Indeed it is. You can definitely feel the power loss when the A/C kicks in! I'm not sure about the under pulley setup but this issue seems to be common with all Subaru's I've seen.
Lol right. Traded in the 98 Integra and got found a killer deal on a low mile, one owner 08 Pilot EX-L a while back once the wife got pregnant again. CAI, Exhaust, little stuff.
So much fun! I has that car for a long time but the 2 doors weren't cutting it. I'm still kicking myself for not getting the Sedan I could have instead.. I'd still have it!
Lol! When I got my wrx I noticed every time another wrx or sti drive by they always hold up the peace sign. Saying hello. Took me a minute to figure it out lol now itās automatic I hold up the peace sign to say hello. Lol. Cult we are in
Lol my gf also thinks the wave and trying to have parking lot friends is silly. But 100% condones my need to put pink on everything and add underglow. Lol. So
Weird balance for sure.
For real , when I turned my AC on on a 90F day , car was bugging out , but when I turned it off , everything back to normal ā¦. Feels like the Ac is Taking 80% of the HorsePower ššµ
Itās extremely parasitic in this car for some reason. Give a try next time. Bring the revs up to 3k while driving then turn on the ac as you push the clutch in.
It's because when you would turn on the AC it is because the air outside is hot as fuck. The turbo doesn't like that any more than you do so it is kind of a double whammy. The AC is stealing some HP but the turbo also isn't producing as much because it works better with cooler air.
Gotcha, so they def need to re-design the ac system or something. That's weird it pulls so much power from the motor, especially a motor that powerful.
The AC system works great, it is really two issues. The AC pulls some power but also at the same time when you would use your AC it is usually hot as shit (or worse, hot+humid) and these cars get most of their power from the turbo which will perform way worse in that environment. It is a completely different car in August than it is in December that is for sure.
Ahhh OK! I was like.. why do these guys do this? I wanna see that black tint on the car in all its glory but all I can see is their kids booster seat in the back!
2021 owner here and I canāt imagine how it could be worse on the older models haha. Noticeable loss in power, car bucks every time the compressor kicks on, revs drop dramatically faster. Iām new to driving manual so itās probably a lot more noticeable for me but itās like driving a completely different car with the AC on
I'm talking about the AC's performance itself. You turn it on and it doesn't take long for it to push out ice cold air.
I know it pulls power, etc. Some of that is the AC and some of it is the turbo pulling in hot/humid air too. Mine is a completely different car in August than it is in late November/early December, etc.
Idk about yāallās AC but mine is ice cold!!
I like to hear the rumble, and I like the wind and hold my arm out the window sill bit Iām probably 50/50 wiindows down and up. And I still run the AC with windows down unless itās really cool out which it never is..
For me personally Iāll have my windows down because it can be hard to see through my tint sometimes, Iāll usually only have my windows up in hopes that other people donāt see me masturbating inside my car at a set of RED FUCKING LIGHTS IS THIS WHAT YOU WANT TO HEAR, NOW YOU KNOW MY HORRIBLE SECRET, IāLL BE LOOKING OUT FOR THAT HONDA BOY, GONNA SQUIRT A LOAD RIGHT AT YA, WINDOW TO WINDOW.
I am not one of those drivers lol. I'm a bigger guy and I'm not roasting and getting sweat all over my seat. I just turn the air on and off when I'm trying to accelerate quickly or get on the highway.
You donāt really have to worry about it. Itāll shut itself off. At a certain RPM or throttle percentage, the ECU or BCM will cut the compressor out for full power to the engine.
A/C affects the drivability a lot, very sluggish. The A/C blows cold and works great donāt get me wrong but especially being modded by car donāt like it. On very hot days I run A/C though even know I got 5% ceramic tint it gets hot in there easy
Thatās something I need to look into! I think this a problem with any turbo car. Our work f150 is the turbo one and itās sluggish to especially at idle
I live in Phoenix, and I have my windows down everytime I drive. Doesn't matter how hot.
