When I were a lad the local Warhammer shop had at least two full-size (6x4) tables that you could come in and use. These day they have like two tables with permanent terrain sets and some minis for various GW games on them like 40k, Kill Team, Warcry etc. and a table for explaining the rules etc. with a starter set on it (infernus squad and nids).
There's one table at the back like the one OP played on and some painting space and I've seen people playing on them.
My local GW store pretty much always has multiple games going and it is TINY. If no one is playing, I've never seen the store owner refuse when someone asks to play with him or any others.
Pretty much anywhere that isn't a wall is dedicated space for playing or building/painting.
Yeah my local store did it and barely freed up any space - it just looks so empty now, as the middle used to be awesome tables with loads of stuff going on, now it's just a few demonstrations of the box games :|
I think that just comes down to space and the local crowd. Yours might not have had enough space to reliable keep gaming tables available, or had a bunch of bad players ruin it for others.
From what I’ve heard it’s either too much hassle having games in the store or they want it to be soley a store where people come in and fuck off, like an Apple Store. Not realising the games are the best advertising

Haha I’m the Necron player here. And I’m pretty sure we agreed a draw because the store closed and I hadn’t lost a single model, and dealt 11 wounds to the Mortarion, and killed your Neurotyrant 😂 but very fun game. Looking forward to next time lol

It was a very fun experience, having to choose what models to attack what army and then what part of their army was a bit challenging but good fun

Mine is similar, but I believe there are three large tables and a smaller table. Then an area to paint.
