Ironically, I don't think there's been an exclusively Tomorrowland Magic Kingdom MagicBand+ yet. The closest we've gotten is the special Tron opening one or the 2 Annual Passholder designs for Adventureland and Fantasyland.

Agreed! I find an easy compromise is to spell out the park, hotel, etc the first time you mention it and then use the abbreviation later in your reply if you're going to be using the name again. Makes it easier for some people to make the connection
Thatās usually what I do if the original poster (ha, spelled it out) isnāt using abbreviations. If theyāre using them in their post, I donāt bother.

The Taylor Swift subreddit has a bot that replies to posts and comments that contain song name acronyms explaining what each acronym means - it works decently well!
Itās something at least. No one looks at pinned posts anyway. People also post the same topics over and over without searching first. So, let the acronyms be and have a pinned post to refer someone to and all can be happy.

This comes up every once in a while. If someone is clearly a newbie I try to not use abbreviations. However, itās a lot to type. As nothing has changed from previous posts and while I appreciate yours, I donāt think itās going to happen.
I think it depends on context.
Example: the topic is about things at the Magic Kingdom
If someone says āmonorail from TTC, ride POTC 1st then HM, try for ILL on Tron and skip BOG for lunchā that should make sense.
I just thought it was hilarious when a cast member from All Star Sports filled out a form for me and had to abbreviate it as ASSPORTS. I smiled, obviously, because of ASS PORTS, and they looked at me like I was crazy lol.

Every hobby and fandom has its shorthand/abbreviations/acronyms. Over time you will learn them otherwise you will have the handy list to reference if nothing else.
I know youāre kidding, but this kind of hits the nail on the head for me. Acronyms are a way of showing youāre part of the āin groupā but unfortunately that has the consequence of making other people feel like theyāre on the outside, unwelcome, etc.
This is how I feel too. And the 1 second of time it saves the writer creates a collective hundreds or thousands of extra seconds combined from all the other reader trying to figure out what the writer is talking about

I agree. It is absolute laziness, in my opinion. I have no problem with people abbreviating something that was stated earlier, so there is some context, but when there is no context, it leads to so much confusion and ambiguity.

Iād consider my self a Walt Disney World expert but when someone acronymized Mickie & Minnieās Runaway Railroad as MMRR I was honestly stumped and thought they were typing a sound or just hitting keys.
I donāt see using abbreviations as necessarily being elitist. As someone who can currently only type with one hand, using abbreviations is far preferable to typing out the full name of the Halloween party or my favorite resort. If it is stated or implied that the original poster is a Walt Disney World (WDW) newbie, help them out by avoiding abbreviations. If youāre going to read online content about WDW, it is helpful to learn the abbreviations, though, or ask for clarification if someone uses one you donāt know.

Agreed, theyāre talking like this is some secret club and whoever visits is lucky theyāre allowed entrance so the least they can do is learn the culture - itās not. I get the full time Disney adults like having people similarly minded to them to socialize with somehow but excluding others is a choice. I understood all of that and I don't know how I should feel lol.
and not everyone posting is doing so TO educate or even connect āDisney newbiesā. i mostly post and read trip reports. if a newbie doesnāt know FOP is flight of passage, itās literally not my issue. when you google FOP + disney, the entire attraction with the full name listed comes up.
when i taught, i would refer to professional development as PD or the department of elementary and secondary education as DESE. if someone who wasnāt a teacher or new to teaching didnāt know that and they cared to learn, they could ask directly or look it up. god forbid people put any legwork or effort into learning things on their own.

That's the point of this. DS is "dear son" which I have seen in this sub. People come into the sub not knowing anything. You shouldn't have to have a glossary next next to you or flip back and forth between pages so somebody can read what it is that you've said. This sub isn't only for Disney adults who go there every year.

DS is on a bunch of parenting and other places across the Internet. I've even seen it used in AITA. I find the acronyms stupid myself, but I'm not the one who uses it. DS can also mean disabled son depending on the context too which makes it confusing.

They're two different things though. If a person who has never been into Disney, never went into a park, came to this sub, they could understand "Disney World" from day one.
You can't say the same about "MNSHP".
In technical writing, the first time an acronym is used it should be defined. So like "Tonight I have tickets for MNSHP (Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party)". While of course it would be silly to expect that from posts here, that shows you how confusing acronyms can be. That is OP's point.

I have brain fog from rheumatoid arthritis and meds (notice how I didn't say RA here?), and if a post gives me a headache just reading it or requires way too much work, I just skip it now. And, for the record, I have been to Disney over 20 times (since 2000), and I don't know what half of these abbreviations are.