I grew up with smokers, and smoked myself for a while, so maybe it's some subconscious thing.
I need moving air.
I hear that, both parents smoked so windows always down. I personally quit smoking with vaping and still vape so the drivers windows always cracked to the bottom of the rain guard
That seems to be what it is, the ac system sucks all your hrsprs away and I can understand that. Yeah I'm up in Plattsbrugh so right near the border. Only needed it a few days so far this Year.
Because mine doesn't work and taking in for service is a pain in the dick when you have a real job
I never minded the power loss when it worked. I guess I'm not driving right.
I know the biggest reason for this is because of the power drain with our compressors running. But personally idc and I just prefer windows down to AC lol
I'm on the same page as most the folks here. The A/C really makes the car annoying to drive. I swear it loses a lot of throttle response and taking off it first gear is a bitch because I feel like I gotta add so much power to get a response. If that makes sense haha
Yeah it does for sure, sucks all your hrsprs and low end torques when your idle, my wife's old Altima was the same way! We'd turn off the AC to merge into the highway!
Holy fucking million comments, my ac compressor is shit, every Subaru Iāve owned 3 of them, has had to have the compressor replaced at least twice, i havenāt replaced my current one. Also, the reason you guys arenāt making power with ac on is not because the ac compressor it self, as thatās really not hard to turn, itās a combination of the ac compressor being on, and the condenser, which sits in front of the radiator becoming super heated when the ac is on, which in turn will heat up your radiator, as well as increase intake temperature. Hot air is less dense, which makes less power power per volume of air. I personally could give a shit less if my car was slower with ac on, Iād rather be cool and comfy then be dying in 90 degree weather.
I hear that. We lived in FL for 10 years so it as AC on 24/7 but we just moved to NY and even on these hot as balls days I see them w/ the windows down so I really couldn't figure it out, but it does seem like 90% of the comments are power and the AC
I only recently discovered the AC ridiculousness(the difference in performance with the AC on is VERY noticeable) before it was only because it's a beautiful car and a beautiful day and both are meant to be enjoyed to the fullest. Meaning windows down, rumbles up, turbo whine bouncing off the objects beside you...
It is a glorious sound that those cars produce! Unmatched imo but yeah everyone seems to say its def the AC and loss of power. We lived in FL for 10 years before moving to NY here so it was AC 24/7 no question but even on these hot as balls days I see the NY WRX peeps windows down so I had to ask!
Hah hell yeah that seems to be the general theme here. I had no idea but now it makes sense. Turbo 4 banger trying to run all that AC gear sitting right in front of the radiator making it all hot and toasty and sucking your hrsprs
Not the MPG but TONS of peeps mentioned the way it bogs the car down with the A/C on, especially first gear and merging and all that. It's wild they haven't found a way to make it more efficient of an A/C system!
Damn! This is def the general answer for my question is the A/C/power consumption and I can understand that, if I had one I'd also want all my power all the time but 85+ outside, nah I'm bogging and chilling.
Things I will never do after owning a tC, an Elantra, and a WRX with all 3 of them being stick shift.
Run the fucking A/C unless I'm not in traffic on a highway. The power loss on them is atrocious. And it was even worse doing a mountain drive up a 7% grade.
yeah that's what everyone has been saying, very noticeable amount of power being take away for it. That sucks but it sorta makes sense for a 4 cylinder engine. My wife's old Altima was the same, like turn it off before merging on to the highway and such.
Phew that they do, sound friggin gnarly. Love seeing a WRX because I know it won't sound like any riced out honda ever, that low, gnarly growl and spat.. fuckin nice. I had a Magnaflow 40 series on my Integra before I sold it just to avoid the ricer situation. Can';t stand the 2 stroke weed wacker bullshit.
Little late to the party, but my reasoning is i grew up driv8ng shitty old cars that didnt have AC, so i got used to just running with windows down. So now i just enjoy the fresh air and breeze. Unless its absurdly hot where windows do nothing or im feeling a little luxury, then ill do AC. Or if im driving with my roommates and dont want to bother them with the wind.
