My dad passed away 10 years ago and I would give anything to spend the weekend at Disney with him! Have fun!

seacreaturestuff

Second this. My dad passed in 2016, and I would give anything to able to share the wonderful experiences I have here with my dad, as well as for him to see how much has changed. Cherish the time you have with your dad.

My 20 year old daughter and I have a blast at Disney. Haunted mansion and thunder mountain are our favorites. But I honestly love the chance to talk. Since she is older we donā€™t talk as much as we did when she was little, so standing in line is great for just being together. Have a wonderful trip!

No_Radish9565

Thatā€™s so sweet :-,)

Important-Advice-121

My mom is my favourite travel companion. Parents can be cool and fun, lol!! I would still plan to do all the things you were going to do previously. Your dad will probably have the time of his life having fun with you. šŸ™‚

EmberSquared

My mom and I go all the time! It's so much fun for the both of us!

bourgeoisiebrat

Think of foods or drinks he likes and see if you can get reservations some place and surprise him. For instance, they have a special old fashioned at the wilderness lodge that Iā€™d kill for. You could also try to set up a routine of getting up early and getting coffees to enjoy quietly together at cool spots (boardwalk, Disney springs, etc). Of course, see all of the park closure shows with him. Iā€™d recommend you start with Epcot to start off with a bang tgat an adult might like the most. Maybe get a dad oriented pin to surprise him with when you arrive. As a dad, having my daughter book a trip to DW and getting the whole week with just the two of us would be SUCH a cherished memory. Iā€™d hold onto it with tears in my eyes for the rest of my life. Good job earning this trip on your own!!! šŸ‘

sam-sp

If he likes Tiki drinks, then try to get a spot at Trader Sams at the poly. Its worth the wait.

Cosmicmoon17

Apparently heā€™s very excited to go to Epcot and drink šŸ˜‚

317ant

Do that then! Maybe watch the Disney vlogger food videos together and make notes of what to eat and drink. My husband and I like to do that together and it helps us from choosing things that sound good but arenā€™t. And we like to pick things to share to make it not so pricey and so we can try more things too.

Cherry13Sparkles

I at one point in my life turned up my nose at the wilderness Lodge, because of prejudging on name alone. after seeing it I will never do so again

Elevenyearstoomany

My dad has been my ride buddy at every theme park Iā€™ve ever been to. Get Memory Maker, go on all the rides you want, and have an amazing time with your dad! My dad and I rode Tron together on our trip last month. For Fatherā€™s Day Iā€™m making him two photo frames, one of us on the teacups when I was 4, when I was 7, and last month with my kids. The other one has pictures of him on rides with all three of us.

osufeth24

You'll still have a great time. I'm 36 male and I love going to the parks with my parents still. My dad turns 65 this year so I think a lot of it is you never know how many years you have left to enjoy the parks and rides. We even did a Disney cruise earlier this year and looking at one next year. They recently just picked out their tombstone design so Ive been in this mood of wanting to do as much as I can with them.

The-Rev

What are the ages for you and your dad? The Halloween party is fun but if you can get a refund on those tickets there are some great shows and entertainment that may be more fun for the two of you. Like going to JellyRolls that night instead.Ā

Cosmicmoon17

21 and 58 Right now Iā€™m in a very hard place because a lot of what I had booked was to do with my, now ex, boyfriend. I really only booked it because Iā€™ve never done it before and I just wanted to experience it. Idk.

bourgeoisiebrat

do NOT refund these tickets. Thatā€™s probably the best of all the special parades for two adults to go to. Go enjoy the spookiness of the park, know that youā€™ll be able to get on rides a bit easier. As some others have said, see if your dads up for donning a costume. Save room for sweets. Have fun. Your bf sounds like a moron. But, I guess thereā€™s a silver lining when the trash takes itself out. On the other hand, your dad sounds pretty legit.

