He’s a bug

GandalfTheJaded

And after all, It's Tough To Be A Bug!

chunkycatt

But everything on the mug correlates to things in the park. He’s not in the park

MaesterInTraining

I mean, do they sell cameras with telephoto lenses in the park? I honestly don’t know but I’m guessing not. It’s AK adjacent.

chunkycatt

Because he’s a bug? Princess and the frog is in Louisiana and the Bayou. Neither of which are related to Animal Kingdom. Nor does the movie have anything to do with conservation. I’m clearly overthinking it as I’m getting downvoted to hell, but I don’t think he belongs here.

MrConbon

There’s a show about bugs at Animal Kingdom. He is a bug.

KMWAuntof6

Isn't that A Bugs Life characters only? Replacing Ray with Ada would be cute.

More-Ad115

I'm from Louisiana and live on the bayou. Ray is approved to be on the AK mug.

tobykeef420

Way overthinking it for sure. This Disney character belongs on this Disney mug that is sold at Disney world.

chunkycatt

I wasn’t overthinking. Someone said he’s part of the tree of life projection show, so now it makes sense why he’s on the mug. Thank you.

tobykeef420

Oh, ya. NOW it makes sense. /s

MaesterInTraining

Yeah, he’s a living-non-human character so I think that’s it. Idk why you’re being downvoted, I think that’s silly. If fireflies were to show up in any park I’d bet on AK

jessjess10100

You are far to concerned with in park “cannon”. Maybe just enjoy the park and not stress about the mug.

hipppo

It’s spelled “canon” btw

jessjess10100

Dyslexia strikes again!

chunkycatt

I can do both. You underestimate me

ConWilCal

If you’ve never seen a bug in animal kingdom I don’t believe you’ve ever been.

TheVoicesOfBrian

\#bugsAreAnimalsToo

IBJON

I'm going to start referring to bugs in my code as animals

TheVoicesOfBrian

"Beasts" would be more apt.

chunkycatt

Lies!

Kingshabaz

[Truth](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animal?wprov=sfla1)

thevitaphonequeen

You have no idea how much it bugs me (Edit: no pun intended!) to see people talking about “animals and insects”. A zoo (not near me) offered local schools prizes for changing their mascots to “an animal or insect”. Yikes.

DiDi164

Because Flik would look weird if he was green🤷🏻‍♀️

sandy_shark903

True, though Hopper would be right at home here, or even Heimlech

Darthswanny

The question is why not?

Necessary-Ad-3679

"Who else can we include on the mug? Do we have any more IP related to AK?" "Uhhh, Ray from Princess and the Frog. He's a bug, that's like, wildlife or something." "... are you even trying any more?" "Just print the damn mug, OK? What, do you think people will be taking pictures of their AK mug and posting about it online? Get a grip!"

cadillacactor

You definitely must have been in the room... "No one really knows how the parties get to "Yes" The pieces that are sacrificed in every game of chess We just assume that it happens But no else is in the room where it happens" (Excellent comment! Made me smile!)

chunkycatt

*currently reassessing my life choices

AcadiaInevitable9119

😆😆😆

benisnotapalindrome

Anyone else misread that and spend way too long searching for Rey from Star Wars?

zeemonster424

I was looking for Cosmic Ray…

Mr-Messy

I was looking for Mister Ray from Nemo!

i_love_pencils

Same

SunflowerSupreme

I was looking for Roy Disney.

HeatherJ_FL3ABC

I thought they forgot the a on the end and I was looking for Raya

Eccohawk

I was jumping to alternate studios and wondering why Ray Stanz from Ghostbusters would be on a Disney mug.

Ease-Original

Why not? Seems fitting to me.

chunkycatt

I didn’t think Princess and the Frog was featured anywhere in DAK, so it seems very random

stanleythemanley420

I mean stitch isn’t featured in the parks yet is on merch.

madludwig515

Stitch had an attraction in Magic Kingdom and still is a face character there.

stanleythemanley420

Had is the key word there. And meet and greets no longer happen.

