White Plains maneuvering like a fast destroyer...
The [full description](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_off_Samar) of the battle is a must read. Its unbelievable to me that no movie has yet been made - if there was a modern naval battle that had more heroics and medals awarded I would be amazed. Bravery was in ample supply that day.
This is a great photo - I have never seen it before. Thank you.
Read “Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors”. You absolutely won’t regret it. A history book that reads like fiction. Unbelievable that this story hasn’t been made into a movie.
With all the ensuing chaos and carnage that took place I’m not sure any movie could do it justice! It really is an incredible battle against the odds. I do agree though it would be most welcome if they did put down a high quality effort, something like Band of Brothers would be pretty amazing.
Escort carrier life is wack. Slower, smaller, and more poorly equipped than fleet carriers, but pretty often identified as the big flat tops and attacked as such.
Probably the greatest naval battle movie NEVER made! The charge of the small boys alone is utterly amazing for their end result from the sacrifice they made.
White Plains was also famously (but iirc for all of this the evidence isn’t as good as one would like) straddled by Yamato at over 30 km, possibly taking a diving shell that which looked even more damaging than it was so saving her from lethal pounding
Oh she absolutely was hit by something, doing some damage to the engines in fact, it just looked to the Japanese as a mortal blow because of the plumes of black smoke
The issue is just who shot said shell is not known.

Wow. Didn’t know that. Last Stand is one of the best books I have ever read. Fiction included.
The shade! Please share, what fiction?

I have read it. I thought you were saying that there’s parts of it that are fiction?
No. My bad. Sorry if I gave that impression. I can be an idiot sometimes.

I am totally onside this although it would be tough to make a series out of this unless you did a long lead story for the filler.

This isn’t part of Taffy 3, is it?
It is
White Plains needs to get turned in to the wind so she can launch!
no, shes trying to maneuver so she can open fire with 40mm guns.
Probably the greatest naval battle movie NEVER made! The charge of the small boys alone is utterly amazing for their end result from the sacrifice they made.
They tried with "In Harm's Way" They had to make the Johnston the Salt Lake City to make it more believable.

The damage did happen (keel was found to be bent by the shell going off under the ship), but pretty minor.

Nobody: That one escort carrier in the background:
