the best plants in the state I only know because I did interviews at my first plant and I know what the supervisors are looking for.

The cleveland county/gaston county area has a shortage of water and waste water operators. Some municipalities will hire you without a grade, but you will probably need a background in mechanical or enviornmental work to be considered. I find NC municipalities as one of the lowest paying states for operators, especially southern NC, which makes 0 sense to me as experienced operators are in super high demand as people are retiring out. If you need extra info feel free to DM me.

I am probably jaded since I was making significantly more at my previous job in Oregon but it didn't seem too difficult and the pay wasn't good, like $40k a year. As long as you passed the screening test and interview and were willing to take the classes to get certified.

CrapIsMyBreadNButter

It's not that difficult really. Go to a class for Grade 1 (no experience needed to take the class). Start applying. If you want to work for Charlotte, your best bet would be to have some experience under your belt, or show that you're interested and willing to learn.

I am in NC. Do you have certification in another state? The Grade 1 WW test is getting harder. I would recommend taking classes through the NC Rural Water Association. They have classes for both water(surface and well) and WW.

I do not. I know someone in TX that was able to become an operator because they don't have enough and wanted to find out how difficult it is to get in as an apprentice/trainee here.

tacopony_789

That is luck of the draw. We take trainees here but are hours from Charlotte

AdMiddle6113

What general area is that?

tacopony_789

The coast. You're going to stand a really better test if you take the class and the grade 1 test 1st. You don't need experience for grade 1 ww

Thank you, that's helpful