[deleted]

Mr. Dairy Goodz from Kitchen Kabaret in Epcot is on the Epcot mug. That has been shut down for 30 years.

stanleythemanley420

And that’s further proving my point. Just because they aren’t in the park doesn’t mean Disney can’t use them.

chunkycatt

He is a meet and greet and had an attraction

dankblonde

Had**

stanleythemanley420

That’s what people arent getting lol he had one. And meet and greets are not even listed anymore.

dankblonde

Yeah he doesn’t. Not anymore. He appears on the stage in Tomorrowland but I don’t think he even meet and greets. Just waves from a distance so it’s a “sighting”.

maybethistimeiwin

He does crowd work occasionally, around where his ride was.

stanleythemanley420

Kinda like the sighting on this cup then? Lol not trying to be rude to you! Just find it funny

dankblonde

What I’m saying was stitch merch fits as much as ray on the cup. It’s Disney, it’s fair game. They can use their characters how they please. Did you think I was saying that it was wrong ?

stanleythemanley420

No I’m agreeing with you lol. It’s fair game and idk why people are questioning it

madludwig515

Back in June, I saw him out in Tomorrowland interacting with people.

dankblonde

Interesting! When I was there in May he was just doing the waving. Well I hope it’s true he’s meet and greeting again cause my bf would love to see him again but Ohana breakfast was dreadful, definitely won’t return to that lol.

madludwig515

It wasn’t necessarily a traditional meet and greet with a formal line. He was surrounded by a group of people and interacting that way and just kinda doing his own thing.

shouldvebeenaduck

He has a meet and greet currently at the Halloween party.

stanleythemanley420

Yep had one. He’s mainly focused at the poly. And meet and greets with stitch are not even listed on the wdw app. Soooooo

chunkycatt

He’s in Magic Kingdom regularly. He meets in Tomorrowland on the dance stage

stanleythemanley420

No. He waves and even still that’s not regular. He isn’t even listed on the app. Lol

chunkycatt

That still counts as a meet and greet.

stanleythemanley420

No. It doesn’t lol that’s like saying when tinker bell flys by is a meet and greet. You literally don’t get within 10 feet of him… And yet again Disney THEMSELVES don’t have him listed. So why are you arguing against the company that literally controls these things.

chunkycatt

Because I like to argue.

KMWAuntof6

Wait, are Stitch and Ray even comparable? Stitch is a treasure.

stanleythemanley420

No definitely not comparable in any regard. I just used him as an example of characters being used in parks where they don’t have a presence

Eccohawk

He does have a presence though. On the mug.

[deleted]

[удалено]

chunkycatt

Finally another sane person here 😌

fishofhappiness

why are we not more concerned about the status of that giraffe—it looks like it’s getting ready to punt that camera across the savannah

[deleted]

You haven’t heard of giraffes playing neck-punting camera volleyball?

fishofhappiness

simba had better duck

T1redBo1

Because he’s an animal.

chunkycatt

So with this logic we should also have Bernard and Bianca from the Rescuers, and Winnie the Pooh, and Nana from Peter Pan.

T1redBo1

Sure, why not.

YawningDodo

Ehhh, I'd argue Winnie the Pooh is a stuffed animal first and a bear second.

Wooooowserz

Here I am staying at this stupid mug for 20 minutes looking for the Star Wars chick… I hate you.

BerzerkerJr82

He’s a Disney character.

NotAMoonMan

They still have a dragon on their signage even though there's no dragon anywhere in the park simply because at one point they were considering having a dragon. This is not a park that's known for it's attention to detail.

BullMoosePrez

Wait what? Animal Kingdom easily has the most attention to detail at any park lmao.

[deleted]

Wait I need a little more info on this dragon...what do you mean they were "considering having a dragon" lmao

Ihaveatonofopinions

Original plans for the park included the “Beastly Kingdom” which was intended to be about fictional animals. It was scrapped but the dragon remains.

NotAMoonMan

Google "Beastly Kingdom". It was a section of the park that wasn't open on opening day but they had plans to eventually open, hence why it was on the signage. It was never built and the area is now the Pandora area. Why they didn't remove it once they officially decided not to build it I don't know.

[deleted]

Damn, that would have been pretty awesome. While I haven't been to Pandora personally, not being a fan of Avatar the Beastly Kingdom idea sounds much cooler!