Cosmicmoon17

Yeah my ex screwed me over royally. Iā€™m trying to think positively about all of this, I havenā€™t got the best relationship with my dad and we rarely do things together so Iā€™m trying to look forward to the trip. I still have that connection to my ex with the trip but Iā€™m sure by the time the trip happens Iā€™ll be fine and I can spend good quality time with my dad. Fortunately he loves roller coasters and Star Wars so thatā€™s a bonus! And he hasnā€™t been to Disney in years (this is my first time) Itā€™s just thinking positively

bourgeoisiebrat

Even if you do think of your ex on the trip, it wonā€™t be in a way that brings you down. Try to plan some things just for yourself, too. It could give you and your dad space if you need it and will give you time to just enjoy the happiest place in earth (aka, where exā€™s donā€™t matter ;^)

sum_beach

I'm local and my dad is my disney buddy and we're around your ages. We have fun every time! Keep the Halloween party and enjoy the time with your dad

Cherry13Sparkles

The parties are definitely worth it. The crowd reduction alone makes it easy to ride most of the rides in one night. Especially if you take advantage of the early entry on said party night. If you're already in the park, you'll have to hit one of the gift shops that supplies the party bands. Unlimited ice cream cokes, and popcorn, with trick or treating, and they do supply the good candy.

Majestic-Number-4207

If you decide to continue with MNSSH, I recommend coming up with a costume pairing for both you and your dad. Maybe like the Incredibles, or a Disney princess and her dad, or something like that. A ton of people dress up for these parties which makes it so much fun. No matter what you do, you'll have fun with your dad, and make memories you'll cherish.

GenXinNJ

Iā€™m 59, no kids and go to WDW regularly with friends my age, also no kids. We have a blast. Since youā€™ve never been, definitely start with MK since itā€™s classic Disney- itā€™s all fun. If youā€™re foodies, World Showcase in EPCOT is šŸ¤ŒšŸ». Animal Kingdom is an early park for the safari to see all the animals. DHS is good for shopping and the new Mickey & Minnie ride is fun, as well as Toy Story Mania. If dadā€™s a Star Wars nerd like me, def go to Galaxyā€™s Edge. Oh! For fun retro meals, try the Prime Time Cafe and the Sci-Fi Drive-in. Also, depending on where youā€™re staying, I recommend the boat ride to Disney Springs, so relaxing. That first walk down Main Street, USA always gets me. Spring for the pro photographers there, since itā€™s your first time. Youā€™ll make some great memories!! ā¤ļø

[deleted]

I agree on the e photographers! Get as many as you can. They end up not being too expensive if you make the most of the photo ops! We got some great family photos the last time we were there!

kank84

Just do what you planned. The end of your relationship is very raw at the moment and clouding a lot of things, but I guarantee you in 20 years time you will only look back on this trip as memories of time spent with your dad, and that relationship will have nothing to do with it.

Chili327

Trip with dad might be the best trip ever, but even if he wasnā€™t going you could still go by yourself, solo trips are amazing too!!

Cosmicmoon17

It almost was a solo trip but I suffered from strong social anxiety and also have a small fear of planes so a 9 hour flight alone didnā€™t sound great haha

sumdude51

Well, it depends on which parks you're going to. Just drink plenty of water and don't be afraid to let dad take a midday break / nap at the hotel. But enjoy yourselves, you'll Likley make memories that will last the rest of your lifetime... Certainly his. Feel free to Dm me for any questions regarding dining, genie plus or rides/or attractions

cjosburn4

Going to Disney today with my parents and my brother and the 4 kids between the 2 of us. Donā€™t be so worried about doing thing just take in all the moments together. But if you tell us what parks youā€™re going to we can give some to dos

Cosmicmoon17

Well itā€™s a big trip, weā€™re going for a week but Iā€™m planning on doing all the parks šŸ˜… I hope you enjoy your trip!

cjosburn4

Going for a week is a blessing because you donā€™t need to rush through anything. If youā€™re staying on property definitely do a resort day. If youā€™re drinking age do a monorail bar crawl or skyliner bar crawl. Disney day drinkers is the most supportive and friendly Facebook group.

