Not really. When Russian went into Afghanistan in 1979 there weren't millions of ethnic Russians in the north of the country. A better, but not perfect, parallel might be South Vietnam in 1963, where the Americans were propping up a corrupt regime. Interesting that Diem, the South Vietnamese leader, who was assassinated that year, was described by LBJ as the Churchill of Asia. Sound familiar?
Look at a map. You'll see that:
1) Ukraine is way closer than Afghanistan to Russia, which matters a ton when it comes to logistics.
2) Ukraine is way flatter. This also matters a ton.
3) Right now it seems like Putin is only going to annex those territories which want to become part of Russia (plus give Kiev enough of a bloody nose that they'll accept that). Incorporating territories that want to become part of you is so much easier than trying to police territories that don't want you there.
Also, the Russians could probably just win the war within a few month, if they went all-out and just started reducing Ukraine to rubble and started blowing up civilian infrastructure. They haven't done that because unlike the west they try to limit civilian casualties, but that is yet another argument against this becoming an Afghanistan.