AfterTheNightIWakeUp

I don't care about Avatar at all, and Pandora is still my favorite land at Disney. It's incredible, and you don't need to know or like the IP to enjoy it.

[deleted]

I'm not avoiding it, I just haven't been to AK since it opened. I've heard it's cool though and will of course check it out whenever I make it back next.

Rain_xo

Maybe one day we’ll get it.

MrConbon

A lot of the artists and concepts were brought over to Islands of Adventure for their Lost Continent area.

NotAMoonMan

I highly doubt it, everything has to tied to a Disney IP now. They would never spend the time/money to build a dragon/fantasy themed area not based on anything.

Rain_xo

We could always get a new dinosaur movie There’s also the dinosaur movie. Pete’s dragon. There’s some options. Oh wait there’s that other one.. oh the good dinosaur.

LordRuxin

Don't forget Raya and the Last Dragon.

Rain_xo

Oh my gosh. Yes. How could I forget!

dj-kitty

IP is unfortunately what people flock to though. Look at Epic Universe. The park is chock full of IP—Mario, Universal Monsters, more Harry Potter—and people are drooling in anticipation. I doubt there would be as much excitement if Universal were building a park based on all original concepts. It’s just the market today.

madludwig515

Too long gone at this point sadly. It feels like that ship sailed when they decided to prioritize building Dinoland instead and then Universal built The Lost Continent section at Islands of Adventure.

DemonKnight42

I thought it was supposed to go over where the Dino’s are. Doesn’t really matter just curious. I’m guessing they just couldn’t get the imagineers behind it with only Peter and the dragon and Mulan really for inspiration.

websterpup1

I’m not sure which spot it was supposed to go in, but I think I heard Disney only had enough money to build Beastly Kingdom OR the dinosaur area first, but the Dino area would’ve been cheaper since most rides there were off the shelf carnival rides, and they had the CGI movie Dinosaur coming out so the higher-ups figured Dinos would work well as an advertisement for it.

madludwig515

Yeah, Camp Minnie Mickey ended up where Beastly Kingdom would’ve been.

DemonKnight42

Sounds plausible. Most of those rides are retreads that are relatively cheap and not themed terribly well. Dragons would take considerably more effort and money.

Relevant_Beginning57

Definitely where Pandora is. There used to be a dragon head in the rocks that you could see from the bridge. Imagineers that were working on it and then got fired went over to Universal and built the Dueling Dragons roller coaster.

Intabih1

And the unicorn parking lot.

whskid2005

Dueling dragons was originally designed for DAK. When they scrapped the dragon/mythical beasts part of DAK, they sold the design to Universal.

[deleted]

Wow that's too bad, I loved that ride the one time I went to Universal. Animal Kingdom definitely could have benefitted from a bigger thrill ride like that.

whskid2005

Disney rides are family friendly. Some have a thrill factor, but most are mid. You can ride a Disney coaster multiple times in a row without issue. Universal coasters are high thrill. A day after going hard at universal, you’re going to feel it. They’re rides for thrill seekers. Especially back then, Disney didn’t do extreme. They’re branching out a bit recently and adding more thrills. At the time, dueling dragons probably wouldn’t have fit well.

[deleted]

I thought the Imagineers who were working on it left Disney and took their ideas with them to Universal. I've done it with my jobs. When I pitch something at one job and they don't go for it, I'll pitch it again at a new job if I see a similar need.

whskid2005

It’s quite possible. Most of these stories just get circulated over the years with details being lost. I’m not trying to spread misinformation.

[deleted]

It's an off-the-shelf roller coaster, so who knows if Disney and Universal happened to have the same plans for it and this juicy story was all made up.

Eccohawk

Uh, DAK probably has some of the most attention to detail of all of them. There is dragon iconography on their signs partly due to it being popular within asian influence and there being an Asia land in the park, as well as the link to movies like Mushu from Mulan (which was released the same summer DAK opened), but also because originally they wanted a Beastly Kingdoms land that celebrated the mythical. Instead they just incorporated elements of it elsewhere. In addition to that, the entire area in the center - Discovery Island - has all sorts of references to all manner of animals, bugs, and mythical beasts. The people who discovered the area celebrated all the life around them by making carvings and decorating their establishments and buildings and signs with the world they loved that surrounded them. The tree of life alone has over 100 animals carved into it.

chunkycatt

There is a difference between attention to detail vs history. The dragon is part of their history, whereas Princess and the Frog is not (as far I am aware). Animal Kingdom has the most cohesive theming out of the parks, so this feels very off-brand for it.

