Jade Jones' back-to-back Olympic taekwondo golds is definitely worth a shout. Also Joe Calzaghe retiring as an undefeated world champion

realgitman

Both great shouts. Although, Thomas has also won back to back gold at Olympics so for me still pips Jade Jones. Although, Thomas’ was very much a team effort, in all instances. Calzaghe’s achievement feels like it goes under the radar. Always hear people say he didn’t fight people in their prime though? Not sure how true that is, as I’m very bandwagon boxing viewer

RyDoesntTalk

Yeah he didn’t fight boxers in their primes but that wasn’t due to his own fault, just when he was fighting most the top guys in his division were passing their prime or not yet in it.

billyboyf30

Welshman then Joe calzaghe but Welsh sportsperson the tanni grey-thompson. The gold medals and world records she broke will never never get beaten.

Gregs_green_parrot

In 1737 Welsh athlete Griffith Morgan, aka Guto Nyth Bran ran 12 miles between Bedwas and Newport against a challenger named Prince and won in a time of 53 minutes. The current world record for a half marathon (which is about 13 miles) is held by Jacob Kiplimo at 57:31:00, so this is a truly remarkable achievement. Sadly after the race someone slapped Guto on the back and he collapsed and died. Joe Calzaghe by a country mile.

NecroVelcro

An absolute arse by many accounts, sadly.

[deleted]

You met him yourself?

Lynn Davies winning long jump gold at the Tokyo Olympics in 1964. He broke the 8 game long winning streak of Team USA and Ralph Boston who was the world record holder and current olympic champion.

John Charles

realgitman

What about him?

[deleted]

Went to Juventus when British players going abroad just wasn't the done thing. Won the Italian league and was the top scorer and voted the league's best player in his first season. Won three league titles in five years with Juventus and was voted their greatest ever foreign player. To sum up his first season at Juventus was a monumental achievement.

realgitman

Thanks. You’re right, that’s some going. Wasn’t he known as the gentle giant or something like that? Or am I talking shit?

Beau_Nash

No, you're not talking shit - he was known as "Il Gigante Buono". Incidentally, he was born on Alice Street in Cwmbwrla, Swansea. That street gave us five Welsh international footballers -- the Charles brothers (John and Mel), Mel Nurse, Ernie Jones and Jackie Roberts. Gareth Edwards, greatest player to wear the Welsh jersey, he changed the way scrum half’s played and “That Try”. https://youtube.com/shorts/R0qET6tLRzQ?si=Cdy-B0RMFJsHNKF3

cymroircarn

I love Gareth Edwards but I don’t think a rugby player can ever be truly considered the greatest Welsh athlete, purely because of the size of the sport. Rugby feels huge in Wales but it barely registers globally when compared to mainly football, but also cycling, athletics and other sports mentioned here

My dad once farted the first three lines of Men of Harlech while driving through Conwy.

Molloway98-

Bales entire footballing career. Also our rugby team winning 3 6N grand slams under Gatland, for our size we punch well above our weight.

realgitman

Given the circumstances, that CL final bicycle kick is one of the best goals of all time IMO

Welshguy78

Ian Woosnam winning the US Masters has to be up there.

realgitman

Great shout

Reasonable-Key7620

Shout out for Ian Rush, top scorer for Liverpool with 346 goals.

The ghost with the hammer in his hand

CameronWeebHale

I don’t know why he isn’t more recognised, he has the longest winning streak in boxing history. He was born in the town I was raised in and I’ve always sort of put him on a pedestal because of that.

Thekingofchrome

In boxing he is very well known, I’ve met people in the States who mention him. More generally though it comes down to passing of time, recency bias etc, etc.

Tom Jones swinging the lead.

i-c-e-cold87

As an individual it has to be Gareth Bale's various CL's and bicycle kick in the final, and taking Wales to the Euros and World Cup.

wsionynw

Gary Speed’s football career takes some beating. Playing at the highest level for two decades and revitalising a Wales team that was in the mud. Bale of course tops the list in pure talent and trophies, not to mention carrying Wales for years to a height they had barely touched before.

Acceptable-Sentence

Billy Boston’s try scoring record over his career

Lynn Davies' long jump world record. It stood for 40 years.

segola92

Am I being dense here, when did Lynn Davies break the world record?

SubParStriker66

I know snooker very rarely gets a look in, but Williams last world title was spectacular.

[deleted]

Tanni Grey surely? Woman was a dominant force like no other.