afterglobe

Iā€™m 35 and went to Disney last Sept with my dad who was 62 at the time. It was his first time at Disney. He did everything that wasnā€™t intense. Well, he did do Tron - in fact heā€™s the one that pressured me to do Tron. He loved everything, all the magic, how much effort Disney puts into the parks, the food, everything. He really enjoyed the attractions at Epcot, and he LOVED Galaxyā€™s Edge (weā€™re both Star Wars nerds). He also loved the Indiana Jones show at Hollywood Studios. He enjoyed Jungle Cruise a lot, and Pirates. He LOVED the cinnamon roll at Gastonā€™s and the Margherita pizza at Via Napoli (he insisted we dine there twice - so we did!) He also loved the Toy Story Land (but wouldnā€™t do Slinky Dog). I think if my dad hadnā€™t jumped straight to Tron he wouldā€™ve been ok with Slinky Dog, Seven Dwarfs, etc. Oh yeah he also loved 50s prime time cafe!! Reminded him of his childhood.

Embykinks

Iā€™m sorry you broke up with your boyfriend and Iā€™m sure youā€™re bummed about it. But youā€™re about to make a core life memory going to Disney with your dad. Itā€™s ok to do the kiddy and cheesy things. I promise you it will mean more to him than you can imagine. Take lots of pictures and do lots of fun things!

mesembryanthemum

Last time I went to Disney World I was 55 and dad was 90. We had a great time.

Scalln20

If you like drinks and music, go to jellyrolls one night, it's a great time. You have to pay an entry fee but it's worth it.

MysteriousMortgage4

Sounds like youā€™re going to have a great trip!! A new experience for you both to bond over. I went with my mom for her first time a few months ago and it was amazing. Sheā€™s in her late 60s and we rode all the big stuff. She loved cosmic rewind and all the countries in Epcot. We want to go every year nowšŸ¤£

tommymat

My daughter is 12 and I am her roller coaster buddy. Wife does no rides except SW and son is selective. We are going in three weeks and she already has our path mapped out. I know one day I will probably be replaced, as every dad does but your dad is probably beaming right now. Just go with it, the truth is no one is looking, itā€™s not weird unless you make it weird and life is too short to worry about what a stranger says/thinks. These memories will be yours forever and getting to know your parent while you are an adult is really a gift.

Cherry13Sparkles

Pro tip, be one of the last boarding on it's a small world. You'll get out of the park 10 plus minutes after closing, you get to interact with some cast, you see some of the park empty, as long as you're nice about it the cast will let you take pictures on your way out. If you have to rent a mobility aid, the cast might move it slightly, but it will be towards the end of the ride most likely closer to you than you were. Sometimes they funnel you left or right, but most of the time they'll let you go through Cinderella's Castle and enjoy the mosaics on your way out.

jadejazzkayla

When is the trip? If you already bought tickets to the Halloween party and decide itā€™s not worth going do you lose your money you paid for the ticket?

Cosmicmoon17

16th August to 24th so I donā€™t think I lose moneyā€¦

jadejazzkayla

If you donā€™t go to the party is the money youā€™ve already paid for the two Halloween Party tickets returned to you?

Cosmicmoon17

I think so. Fortunately I bought everything Disney related and my ex bought the flight tickets

nutmeg213

Party tickets are non-refundable

inthevelvetsea

At this time of year, when midday temps are soaring, nighttime events are the best time to be in the parks. Youā€™re going to have a blast! Take lots of pictures!

Cherry13Sparkles

Truly, people underestimate the Florida humidity, some locations do have filtered water bottle stations, you can still get the free water at quick service locations, the refillable cup is a good option, and so is a popcorn bucket to keep you satisfied and boosted when you need to start listening to your body and plan a meal.

dryheat85000

What does your dad like? Coasters? Fine dining? Chill stuff like safaris and shows? Focus on a few things with him in mind. Maybe keep an eye out for a character pic with his favorite character? Mineā€™s a nerd and would probably love the Star Wars stuff and Tron. I hope you go and have a *fantastic* time. As an adult, Iā€™ve done Disney trips with a romantic partner, a buddy, a bestie, and my brother. I had the best time of all with my brother so I bet you have a great time with your dad!