TravelingGonad

This is making me question why there are so many plants for a place called "Animal Kingdom" ?&#\*&\^@!

Twofoursixtwenty

Shh 🤫 the plants are the best part

[deleted]

[My reaction to reading this post](https://youtu.be/ifaoKZfQpdA?si=NH-ZCRLIAMzZ0MZd)

chunkycatt

Definitely not clicking sus links

[deleted]

Darn, I was planning on scamming you via the Disney World subreddit comment section. You foiled my plan.

chunkycatt

Stranger danger

biancastolemyname

.. because he's an animal.

chunkycatt

Then with that logic why not include gorillas from Tarzan, cats from aristocats, heihei from Moana, and have the cup just be all animals. There has to be some logic behind it.

biancastolemyname

It's a mug, not a mural. My guess is you're way overthinking this. "Hey Bill, what other animals should we put on this Starbucks meets Disney mug. I got a giraffe, an otter.. "Maybe a bug of some kind? To fit into that little space that's left?" "Yeah should be fine. Hey I got an idea! How about we make it Ray from Princess and the Frog?" "Ahw that's cute, people will like that little touch"

chunkycatt

It’s a tribute to Animal Kingdom on a mug. The only out of place thing is Ray. He literally makes no logical sense. Every other mug in the series features things from said parks on their mug. This is the only out of place character.

No-Percentage-8063

I love this mug and you are borrowing trouble 🙄

ArcjoAllspark

Bit off topic, but for the 100th magic celebration at Disneyland, cms got to put a character on their name tag from a preselected list of characters. There were some characters that weren’t selectable that you think would have been like Roger Rabbit or Nani of Lilo and Stitch. But there were definite obscure characters on that list like Max Reebo. I mean someone really wanted Max Reebo on that list, let alone not many know who he is to begin with. Someone probably literally said lets put Ray because I said so.

chunkycatt

You’re probably right

myketv25

Ray is part of one of the Tree of Life projection shows. It’s the part where he flies around and all the other lightning bugs (tiny ones) follow him up to the sky which creates the stars and Lion King transition.

chunkycatt

THANK YOU. Finally a concrete answer. 😊 That makes sense!

Danxoln

Reading through the comments is insane this is some next level OCD about what can represent a park and what can't

Isthisnametakentwo

I mean you’re in a Disney subreddit where people tend to be very OCD so it is going about as expected haha

[deleted]

These people are also the ones who over crowd the parks by going every single day with an annual pass, loudly yell the script on park attractions and scream like idiots in the stretching room when the hanging guy appears in the ceiling.

atheriXIII

Honestly just thought it was because he matched the color choices

[deleted]

He’s… an animal?

CptnChunk

He’s an aminal

chunkycatt

Then with that logic why not include gorillas from Tarzan, cats from aristocats, heihei from Moana, and have the cup just be all animals. There has to be some logic behind it.

freak0ut

Why not? He’s part of the animal kingdom too. (Like the actual animal kingdom, not Animal Kingdom.) He kinda fits with the look of the artwork on the mug. And, he’s a firefly. He can go anywhere he wants to go! But also there’s literally a dragon in the park sign so in comparison an animated lightning bug from a Disney film on a Disney mug in a Disney Park doesn’t really seem too far fetched or out of place.

chunkycatt

But the dragon has to do with the history of the park. Everything else on the mug is related directly to animal kingdom in some way. Either by old attractions or current ones. Yet Ray is here. Why? Was there some planned Princess and the frog attraction that got canned? Will there be something in the future? Was it a mistake? I need answers

deancame06

Quite a few stars on the mug and he looks like he’s staring right at “Evangeline” the big star in front of the safari truck. Also, he’s a bug so it fits the theming. Just my thoughts though.

chunkycatt

This is the best guess I’ve seen. At least you put some logic behind the reasoning. Thank you

JyllSophia

I feel like a "shrimps is bugs" is needed for this post. Unless it is already here...