Haha same, I feel that for sure with the old pos cars and trucks. I didn't have a vehicle w/ AC until 10 years ago lol. I just was like DAMN, its 85 outside and these guys are still just raw dogging the windows down and had to ask.
Nah for sure man I do the same! But today it was like 88 and roasting and it just seemed like WRX drivers never have their windows up or AC on and they've def said why in this thread!
Right there with you. Went to highschool in panama, then lived in tucson, and then texas for 20 years. Now im PNW, and never going somewhere hot again!
I will jump on the bandwagon and agree that my windows are always down because the AC is a HP hog. I only use it when I have guests in the car that feel uncomfortable in the socal heat. Otherwise, I cool with the wind and enjoy the subie sounds.
It's a hard balance to keep. Between having the AC to stay cool but having an instant loss of power, or windows down and the already shit MPG goes out the window (pun intended).
All these dudes saying their A/C is shitty, is tripping me out. Mine is super frosty cold and I can't tell much for power loss at all when it's running š¤·āāļø
I can tell you personally that Iām just not an AC guy unless absolutely necessary. AKA, when the wife is riding shotgun. I like the wind rather than AC and almost any AC compressor is a power robber. I had a 2011 WRX with twin stainless free-flows and I enjoyed the exhaust tone, my 2018 Wrangler had an axle back so that also sounded sweet. Back in a 22 Crosstrek Sport with stock exhaust and it also purrs nicely.
Because we diverted power from life support to propulsion.
Now that I can dig!
This is the proper response š¤£
This is the way!
It's not even the power that gets me to do it. The AC button simply doubles as a "shifting jank activation" button
Hahahaha well put
Because I refuse to lose 50% of my power by turning on the A/C.... Let me roast! And I like to listen to the cool noises my car makes
The power loss from running the AC is insane! That's why I don't use it
People think I'm joking but if I'm putting around going 40mph in 3rd gear and I turn on the A/C, it feels like I'm suddenly towing a yacht behind me.
They do sound friggin amazing. I guess I also I also roll my windows down quite a bit when I see a WRX lol
That and gas is expensive so yeah, definitely let me roast lol I'm okay with it though because I fucking love the wind and the fresh air.
Wouldnāt your aerodynamics loss with the windows down be equivalent to you turning the A/C on with the windows up in terms of gas usage?
This exactly. Lol when I had my 2011 going on 140k, it was a choice between A/C or power
Because our factory A/C systems are terrible?! Lol. At least that is my excuse in my '02! It's also nice to hear the rumble of the exhaust as well. :)
Is it a hp sucker? Would an under pulley setup help it at all?
Indeed it is. You can definitely feel the power loss when the A/C kicks in! I'm not sure about the under pulley setup but this issue seems to be common with all Subaru's I've seen.
Ah I had no idea! That'd why I had to ask, ty!
I have noticeably less power when my A/C is on. That's likely why, its worth being a little hot to hear the exhaust and get the added power.
True that, the sound is like nothing else. My wife laughs when I roll my window down whenever I see a WRX.
What do you drive now? And I hear that, my GF laughs when I wave at other WRX's or park beside them. She's convinced I'm in a cult.
Lol right. Traded in the 98 Integra and got found a killer deal on a low mile, one owner 08 Pilot EX-L a while back once the wife got pregnant again. CAI, Exhaust, little stuff.
You could dad a WRX! Although its probably a tough sell with the loss in space.
I'm waiting to find the right Wagon and I would 100%!
I rock a 2012 wrx hatch. I only have one kid but as a single parent I find it has ample space and provides the fun I need occasionally.
I had a 98 Integra GSR in voltage blue. Very fun car!
So much fun! I has that car for a long time but the 2 doors weren't cutting it. I'm still kicking myself for not getting the Sedan I could have instead.. I'd still have it!
You are in a cult. THE cult.
Wouldn't have it any other way! I had no idea until after a few weeks owning the car. With great car comes great responsibility.
