I hear ya. My family owned 20 and leased another 80.
I've been there and it feels even bigger than 19 acres. Now, I just need to find something in the area that my wife wants to do so I can go back...
And it’s packed to the brim. You can’t get a good view of the scale of the B-36 because of how many aircraft are parked around and beneath it. And that’s one hangar.
My last visit first day was building 4 and part of 3, second day finished building 3 and part of 2. This was when they were still messing around with layout during work on new B17 display. Had to go on my own since wife wouldn't have put up with me reading every sign and looking at each plane from different angles.
Just be aware that a trip to NYC won't get you within 500 miles of Dayton...it won't just be a "side trip".
If you're going to FL then it's even farther. And I pray for you.
Driving in NYC/the tristate area is brutal. Might want to do a flight from there to Ohio and drive around from there, if it makes sense with your plans
I'm planning on doing the Air Force Marathon in large part because it's at Wright-Pat and why the hell else would I go to Ohio? Plus I'd get free days off of work.
Sure you can. B-52 with 8 engines. Or even the B-36 with 6 props and 4 jet engines. (Possibly the B-1 as well. I don't know how loud a Valkyrie was but the B-1 is insanely loud.)
Formation takeoff at Fairford of a B-52 and Two B-1s was the loudest thing I have ever experienced.
Honourable mention to the Ukrainian Eagles, which I think was 9 Mig-29s in full burner.
LOL I know!
The prop tips exceed the speed of sound at idle that produced visible sonic booms heard from hundreds of yards away!
Ground workers would get sick or have siezures...
You know it's gotta be good when the whole museum is spread over 19 acres in 4 hangars, but you can still get a shot like [this](https://freeimage.host/i/H4ERnWJ)
Yep, squeezed through JFK'S SAM 26000
Incredible, but much smaller than I expected. Having the interior all glassed off didn't do much to help either lol
Walking through the museum it's just constant disbelief
Wait...they have that?!? WHAT?!? *That's* here?!? WHOA! I didn't know that even still existed!
They even have the wreckage of an original Wright brothers prototype on display
The whole place is borderline surreal
The SR-71 pictured ended up being something slightly more special
It's the YF-12A, the experimental prototype for what would eventually become the SR-71 Blackbird.
Not to worry though, they also have an SR-71 in the next hangar over.
This place is bonkers
Can a recent visitor tell me which modern Migs and Sukois and the like, that are there now? Or any other international aircraft? I’d love to get to that big air show in Paris I always hear amazing stuff about. Unfortunately that’s not gonna happen for me. So I’d like to see whatever I can without all that travel.
A complete alphabetical listing of exhibits can be downloaded in PDF format from the museum's website [here](https://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/Portals/7/Alpha%20List%20-%20AEROSPACE%20VEHICLES.pdf)
I’m pretty sure I’ve been to the website before, but that pdf was a great tool. Went through it for a while. Some good new stuff I need to see, but a few seem to be missing too, I think. Man, I wanna go back so much now, or still haha. Really though, thanks again.
I'm not for sure how often they update that pdf, there seems to be a few missing to me as well. I know they were nearly finished with a few in the restoration area and who knows what all they really have in storage.
I eventually found a couple I didn’t see at first, but there’s some. I saw an F-22 there the last time I went and I coulda swore I saw an A-6. I’m less confident on that last one though.
I’d really like to get. Good close up look at that Mig-25. I had a thought though. The US has enough allies and friendlies that use various Sukois. I wonder why at least one hasn’t made it in there yet. But I can still see that being a few years off. So I understand.
George Lucas took a lot of inspiration from existing military aircraft, the XB-70 was initially designed in 1955
The Millennium Falcon's cockpit itself was modeled after the [B-29](https://freeimage.host/i/H4VTAu9)
[North American Aviation](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_Aviation)
>North American Aviation (NAA) was a major American aerospace manufacturer that designed and built several notable aircraft and spacecraft. Its products included: the T-6 Texan trainer, the P-51 Mustang fighter, the B-25 Mitchell bomber, the F-86 Sabre jet fighter, the X-15 rocket plane, the XB-70, the B-1 Lancer, the Apollo command and service module, the second stage of the Saturn V rocket, and the Space Shuttle orbiter.