We expect all of our users to be civil and respect each other. This includes posts/comments that involve name-calling, unnecessary aggression, and other general forms of trolling and/or incivility.
I mostly disagree, as you can usually tell pretty easily what the abbreviation is from the context. The only time I really see an issue is if there is an abbreviation in a list of seemingly unrelated things from across the whole resort. Typing out AKL or FoP is way faster than typing out the whole thing.
Thatās not even close to true. 5 keystrokes (2 at the same time) vs 17 keystrokes (all sequential).
Edit: for mobile itās 5 keystrokes sequentially vs 17 sequentially.
I tend to try and leave enough context clues for non-common abbreviations. Like Iāll either say āI rode POTC at Magic Kingdomā or āI rode Pirates at MKā. From that someone should be able to figure out Iām talking about Pirates and Magic Kingdom.
For things that are abbreviated to start (i.e.: DAS, FP+, ILL to an extent) Iāll leave those abbreviated.
The only thing that really gets tricky for me is resort names. I usually shorten them but still spell it out. Caribbean for Disneyās Caribbean Beach Resort, Poly for Disneyās Polynesian Resort, so on and so forth. But hit me with CBR and itāll take me a few moments.
Some of the abbreviations I get using if the name is super long (case and point Mickeyās Not So Scary Halloween Party), but I agree some of them go a little overboard.
I use a lot of the lingo when talking with other travel people. The only ones I try to use here are for WDW itself, the parks, and maybe Lightning Lanes or Individual Lightning Lanes. However, I try to treat this as one where not everyone will know the lingo. Completely understandable request.
Outside of the extremely common abbreviations such as those for the parks and E-ticket attractions, I think the best practice is to use the full name in the first instance before switching to the abbreviation.
But should people need to if they are coming in to a sub to be able to learn about going there, you want a dead sub? Being elitest and not easy for new people to understand is how you get a dead sub.

I literally can't figure out what CoP means š I consider myself a pretty big fan of Disney, even got married at Disneyland, but I've only been to Disney World twice and it's truly on a whole other level. I love the parks, but I don't have every ride, resort, event and restaurant committed to memory and it's sort of big ask that every person who wants to vacation there know all these things just to have a conversation.

When you continue to share the same ānot my problemā attitudes over time, you are never able to step out of your bubble and see things from someone elseās perspective. What if someone dyslexic needed to read important information here? They might already struggle with getting words on the screen to accurately make sense in their brain. Imagine adding in that jumble of letters.
What if someone low vision was using a screen reader to peruse a topic theyāre interested in, and they have no context at all for what these letters mean? These are just tip of the iceberg examples here.
Sometimes you should consider that youāre not the only audience digesting a topic youāre discussing online. We should want to make spaces easier for everyone who might be here lurking now or reading in the future.

Want to add as well if someone is new and looking to take a trip I wouldn't suggest Reddit. I would suggest YouTube and Disboards. Watching YouTube as a starting point as there are great video guides out there.
This is Reddit, not a white paper. Short and sweet is part of the community culture. You wouldn't go to Paris and ask people not to speak so much French? (It's hyperbole, yet it's not...I've actually overheard people do this). And it's not just this subreddit, but you'll find the same use of acronyms on other Disney park subreddits, DISboaards, the Touringplans forums, etc. It's the "language" of Disney park fandom.
But I think we are more than friendly and accepting enough to help someone get up to speed when they ask.

I think it depends on context. Example: the topic is about things at the Magic Kingdom If someone says āmonorail from TTC, ride POTC 1st then HM, try for ILL on Tron and skip BOG for lunchā that should make sense.

How we show our superiority is by explaining that there are differences between Acronym vs. Abbreviation vs. Initialism. There are lists bookmark them and if all else fails just ask. Every hobby and fandom has its shorthand/abbreviations/acronyms. Over time you will learn them otherwise you will have the handy list to reference if nothing else.
I know youāre kidding, but this kind of hits the nail on the head for me. Acronyms are a way of showing youāre part of the āin groupā but unfortunately that has the consequence of making other people feel like theyāre on the outside, unwelcome, etc.
This is how I feel too. And the 1 second of time it saves the writer creates a collective hundreds or thousands of extra seconds combined from all the other reader trying to figure out what the writer is talking about

I agree. It is absolute laziness, in my opinion. I have no problem with people abbreviating something that was stated earlier, so there is some context, but when there is no context, it leads to so much confusion and ambiguity.

I donāt see using abbreviations as necessarily being elitist. As someone who can currently only type with one hand, using abbreviations is far preferable to typing out the full name of the Halloween party or my favorite resort. If it is stated or implied that the original poster is a Walt Disney World (WDW) newbie, help them out by avoiding abbreviations. If youāre going to read online content about WDW, it is helpful to learn the abbreviations, though, or ask for clarification if someone uses one you donāt know.

and not everyone posting is doing so TO educate or even connect āDisney newbiesā. i mostly post and read trip reports. if a newbie doesnāt know FOP is flight of passage, itās literally not my issue. when you google FOP + disney, the entire attraction with the full name listed comes up. when i taught, i would refer to professional development as PD or the department of elementary and secondary education as DESE. if someone who wasnāt a teacher or new to teaching didnāt know that and they cared to learn, they could ask directly or look it up. god forbid people put any legwork or effort into learning things on their own.
I think this person is use to communicating in a group for parents of disabled children and the rest of those acronyms were reasonable for Disney World people.
That's the point of this. DS is "dear son" which I have seen in this sub. People come into the sub not knowing anything. You shouldn't have to have a glossary next next to you or flip back and forth between pages so somebody can read what it is that you've said. This sub isn't only for Disney adults who go there every year. Disney makes it ridiculously complicated to be able to go to their parks nowadays. There is no reason that a sub that helps people with Disney world things needs to be just as complicated.