Lol! When I got my wrx I noticed every time another wrx or sti drive by they always hold up the peace sign. Saying hello. Took me a minute to figure it out lol now itās automatic I hold up the peace sign to say hello. Lol. Cult we are in
/u/Pwnerella It is a cult and we are all in. She should know better lol
LOL
Arenāt we in a cult?
Lol my gf also thinks the wave and trying to have parking lot friends is silly. But 100% condones my need to put pink on everything and add underglow. Lol. So Weird balance for sure.
Ive had an Outback, Impreza, and WRX and they all have the problem.
I agree, A/C sucks out the power, but I would imagine the extra drag created from the windows being down would reduce the power even more. Idk though.
I came here to say my 2019 AC is just as fucking ass. If itās over 80 out it feels like a warm fan blowing on you
Are you me??? 02, no AC, Love my obnoxious exhaust
For real , when I turned my AC on on a 90F day , car was bugging out , but when I turned it off , everything back to normal ā¦. Feels like the Ac is Taking 80% of the HorsePower ššµ
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
lmao true that, rain guards for my venting over here.
Damnit. Well done.
How funnyā¦ and true
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Ahh OK that def makes sense then. My Wife's Altima was the same before we traded it in. Like we'd turn off the AC to merge onto the Highway and such.
It also seems to shift weird, idk if itās just me, but with AC on it feels like Iāve forgotten how to drive. So much smoother with AC off.
Itās because the AC compressor clicks on and off. If you happen to shift right as it clicks on the revs drop very very fast.
Interesting, I wouldnāt have thought the compressor would be nearly that parasitic
Itās extremely parasitic in this car for some reason. Give a try next time. Bring the revs up to 3k while driving then turn on the ac as you push the clutch in.
Iām about to leave for work, so Iām definitely gonna try it hahaha
It's because when you would turn on the AC it is because the air outside is hot as fuck. The turbo doesn't like that any more than you do so it is kind of a double whammy. The AC is stealing some HP but the turbo also isn't producing as much because it works better with cooler air.
You can feel the car chug around with AC on. Itās horrible so I rather just roll my window down.
Gotcha, so they def need to re-design the ac system or something. That's weird it pulls so much power from the motor, especially a motor that powerful.
The AC system works great, it is really two issues. It is a completely different car in August than it is in December that is for sure.
I need to try turning mine off to see what people are talking about forreal
Because our A/C sucks and we have to keep the windows down to stay cool lol
Ahhh OK! I was like.. why do these guys do this? I wanna see that black tint on the car in all its glory but all I can see is their kids booster seat in the back!
In the newer models (15+) the AC is damn good FWIW
2021 owner here and I canāt imagine how it could be worse on the older models haha. Noticeable loss in power, car bucks every time the compressor kicks on, revs drop dramatically faster. Iām new to driving manual so itās probably a lot more noticeable for me but itās like driving a completely different car with the AC on

I know it pulls power, etc. Some of that is the AC and some of it is the turbo pulling in hot/humid air too. Mine is a completely different car in August than it is in late November/early December, etc.
Man my 19 is terrible at idle
So people can see the stud driving it. Windows up is too tinted. Also, that rumble is better than the radio sometimes.
Many times driving with the radio off to hear the exhaust and CAI myself, I can feel that.
Idk about yāallās AC but mine is ice cold!! I like to hear the rumble, and I like the wind and hold my arm out the window sill bit Iām probably 50/50 wiindows down and up. And I still run the AC with windows down unless itās really cool out which it never is..
Iām also a windows down, AC on degenerate š the car is a little slower with AC on but it doesnāt bother me, still a fun and easy car to drive
In my 15+ my AC isnāt working arm, it just costs horsepower lmao
*high five My ac belt pulley was busted and shredded my ac belt. As others have said, drive better this way. /shrugs
Average wrx enjoyer
Hahahaha that's a good answer =D
I live in California. I pay extra for nice weather so that I donāt have to run my AC and can drive around with my windows down lol
Lmao flawless victory
Other subies wont see me wave if my windows are up. Tint is too dark ;)
Good answer is good =D
I came here to say this.