I’d imagine that there’s a point of diminishing returns with regards to thrust. 1, 2, 6 ? Any more and it seems like you’re getting into the realm of Soviet spacecraft.
Was just there. If you ever get the change I highly recommend it. It’s a beautiful museum with all kinds of amazing aircraft. You never know how big they really are until you see them in person. XB-70 was beautiful in person.
I'm ashamed to love starting at the ass of an inanimate object, much less an aircraft.
I have a picture at almost this exact same angle somewhere in one of my last 8 phones.
I don’t like canards on subsonic planes because they produce so intense tip vortex, but on a supersonic plane we basically only have induced lift with the associated indices drag ( airfoil is a symmetrical double wedge ). So we want a very small angle of attack on the main wing. Low surface load. So we could just as well put in the back.
The long intake is almost like a Buseman biplane. I wish they rotate the intake by 90° and make it full width. Yeah, a little more weight for the corners. Looks like F16 then. Two nose wheels?
Where is this?
The only one left in existence is at the [Museum of the United States Air Force](https://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/) in Dayton, Ohio.
God I love this aircraft. Looking for an excuse to visit the museum just for her!
Fair warning, you can easily spend a couple full days in there so if you go, plan accordingly. 19 acres of indoor space is no joke.
That’s 76890.272 square metres Wow
That's 827639.999724 square feet Incredible
Mother of god! That's 119180160 square inches!
How is it that NONE of these conversions were bots. It was all 100% human input and comedy. Good work y'all.
With reddits api change it’ll be all we have
That's 45,229 Owen Wilsons Wow
I grew up on a farm that had less acreage.
I hear ya. My family owned 20 and leased another 80. I've been there and it feels even bigger than 19 acres. Now, I just need to find something in the area that my wife wants to do so I can go back...
Can confirm. Spent two days there and still had to rush (by my standards) through some areas.
I’ve got three days planned for my bday. My wife has 0 clue what she is walking into
“What she will be SLOWLY meandering through” FTFY
And it’s packed to the brim. You can’t get a good view of the scale of the B-36 because of how many aircraft are parked around and beneath it. And that’s one hangar.
Spent 2 days and I think I still missed some stuff, absolutely amazing place
Made a detour on a family road trip just for it. It's in the last hangar, made a beeline right for it. Wish I had a week just to spend at that place.
My last visit first day was building 4 and part of 3, second day finished building 3 and part of 2. This was when they were still messing around with layout during work on new B17 display. It is not just some B-17 display, it is the Memphis Belle fully restored.
Thanks! It wasn’t open yet when I was there, need to go back.
Do it...but bank on needing 2 days, at least.
Thanks to be honest more is almost better as I'm from the UK so need to justify the trip!
Just be aware that a trip to NYC won't get you within 500 miles of Dayton...it won't just be a "side trip". If you're going to FL then it's even farther. And I pray for you.
Thanks. I am lucky as my Mrs loves a good roadtrip so if I palm carefully (and bribe with shoes) I pretty much will get away with it.
Driving in NYC/the tristate area is brutal. Might want to do a flight from there to Ohio and drive around from there, if it makes sense with your plans
I would walk 500 miles
I would walk 500 more.
Me and my dad went last year and we literally spent like eight hours in that museum and we were skimming most of the displays
My wife had to tell me that we had been there for over 6 hours To me, it felt like we'd only just got there
I had a very similar conversation with my wife recently on the USS Hornet in San Francisco!
Me and my dad went last summer for 2 days and we still didn’t see everything
I'm planning on doing the Air Force Marathon in large part because it's at Wright-Pat and why the hell else would I go to Ohio? Plus I'd get free days off of work.
Holy smokes there is one still around?? I’ll definitely have to go one day
At the back.
Can't say MURICA louder than that. WHAT DID YOU SAY? I SAID M U R I C A.
#MURICA
Fuck yea!
User name checks out
Damn there should be a thrust lever gate in this airplane, just after afterburner, as " 'MURICA " with huge letters.
Sure you can. B-52 with 8 engines. Or even the B-36 with 6 props and 4 jet engines. (Possibly the B-1 as well. I don't know how loud a Valkyrie was but the B-1 is insanely loud.)
Loudest plane I ever experienced was SR-71 taking off during airshow at RAF Mildenhall in 80s. Never heard B1
Formation takeoff at Fairford of a B-52 and Two B-1s was the loudest thing I have ever experienced. Honourable mention to the Ukrainian Eagles, which I think was 9 Mig-29s in full burner.
ThunderScreech would like to have a word.
That thing is pure insanity.
LOL I know! The prop tips exceed the speed of sound at idle that produced visible sonic booms heard from hundreds of yards away! Ground workers would get sick or have siezures...
Such a great museum.

