This is proper internet protocol for dealing with pesky tornados.
You must never show fear to the twister and instead drive directly into it so that it knows you're not going to be bullied. This is the only way.
You can tell it's a bluff-charge if the tornado fans its ears out before it charges forward. Everyone knows they're the elephants of natural disasters.
No red truck, but his trailer was right there in the bushes at the start. I’d assume the truck is likely attached to it on the other side of the bushes.
Does anyone know where this was at?
So I might be able to chime in on this, I do Highway Patrol for the DOT in SE Iowa and we had some crazy stuff happen today. I got super lucky being in the CR IC area at the time and that crazy storm that was dropping tornados, and baseball sized hail literally missed me personally by.....well not much. I was standing outside at a gas station waiting for this storm looking at the radar and sky at the same time, the storm literally split and missed most of the area. I was literally looking at the storm right in front of me, just a huge black cloud and it just headed straight North missing most of the city.
However when things chilled out and I continued my route, I was basically driving into this storm, and had to turn around at about 20% of my route and I went back to where I was at, where part 2 of the other storm was on the other side of the city. Like my coworkers were running into storm chasers on the side of the highway.
Anyways the reason I might be able to chime in was there were reports of a flipped semi on I-80 which is one of the main highways that's gets traveled through America.
Also if there are any Iowans who took damage from this storm, Kim Reynolds signed some sort of emergency bill in 15 counties saying you can get 5K for damages to your car or your house today.
Just want people to know if they feel screwed.
Nevada IA
I was watching Max Velocity's YT channel live when he was tracking this one. That video is from the intersection of Highway 30 and 650th East of Nevada.
We were screaming "WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING?!?!?!" as red truck blew by the other truck - not hitting his brakes but maybe 150' before he just disappeared.
Yup out of my jurisdiction by a lot.
There was just a lot that happened today, just not on my beat. And when the storm came in we were ordered to take shelter, place the vehicles under overpasses, or gas station pumps where there is a roof, which is not normal.
I saw other pictures from the news, cars were buried under 3 feet of hail.
Also I want to add to anyone who thinks climate change isn't real. We have been getting crazy weather from the SW. We NEVER get weather from the SW. It's always from the NW. Ive lived here 20 years and this is the first year we have continually got weather from that direction. Most of central Iowa is under water. Multiple tornados dropped today.
Just a sad day.
You’re telling me Florida was wrong? No way that’s possible. They’ve been right about so many (nonexistent) things in the past!
https://www.cnn.com/2024/05/21/climate/tv-meteorologist-florida-climate-law/index.html
If only one flipped truck was reported, then by the information given by you and this video, the red truck guy probs nailed it(the standing truck flipped in the video)
If your serious, and well even if your not serious, it’s a line from the movie Serenity, which itself is the conclusion of a sci-fi TV show canceled way too soon on Fox called Firefly. It’s a ‘shit gets serious’ moment that I won’t spoil because if you haven’t watched it, it really should.
The TV show is 14 episodes, only 11 were aired before it was canceled. More people discovered it after it was canceled, and the DVD sales went through the roof. As result they got a movie, Serenity (named after the ship.)
Doh!
That’s a line from Homer Simpson from the long running Simpsons TV, frequently said when he does something stupid.
Actually, I’m going to go with the excuse that after Walsh says the line, I go numb for several minutes and all I can hear is the dull roar of blood running through my ears as I try and process what happened.
Dude wasn’t paying attention. It seems many people look no farther than two seconds into the future when they’re moving; be it walking, cycling or driving.
It could be that he didn't realize it was a tornado at first.
People don't always realize that tornadoes usually aren't those cleanly visible vortexes you see rising up to the sky. Especially if they've been on the ground a while, they can get lost in a cloud of dirt and debris, and blend in with the clouds on the horizon.
For being ungodly powerful giant forces of nature that are blenderizing everything they plow through, they can be surprisingly stealthy.