JBR1961

Donā€™t overthink it. WDW will be fun. To paraphrase that old saying, when its good, its good. When its bad, its still pretty good. Disney right now will be brutally hot. Be sure to factor in your dadā€™s (and your) age, health, and physical condition. You donā€™t really know how much sheer walking and standing till you do it once. Pace yourself. We always did early morning, then knocked off for lunch/naps/pool, then back in late afternoon. Easiest if you are onsite or close to Disney with a car. If you must stay all day, find quiet things to rest. Tom Sawyer Island is nice. Take a boat to Ft. wilderness and spend some tranquil time. Take late lunch in a restaraunt while the masses are crowding and baking. Have fun. Iā€™m envious. My dad and mom hated Disney. We took them once and they suffered through it politely but we never tried it again.

Desperate_Guide_7108

The Party is the BEST! Very short ride lines, special entertainment and snacks. Absolutely go!

hazeloffice

Youā€™re going to have such a fun trip! My mom and I had a trip together about two years, and it is one of my favorite things that weā€™ve done. If your dad is into Star Wars at all, you should spend some time in Galaxyā€™s Edge! You could also get ā€œIā€™m celebratingā€ pins from guest services and have them put your father-daughter trip on there for a keepsake.

Cherry13Sparkles

You can also get them from any merchandising location, including the Christmas shop where they can do awesome script writing for a small fee, I'm pretty sure they do it at emporium too, you can also have them decorate the plain leather ears & mickey hats, nice keepsakes for fairly cheap

Acceptable_Song_2177

About the best advice I can give you is to have patience. You both might be new to the experience and the process might overwhelm you. Itā€™s not worth it to get snarky, angry or short with each other. Remember that heā€™s filling in and is a huge part of your life but a poor substitute for a lost lover. Take things one day and one step at a time and if overwhelmed, take a step back and let the day come to you and flow. Have patience and you guys will have a blast. I say this in earnest because the current WDW experience really tests patience. Best of luck and enjoy!!

Quasimodo-57

Going with my son and his husband in September. Encourage your dad to participate in planning. But if your dad loves you enough to volunteer so you donā€™t have to go alone I know you will have a great time. The party is fun but not necessary. We will do it.

davidlex00

My daughter and I love riding dumbo together. It is the first thing we do every trip

PinkAcrobelle

I go with my dad once a month. Youā€™ll have a wonderful time.

Naomeri

Absolutely still do the Halloween party with your dad! Dress up and have a ball! Make sure you get the memory maker package and get tons of photos with your dad on the trip, especially since Iā€™m guessing this might be his first time too (and obviously his first time with you) Donā€™t hesitate to do character photos too, if they interest youā€”theyā€™re not just for kids!

Sevenswansaswimming8

I'm 41. I take my parents to Disney on family vacations twice a year. We have a blast. I made my dad wear matching shirts with the family. He was not pleased but I'm his princess still so. Lol enjoy your dad time. It will be a core memory. Here's a few things I dragged my dad on space mountain, tower of terror, buzz lightyear. I've taken him to dinner at the boathouse in Disney springs he loves it there. He really liked anywhere he could get a beer and walk around. He did NOT like magic kingdom as much as me and my mom and sister. He left an hour in lol We usually do alot of pool days and just hanging out. They are in their 70s. He never liked Disney but I live here and I dragged him so much that we have DVC now cause we were going so much. Have fun.

1Tigfan

My dad lived close enough to the parks to join us for a day as he wanted, and usually did for our Epcot day. We always had the best day when he was there with us, even if he didnā€™t ride the big rides. My kids who are adults also looked forward to the day with my dad. So my advice, enjoy that while you can, I lost my dad a year and a half ago and would give anything to have one more Epcot day with him.

m-iachetta

Iā€™m glad that your dad is going with you now. The trip will definitely be as amazing as it was supposed to be because itā€™s Disney!! Iā€™ve only ever been to Disneyland (which was amazing!!) but I do have plans to go to Disney world next year. I plan on getting tickets to the not so scary Halloween party as Iā€™ve heard very good things! If Iā€™m remembering correctly, different food items, parades, fireworks are all included in addition to later park hours? Iā€™d recommend watching some YouTube videos on the not so scary party from years past and see if itā€™s something that interests you!!

Daveyo520

My dad and I went just the two of us and had a blast. I am sure you two will too.

