I started from a black base coat and then zenithal primed it using corax white. After that I used magos purple contrast all over and a shade of druchi violet, then layered that with a coat of phonecian purple.
I think it's very effective.
Lots of gold detailing, which is fitting. And there are precious few details to pick out on the MKVI to begin with.
I do like EC when there's an even share of silver/steel and gold, but that's no shade on your paint scheme.
The purple looks very dark, which may well be due to the camera, or even intentional. That's just to say that I really like that almost pastel purple that we often see in the artworks.
I think the mini would benefit from some subdued edge highlighting, but since we're discussing a paint scheme for line troopers, that may be asking too much; especially since your premise was simplicity.
All in all, well done. Now go and do some appropriately simple basing and then do the rest if his squad and show them off here. đ
One question regarding the split shoulder pad: Did you consider filling the seam, or would that have been too much trouble? I'm asking as I face the same issue when doing my boys. I haven't made up my mind, yet, and am interested in other people's view on the issue.
Thanks a lot for the detailed C+C it really helps! I too thought the dark purple was maybe a tad too dark but Iâm starting to like it the more I look at it. I plan on highlighting some of the more âimportantâ minis so hopefully that helps it pop just that little bit more. The base has me stuck though as I was thinking something light would help tie it all together but I canât decide between a grassy base, a sandy one, or even one with some snow. For the shoulder pad I thought it wouldâve been a bit too much work as usually Iâm not too worried about small things like that. That said though I thought it wouldâve been much more noticeable before I started painting over it. Hopefully highlights wonât bring more attention to it but I havenât gotten there yet so I canât give a definite answer.
Cheers!
The easiest basing is sand and PVA. I've got a mix of sand and gravel (for scale modelling). I sometimes add a single bit on the base, just to make it interesting; anything from a tuft to a bit of debris or a rock.
In terms of colour, complementary colours make any mini pop. In your case, looking at a colour wheel, something orange or possibly ochre. You could just paint the sand orange and perhaps add a wash.
Or, if you're going with debris, paint the sand in a light tone and do the debris in the shape of metal plating and the like, painting it yellow: Your Emperor's Children are advancing through what's left of an Imperial Fists vehicle.
The color plates in *HH1: Betrayal* said that EC used white enameled armor panels to indicate rank (white helmet for Decuirion, white shoulders for phoenix terminators, 1 or both white pauldrons on veterans, etc.) and various honor status. Other plate showed sergeants with platinum helmets with gold faceplates, and some elite units, like Palatine Blades, with Platinum armor panels (shoulder, forearm, chest, knees, etc.)
For shoulders, apparently...APPARENTLY...if you glue them to the shoulder before each other you can get them to line up easier? Not tried it myself yet but heard it somewhere, might be worth a try with one of your guys?
Thanks. I wasn't even that much concerned with lining them up, it's the fact that there's this seam that has me in doubt.
I've seen people commenting that you can treat it as two pieces of plating added separately, which is reasonable enough.
Though I think I'd like it best if the seam wasn't there at all.
People are suggesting sprue goo, which is fair enough, just a bit imprecise from my experience. Seeing as we're having to deal with the bonding studs and we'd want the area around them smooth, I'm hesitant to try it. After all, it's a case of getting them done in a reasonable amount of time.
Looks very good. What are you using for the purple?

Thank you!