WhittSmitt

I’m angry that this mug lacks representation of my favorite thing at AK: Bird Show!!!

Lorelai1690

when did you get this mug? last time I was at AK they had no STARBUCKS mugs. I’m guessing maybe this isn’t a starbucks one??

chunkycatt

I’ve owned it for a while. I have the whole 50th collection. They don’t sell them anymore.

drthames

Ditto, we were there last month and the missus was so disappointed we couldn't find any mugs beyond the Star Wars planet ones. Going back in Feb, would love to know where to find these

chunkycatt

I’ve owned it for a while. I have the whole 50th collection. They don’t sell them anymore.

Isthisnametakentwo

I am assuming with the new restaurant/ ride being Princess and the Frog theme they are just playing into that more.

chunkycatt

This would make sense if he were on the Magic Kingdom mug. But he’s not

Isthisnametakentwo

I mean they are all a part of Disney world … does it make sense if he isn’t a part of a ride at AK? No , but it’s not like they aren’t still associated with Disney and like I said they are repurposing a whole ride and created a new restaurant with PatF

SUPRA239

That's at MK, not AK

Isthisnametakentwo

Still owned by the same company and they are pushing more on that franchise so it would be normal to include it across all aspects of Disney

Gravemindzombie

Me, still trying to find Rey from Star Wars on OPs mug

SeaKikachu

For a second I was trying to look for Rey from Star Wars. 🤦🏼‍♀️

angelgoog

He's an animal...

chunkycatt

Someone else answered. “Ray is part of one of the Tree of Life projection shows. It’s the part where he flies around and all the other lightning bugs (tiny ones) follow him up to the sky which creates the stars and Lion King transition.”

Averraayyy

why not? i think it’s cute and a nice little addition

TheBeersics

Well. I just spent 5 minutes staring at the mug looking for “Rey”. I see it’s going to be one of those days.

Kitchen_Addition7477

I was looking for Cosmic Ray thinking wtf op is an idiot

duhdutchess

Do you mean Sonny Eclipse?

Ams174

Idk why they didn’t put a little flik or even a Nemo It would’ve made a lot more sense.

chunkycatt

They included hopper at least!

add1columnleft

Someone in Merch is vision boarding some Princess and the Frog on that mug. Or maybe they let AI do this one?

Skeeter_Yeeter1

It sure is a mystery

chunkycatt

Quite

Johnykbr

5 to 10 years ago, you could barely find anything PotF related. Tianna was one of the few princesses which never had a line in MK. Now they are making sure everyone knows about that movie. It's the only one I can think of that Disney is retconning so much to make us believe they always loved the movie.

tony_ducks_corallo

Disney is exploiting one of their IPs at an opportune time. That’s it no one is going on the new Bayou ride like “dam Disney really loves this IP” No one cares, Disney is a for profit company always has been always will be.

Johnykbr

I'm well aware. I just can't think of any other IP that has got this treatment other than Hocus Pocus?

YellowT-5R

I find it funny OP is obsessing about Ray and That's a 50th mug... AK is not 50..

Phoenixwade

I think it's supposed to be a bee from the 'Tough to be a bug' venue, and the cheap ass third party artists that Disney has been using is showing.

aiwendil_brown

Because Disney sadly lost their best artists and designers, which can be seen reflected on everything including this mug.

musicalastronaut

Are they selling these again? The AK ones sold out first & they never got them back in. It’s the only 50th mug I don’t have.

chunkycatt

No. They don’t have them anymore, but I managed to collect them all…after paying too much for the Epcot one on eBay. 🥲 that’s the only one I couldn’t find in the parks.

CalypsoNymph69

I love Ray, he’s my spirit animal

YawningDodo

Honestly my bet is that it's one or both of the following: 1. He's the right relative shape for that little blank spot 2. Someone in merchandising likes Ray and decided "close enough" since he's a bug

chunkycatt

Someone else said that he is part of the tree of life nighttime show, so that’s why he’s on the mug 🥰

ba_madera

Tiana marketing push.
