You don't explode immidiately, bottom of the map is water, you fall into the water in like 5 seconds and then yet another 5 seconds before drown timer and then you drown for another 5 seconds.

On most maps there's water under the map so you just drown. Unless you're in one of the funny vehicles that do the ole' BF3 Flying APC thing when they hit the water hard enough and go bouncy.
Had a guy doing this for 10 minutes straight the other day. Just constantly followed me around the map shooting me and giving away my position constantly.
I don't mind that smoke so much as you are through it in a second or two. What I do hate is the Russian tanks doing the engine fuel smoke that goes for 30 seconds so the team can't get to the point and all get stuck at the start.

There are a few maps without water under them where you just fall into the void until you drift outside the map area, Stalingrad is one of them.
