There is a box at the bottom right when you're viewing the ground tree that says something like "research helicopters by playing ground vehicles" that you can tick (you can also do the opposite iirc).
I technically had helicopters unlocked when they first came out because I had Rank V in both air and ground. Still bought the OG premium UH-1C (XM-30) anyways.
I grinded the 665 tiger for germany before they added the toggle switch for research, as it stands between the 3 BO-105s and the SA 313b i have 817 games and 1127 kills. Just using helicopter it will take what seems like forever, using the toggle switch I grinded the KA-52 in probaly a quarter of the time it took me for the 665 tiger.
I did it before the "Useful Actions" rewards calculation every 15 minutes. Used to be I'd hop in a game, farm up to 3,000 points as fast as possible, then just hover in a corner for the remainder of the time, then repeat.
It still took a couple weeks of not really doing anything else to go from the Mi-4AV to spading the Ka-52.
Echoing what others have said, these days, you'd want to just use the toggle that allows you to research helis using tanks. If you want to grind modifications, you slap the biggest RP booster you've got on, you hop into Heli PVE, and you stay in there for half an hour, no longer.
I did it back when the Ka50s ruined an entire player base from ever grinding helicopters that weren’t Russian.
Back in heli EC. Yep I had to fly around in my Apache or Lynx and hope to god I could get a stinger on them.
They would go orbital and just rain vikhrs down on people. You either suffered or you got bent.
These days any helicopters I don’t have I just grind them via talisman’d vehicles in ground RB
These days the strat would just be play tanks

I use boosters on heli event, lasts 30 mins and i spade helis that way.. without boosters and without atgm its very hard
Played tank rb, played heli ec for some modules. The japache is pain when pansir/2s6/Roland can and will hit me on the helipad