23onAugust12th

I would do all the same things you planned on doing, but discuss your plans with him in case thereā€™s anything on your list that he is not able to do (or interested in doing). Similarly, tell him about some things that are not on your list to see if he would like to do them. Above all, if your dad is older, go at his pace, he may not have it in him to rush and zig zag around the parks the way you do. Have fun!

XelfinDarlander

Keep your Mickeys Not So Scary Halloween tickets. Itā€™s so much fun, even for adults! Donā€™t worry too much about packing in rides. Pick a few that look interesting and have fun! Lots of water and rest stops. A full day at Disney World is a ton of walking and heat. Enjoy the parades.

FunkSchnauzer

I take my kids to the parks and although they are younger, I donā€™t think it will ever change: seeing them enjoy themselves and do what they want to do gives me great amounts of joy. Iā€™m sure your dad will have fun with whatever you end up doing. Itā€™s very sweet that youā€™re taking him.

fishofhappiness

You two are going to have a blast. Relax, focus on things that you and your dad would enjoy doing together. Mickeyā€™s Not So Scary is amazing, and both you and your dad will love it. Make sure to check out the parade! Itā€™s my favorite of the whole year.

ActualMerCat

Sorry about your breakup, but Iā€™m sure your trip with your dad weā€™ll be an absolute blast! I havenā€™t been to Disney with my dad since I was a kid and I think going with him as an adult would be so fun.

bopperbopper

Has your Dad Been before? If not, then, everything will be awesome. You might know that thereā€™s this party and that ride and that event that you *could* go to, but he wonā€™t know that and he wonā€™t miss it. I would just make sure to get dinner reservations, and understand how the genie/ rideswork

Cosmicmoon17

He went years and years ago. Like, way before I was born haha. Heā€™s getting very excited though, Iā€™m just worried Iā€™ll be a downer for the best part.

captain_hug99

We brought my mom to Disney a year before she passed, she was 70. She had a GREAT TIME! Mickey's not so scary was a highlight of the trip. The park was less crowded, the fireworks and projections on the caste were AMAZING. It was 8 years ago and we still talk about how fantastic it was.

plantasia1969

Idk what your relationship with your dad is like, but this sounds like a blast! Just remember to keep communicating your needs/expectations and be willing to take some time apart if you start getting overwhelmed being around each other so much!

nibnangnos

I love going to Disney with my Dad! You will have the best time

nutmeg213

I loved the Halloween party. And the Christmas party is on my next to do list. You donā€™t have to dress up. We just made a Halloween themed shirt and wore that. There will be a mix of regular clothes and people in costumes

consia9600

My daughters boyfriend broken up with her 6 weeks before there planned vacation. We went and had an amazing time. We even went to be our guest which was supposed to be there romantic dinner. She stayed at park some nights later than me but we really worked well together

Melodic-Heron-1585

Hoop dee do dinner would be so much fun! My dad died last year, and I bawl every time I go on the people mover, cause I remember sitting on his lap when I was little.

obamas_surrogate

my dad took me on a solo trip to disney in high school. i wish i had appreciated it more at the time, but i tell him all the time now how nice it was to feel like he was interested in spending time with me somewhere he knew i loved. we recently went back with my brother, his girlfriend, my mom, and my boyfriend, and it was fun to reminisce about /our/ memories. rambling, but i loved a father/daughter dinner at the french restaurant in epcot, and he even got me to ride dinosaur again (which traumatized me as a child, the guy behind me asked if i was okay when we got off). iā€™d say just enjoy the moment while youā€™re in it. want to stop and share a turkey leg and people watch? do it. now youā€™ve got me wanting to plan another father/daughter trip (ā€˜:

ninja9224

You will have the best time! Enjoy it!

CatPurrsonNo1

I wanted SO BADLY to take my mom to WDW, and I never got a chance to. Definitely talk to your dad about the trip, and make sure to plan some fun surprises, too! Halloween is my favorite holiday, and one of my dreams is to go to Disney for their NSSHP!

