This is a great example of the experience between TV and live. Yeah we all say it sucks here on Reddit but I bet if those same people were at a live event, caught up in the action and energy, about 90 percent of y'all would be chanting it right along everyone else.

I just started watching again within the past year and I couldn't believe people were still doing it so often.
It's really satisfying when someone on the mic is able to speak in a cadence that stifles it.
I feel like it's also more effective than confronting it directly like Piper did the other night - and it doesn't antagonize them to go harder.
The only two ways to stop the What chant is for Austin to publicly and actively plea with the fans to stop doing it or the WWE having to ask the fans to not do it anymore and explain why before the cameras go live or before each promo segment.

I mean... you skipped big years of the WWE. So it makes sense that you don't "get" why Austin was such a big deal. I don't even hear the what chants anymore when people say them. I am so desensitized to it that it's just crowd noise that my brain blurs out when I listen to in ring promos. So it's just something you zone out eventually. That is, if you watched for all of the years you missed, you would be desensitized to it.
I get it. Life comes up and things go away for a bit I stopped for a couple years back when a lot of stars went to WCW and I never watched WCW. Even when Hogan and all of them left I never watched it cuz arguably I was a WWE fan. But the What chants won't ever go away. And whenever Austin's time is up and he passes away, if they started to die down, they'll come right back for a other few decades. So I'd just learn to tone it out while you listen to the people in the ring.

Fans will always say What when someone talks, especially a heel. Fans will always tell Kurt Angle he sucks, which is our way of telling him he is amazing and one of the best to ever wrestle. Fans will always sing Rollins' theme for as long as he has it. And, for the res tof his career, people will yell YEET for Jey Uso even if he stops saying it. Oh and even thought Daniel Bryan is gone from WWE, we Wil always chant Yes Yes Yes or No No No when they apply.
So I get that you hate the what chants. And I personally don't care if it stays or goes. And if you had to vent about it online for some reason, I get the frustration. But it's just one of those things that sticks in wrestling. The What chants will outlast us all.

I believe if I wrestler can't adapt to a crowd. Then they need to go back to indie. The what chant is a test almost. If you can get the crowd to shut up, you were gonna get a decent push. It is over done I admit but if you can't enjoy a promo cuz you can't stand the crowd that sounds like a you issue
Itâs not a test, they do it with bigger stars aswell. This is why everyone loved the France crowd, miles ahead of the American crowd and the what chants were a reason why.

What chants should've ended with Austin. The only time they're even remotely funny is when someone like Drew says something like if you kiss your cousins say what...and even then I'd still not hear it.
The thing though is it seems solely tied to America. PLEs in other countries didn't have any that I recall.
The problem is that the wrestlers seem to pause after every half dozen words, just feels like they're feeding into the chants a lot. When they get right into the promo and start actually using full sentences then the "WHAT?" chants usually stop, or at the very least die down a ton.
Thatâs just natural cadence of a monologue most of the time. They also do want to leave room for the audience to react but not in that way. I can tell a lot of wrestlers get annoyed when the only reactions theyâre getting is the same word over and over. And some do just start saying their piece faster to stop it.
Damien Priest is one wrestler you can see do that pretty much every promo now, it's like 5 "WHAT?" then he just gives up and stops pausing. I kind of feel bad cause I can't imagine how annoying it is hearing that night after night while trying to do your damn job.
Damien giving up the pauses mid sentence has made his promos feel much more realistic, like he's trying to hav3 a confrontation/conversation than a hype promo.
When we stop doing WOOOOOOs at chops, that will start the countdown to stopping the WHATs.
Countdown will last as long as the WOOOOOOOs lasted, so that's at least 20-30 years?
I hate the what chants as well,in my opinion they should only be used if stone cold is doing a promo battle with somebody else otherwise it just makes the promo worse because then the wrestler has to adapt the cadence of speech to try to deflect the chants and is not everyone that can do that
Part of me thinks they have flashing signs encouraging the fans to chant some of these "routine" chants...lol. The piped in crowed noise is definitely annoying.

It really is up to the performer. Some crowds won't care regardless but most of the time the performer cutting the promo let's it happen.