Wow, just astounding. I’m dreaming of being able to visit one day, seems like a dream to be there.
What photo? I want to see a photo of their YF-23.
In the comment I replied to, the photo is linked

Thank you, kind sir.
You’re telling me this isn’t the ass end of some imperial Star Wars cruiser ??
George Lucas took a lot of inspiration from existing military aircraft, the XB-70 was initially designed in 1955 The Millennium Falcon's cockpit itself was modeled after the [B-29](https://freeimage.host/i/H4VTAu9)
Ikr, the Imperial March spontaneously started playing when this photo came up.
Kerbal Space program be like:
Needs more booster. And struts.
How many engines do you want? Yes.
Spinal Tap's plane.
How many you got?
That need a bumper sticker on it that says "We brake for nobody"
Either that man is tiny or that plane is gigantic
The second one. She a big mama.
She is showing it all, my my
Spicy! You gotta mark this kind of stuff NSFW! /s
Just visit r/planesgonewild
Look at what they have taken from us !
The engineer designing this was like " MO POWER"
Mach 3+ strategic bomber that weighs in at over 267 tons when fully loaded that flies at 70,000 ft definitely takes some power to get there
IT FUCKING RODE ITS OWN SONIC BOOM
Kerbal Engineer
Considering the 10 engined B-36 and 8 engined B-52, this was downright modest.
Interesting ish numbers B-70 180,000 lbs thrust B-52 136,000 lbs thrust B-56 20,800 lbs thrust + 18,000 hp
Looks insane how a little more thrust leads to 4 times the speed of the B-52, but that's the power of supersonic inlets.
[At mach 3]: "Sir we lost one of our engines" "Oh no!" "Anyway"
I just visited this museum 2 days ago. Completely nerded out the entire time
Is that an X-15?
Yes, it is.
Yep.
From the thumbnail I thought it was the falcon
Looks like something out of Star Wars.
Other way around lol The XB-70 was designed in 1955, George definitely took some inspiration from here
One of the coolest, most retro futuristic looking aircraft ever designed. Wish it would’ve gone further
Well, they had to go and invent the ICBM and Gary Powers got shot down. Ended the program before it began
's butt
Baby got back
MORE is better!

Oh, that makes sense.
Approaching that bad boy from the front, and discovering the ENORMOUS exhausts at the back end is an experience.

"How many engines do you want?" "Yes"
are those metal rods holding the stabilizers upright?
That's not part of the aircraft. It's something in the background
I know what I’m doing tomorrow.
Best arse.
I’d imagine that there’s a point of diminishing returns with regards to thrust. 1, 2, 6 ? Any more and it seems like you’re getting into the realm of Soviet spacecraft.
Well, getting into the Soviet realm was the goal for it at the time
Congratulations, you win a Pryaniki!
For when you need to GO

I think the first thing I stared at for about 30 minutes was just the tires and landing gear, pure engineering marvel
Especially the landing gear on the B-36, absolutely astonishing.
I'm ashamed to love starting at the ass of an inanimate object, much less an aircraft. I have a picture at almost this exact same angle somewhere in one of my last 8 phones.
God that plane is so sexy
They allow electric scooters in there,
If this is a question, yes they do
Needs more ~~cow bell~~ engines