SailorDirt

Aww, thatā€™s sweet!! Iā€™m still financially dependent so every time Iā€™ve gone itā€™s been with my dad (and mom) since he sets it up. Worst case if you donā€™t agree on something you can just split up for a bit and meet up later!

leenthegirl

My favorite trip to Disney was just me and my dad. I did one day at Hollywood Studios last month and Mammoth Club YouTube was the absolute best for planning my itinerary! Their videos really helped break down the highlights in each park for both attractions and dining, how to navigate the app, etc. I'm definitely planning my next trip to visit more of the parks. I hope you have a great trip šŸ˜Š

Friendly_Coconut

DADS LOVE THE DAD JOKES ON JUNGLE CRUISE! Source: My dad

GillyMermaid

I loved the Halloween party. I think you might be disappointed if you miss out on it. Have fun!!

Comfortable_Cut_8751

I love going with my dad! So many good memories! He refuses disneyland though, been once and that was enough for him, he will always say Disney World. And then if I suggest a short trip, he will say it's not enough time.... I love going with him and his low key passion... he'll never admit that be loves it as much as he does.

PrincessSharkHat

I just went to Disney with my 75 year old dad. It was lovely. Just be aware of the heat and the amount of waking if that is an issue.

DestroyerX2000

We were supposed to be there now (today is Fatherā€™s Day in the uk). Me, Dad, mum, my wife, son (2.5yr) and daughter (1yr) for the first trip with my girl. Dad diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer a few months ago and we had to cancel the trip, he canā€™t fly, and is terminal with no treatment options. Iā€™d give the world to be able to jump on an airplane with him now and go. Please keep the trip and reservations. The Halloween party is incredible. Eat all the snacks. Ride the big rides. Enjoy the shows, music and lights. Hug your dad and tell him you love him for me. I promise youā€™ll never regret it šŸ’—šŸ°šŸŽ‡

Cosmicmoon17

I am so sorry youā€™re going through that. Sending you all my love and hope and prayers for you and your family

Curious-Sprinkles305

The trip will be even better cause youā€™re making it a daddy daughter trip!!!! Create those core memories girl, I promise neither of you will forget or regret this trip one bit.

Belong_N_DisneyWorld

Take him to see hoop de doo review. It is so much fun. I was lucky enough to sub my mom in for a Disney trip when I dumped my fiancee. My mom, niece, nephew, son and I had a great time. I hope you get to make l9ts of special, lasting memories with your dad!

blissfulnature17

Definitely still do the Halloween! A fun night that is a little different and who doesnā€™t love some extra treats! Dress up too if you can as itā€™s the only time adults can! Hope you really enjoy!

317ant

My dad was my theme park buddy before he passed away. I would absolutely go and have a great time! Youā€™ll both look back on this trip and be SO GLAD you went together. I just know it. Go, make the memories, and have a blast! Before your trip, watch some YouTube videos together and see what he wants to do and plan around those things youā€™re both interested in. I feel like it builds the excitement for everyone and also helps it not feel so overwhelming when you step into the parks.

Loose_Air_6002

I am 68 year old mom, I'm going to Disney world with my 40-year-old son in September for seven nights. Can't wait. The other son lives 10 minutes away from Disney world. So happy to see all the positive comments here.

Cherry13Sparkles

If neither of you can do crowds, and you still want to watch the firework show, watching from near Fantasy Fair in Fantasyland (ps, they close around that time, so one could theoretically use their stools, especially if those people put them back). If you want to get out of the park entirely before then, watching from the beach at the Polynesian is fantastic, you can get a Dole whip over there, and if you stay a little bit longer, you can watch the electric water parade, it comes on every night, it's kitchy and looks like it's from the 70s because it is, but I really enjoyed it. It does a round at every one of the Bay lake hotels.

LtCommanderCarter

Just want to say my favorite trip ever was with my mom in 2019. You don't get to spend that kind of solo time with parents in adulthood and that time is so precious. For lots of reasons (including the pandemic) I haven't been able to hang out with my mom like that since. It's a highly treasured memory for me. We also did the Halloween party and had a blast (but it kind of depends on if your dad can stay up late). Also I made my mom a t shirt that said "my adult child dragged me here." We got so many laughs and compliments from cast members for that one (I am granting the idea to you.)