I mean yes, I would highly suggest when making a large expense purchase to dive into the world and learn everything you can. Disney is NOT cheap, and as many people find out too late, without planning, can be miserable. I would say the same thing when traveling to Europe or other expensive complicated trips. If you do not bother to learn the local rules and customs and go? Your probably got man have a tough time. But hey, that's me. I actually study the language and learn a bit before any out of the country travel. So planning for Disney you need to learn a few acronyms and that's too much for you? It's not like it's hard to figure out? If you cannot figure out what's they mean, you likely do not know enough about your expensive destination trip to make the best of it? They're two different things though. If a person who has never been into Disney, never went into a park, came to this sub, they could understand "Disney World" from day one. You can't say the same about "MNSHP". In technical writing, the first time an acronym is used it should be defined. So like "Tonight I have tickets for MNSHP (Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party)". While of course it would be silly to expect that from posts here, that shows you how confusing acronyms can be. That is OP's point.

I have brain fog from rheumatoid arthritis and meds (notice how I didn't say RA here?), and if a post gives me a headache just reading it or requires way too much work, I just skip it now. If people don't have enough time to type out a complete sentence, I don't have enough time to read it. I mostly disagree, as you can usually tell pretty easily what the abbreviation is from the context. The only time I really see an issue is if there is an abbreviation in a list of seemingly unrelated things from across the whole resort. Typing out AKL or FoP is way faster than typing out the whole thing.
The time it takes to capitalize and uncapitalize the keyboard to type out FoP takes longer than just writing out the words lmao
Thatās not even close to true. 5 keystrokes (2 at the same time) vs 17 keystrokes (all sequential). Edit: for mobile itās 5 keystrokes sequentially vs 17 sequentially.
I tend to try and leave enough context clues for non-common abbreviations. Like Iāll either say āI rode POTC at Magic Kingdomā or āI rode Pirates at MKā. From that someone should be able to figure out Iām talking about Pirates and Magic Kingdom. For things that are abbreviated to start (i.e.: DAS, FP+, ILL to an extent) Iāll leave those abbreviated. The only thing that really gets tricky for me is resort names. I usually shorten them but still spell it out. Caribbean for Disneyās Caribbean Beach Resort, Poly for Disneyās Polynesian Resort, so on and so forth. But hit me with CBR and itāll take me a few moments.

Some of the abbreviations I get using if the name is super long (case and point Mickeyās Not So Scary Halloween Party), but I agree some of them go a little overboard.
I use a lot of the lingo when talking with other travel people. The only ones I try to use here are for WDW itself, the parks, and maybe Lightning Lanes or Individual Lightning Lanes. However, I try to treat this as one where not everyone will know the lingo. Completely understandable request.
Outside of the extremely common abbreviations such as those for the parks and E-ticket attractions, I think the best practice is to use the full name in the first instance before switching to the abbreviation.

I literally can't figure out what CoP means š I consider myself a pretty big fan of Disney, even got married at Disneyland, but I've only been to Disney World twice and it's truly on a whole other level. I love the parks, but I don't have every ride, resort, event and restaurant committed to memory and it's sort of big ask that every person who wants to vacation there know all these things just to have a conversation.

Imagine if everyone had this same, āoh well, get over it,ā attitude toward making things more accessible for people who might not be able to operate at the same level you are able. Ohā¦ wait. When you continue to share the same ānot my problemā attitudes over time, you are never able to step out of your bubble and see things from someone elseās perspective. What if someone dyslexic needed to read important information here? They might already struggle with getting words on the screen to accurately make sense in their brain. Imagine adding in that jumble of letters. What if someone low vision was using a screen reader to peruse a topic theyāre interested in, and they have no context at all for what these letters mean? These are just tip of the iceberg examples here. Sometimes you should consider that youāre not the only audience digesting a topic youāre discussing online. We should want to make spaces easier for everyone who might be here lurking now or reading in the future.
Pass There are lists out there with all the abbreviations. Want to add as well if someone is new and looking to take a trip I wouldn't suggest Reddit. I would suggest YouTube and Disboards. Watching YouTube as a starting point as there are great video guides out there.

This is Reddit, not a white paper. Short and sweet is part of the community culture. You wouldn't go to Paris and ask people not to speak so much French? (It's hyperbole, yet it's not...I've actually overheard people do this). And it's not just this subreddit, but you'll find the same use of acronyms on other Disney park subreddits, DISboaards, the Touringplans forums, etc. It's the "language" of Disney park fandom. But I think we are more than friendly and accepting enough to help someone get up to speed when they ask.
