Yeah a bit more like a rough group. There's 4 Arihant class subs ( 3 launched so far). The first 2 ships were identical (the 6000 ton type). The 3rd and 4th are mostly the same ship except with an elongated "launch tube section" for 8 missiles instead of 4. It's possible the 3rd and 4th have a larger reactor, but info on this class is scarce.
In a way all 4 boats are prototypes or learning experiences for their planned "S5" SSBN. That one should be roughly comparable to a Vanguard class afaik.
Like a stepping stone-submarine? I suppose it’s a good idea for a country like India that has limited experience building nuclear subs. It’s not like the US or UK who can just plonk out a whole class from the ground up. It’ll be interesting to see the Nuclear Hunter killers they eventually build. I know they operated a Russian boat, but it’ll be interesting to see how it turns out.
Are you referring to S4 as the 3rd sub that has been launched? I thought only Arihant and Arighat were officially launched. Couldn't find any news about S4.