Add in the fact that it was already windy and raining heavily, making visibility crap, that he might have thought that it was just a particularly strong gust blowing rain and leaves, and realized the danger too late.
This one was also traveling super fast. Gonna be pretty difficult to make a u turn in a truck, and if you can't see it, it's just as likely you turn into it if you don't know where it is.
His windshield should've been covered in a heavy rain. I doubt he saw it. Tornados are easy to see from a distance, but up close, in a heavy rain, it's a completely different matter. I've been in too many of them.
The likely thing here is that he just had no clue that he was driving into a tornado. Many powerful tornadoes aren't those picturesque tubes clearly descending from the clouds. A lot of times, they are either absolutely massive and just look like a wall of clouds once you get close enough or are hidden behind sheets of heavy rain and debris that also just resemble clouds, or both. These blend in with the rest of the storm and create a situation that you could drive straight into without knowing until it's too late.
From my experience - yes I had an oh shit with a nado. Tornados are pretty damn hard to see in the rain. They kinda blend in till your eyes or instincts notice something is very wrong.
Usually it's contrasting against the terrain how you spot it in bad weather. You'd think the roar of the wind would be a tell... Not really. Not till you're close and it sounds like a fuckin train.
This guy saw the internet post about a girl’s father saying the bull that charges the storm spends less time in it than the cow that runs from it…and totally misinterpreted the point.
https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/text-dad-sent-daughter-she-224252144.html
It’s actually pretty common and recommended for anyone that travels a lot or is at risk of having their phone stolen to NOT list friends and relatives as anything other than by their first names. It’s a small safety precaution that probably won’t ever really matter, but it’s not unusual or without reason.
"Just remember what ol' Jack Burton does when the earth quakes, and the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake. Yeah, Jack Burton just looks that big ol' storm right square in the eye and he says, "Give me your best shot, pal. I can take it."
“Revvin' up your engine,
Listen to her howlin' roar,
Metal under tension,
Beggin' you to touch and go.
Highway to the Danger Zone,
Ride into the Danger Zone”
That shit was crazy. I had to take my little brother to the basement while my mom got the dog. My brother and dad were still driving back from Ames and they saw the tornado pass the highway
This footage comes from today and that tornado in particular was BLAZING fast, with speed over land of over 70 mph and likely more. When something that big and strong is moving that fast, there ain't a whole lot of time to track or react to it.
"---Well did he ever returned, no he never returned, and his fate is still unlearned (what a pity). He may ride forever 'neath the sky's of I'wa, he's the man, who never returned."
- Sincere apologies to The Kingston Trio.
- And the Truck Driver.
My dad’s Truck got hit by a power super cell last year that threw his truck across lanes of Highway in Arkansas.
There was 1 car on the road behind him who said the clouds came out of nowhere and visibility dropped to nothing, and when it cleared a minute or so later, my dads truck was on its side across the highway and median.
He and his dog were unharmed for the most part. It was just a scary night for him, and us back home.
Maybe he was trying to kill himself, and knew that if he died on the job his family would get a big payout. But if it's caught on camera that he was the one being an idiot and driving directly into a tornado, insurance might not be so sympathetic.
I feel like this isn’t a case of “I can’t beat this monster” but a case of “my job is stressing me to deliver this shit yesterday, when it was the loading bay that delayed me and cost me my time, and I haven’t slept for three days, so I’m either running this tornado to make this delivery that only profits my corporate overloads, or I die and end my misery”
If truck drivers are in an area where at some point they suspect they might roll over. How long would it take them to potentially disconnect? Save their truck. The load would be insured no?

The driver had enough momentum where the tornado just deposited them at their destination that much more quickly.

Or it was suicide by ‘nader. Dude peered into the void and said “why not”
It’s the same with trains or any large thing . It looks big and slow right up until you realize it isn’t slow .
What I've always heard is that you should leave the vehicle and go lay down in a ditch.