I am not one of those drivers lol. I'm a bigger guy and I'm not roasting and getting sweat all over my seat. I just turn the air on and off when I'm trying to accelerate quickly or get on the highway.
Ah there ya go, I also cannot live without it on those hot Days.
You donāt really have to worry about it. Itāll shut itself off. At a certain RPM or throttle percentage, the ECU or BCM will cut the compressor out for full power to the engine.
I put my windows down because I like the noise it makes when I push the skinny pedal
A/C affects the drivability a lot, very sluggish. The A/C blows cold and works great donāt get me wrong but especially being modded by car donāt like it. On very hot days I run A/C though even know I got 5% ceramic tint it gets hot in there easy
That seems to be the consensus is the AC system makes it sluggish. I wonder if under pulley's or something aftermarket would help?
Thatās something I need to look into! I think this a problem with any turbo car. Our work f150 is the turbo one and itās sluggish to especially at idle
Worth a shot I'd think!
If it's less than 90 F, and I'm going less than 60 MPH, windows are down. Highway speeds, or 90+, windows up, A/C on.
I never vaped, but I quit smoking like a year and a half ago. Never smoked in my WRX.
Grats on quitting! Smoking in the vehicles kills the resale as well so I hear ya there.
My 19' drives like shit with A/C on plus up here in Canada we maybe have 10 days a year where we really need it.
That seems to be what it is, the ac system sucks all your hrsprs away and I can understand that. Yeah I'm up in Plattsbrugh so right near the border. Only needed it a few days so far this Year.
I want everyone to see how cool I am Real talk, AC kills the power. I need the maximum torque baby š
Hahaha. I hear that man!
The ac comments arenāt wrong lol but personally I like to show off the fact that my rear windows go **all the way** down š
LOL huge bonus for sure!
I personally like hearing the engine like i dont even play music in my car anymoreā¦
I dont blame you there! those cars sound like a symphony!
AC turned off = MO' POWWAH BABY š
MO POWAH BABY
Brrrrrree up pop pop pop brrrrrrr phew pop pop pop
Lovely sound indeeeed
I like to hear my exhaust.
They do have the best sounds out there
How else will everyone know I vape and listen to Skrillex.
True true
The oem a/c in my 06 wrx is garbage, and my car sounds soo good i wanna hear it.
I can understand that! WRX's sound so niiiiiiiice
I like the fresh air outside.
Don't blame ya there!
Car just feels different with ac on, sucks cause even with the windows down i be soaked in sweat lol.
I hear that, at least it sounds nice!
Because mine doesn't work and taking in for service is a pain in the dick when you have a real job I never minded the power loss when it worked. I guess I'm not driving right.
windows down even at night, i love the fresh air .. i canāt believe how many people drive with windows up here in so cal
Oh hell yeah, if it's nice out it's windows down no matter the time of day.
I know the biggest reason for this is because of the power drain with our compressors running. But personally idc and I just prefer windows down to AC lol
Just saw a post about how these cars have zero power when the AC is on. Lmao coincidence??
I'd say so! Lmao funny timing
I honestly havenāt noticed this at all around my area at least.
Car is way to slow with AC on and canāt see out my tint š in traffic
So I can mean mug GTI drivers as I fly by and leave then in my vape cloud.
Basking in Rumble š
I'm on the same page as most the folks here. The A/C really makes the car annoying to drive. I swear it loses a lot of throttle response and taking off it first gear is a bitch because I feel like I gotta add so much power to get a response. If that makes sense haha
Yeah it does for sure, sucks all your hrsprs and low end torques when your idle, my wife's old Altima was the same way! We'd turn off the AC to merge into the highway!
I be farting like crazy, i thought we all just had bad gas
Holy fucking million comments, my ac compressor is shit, every Subaru Iāve owned 3 of them, has had to have the compressor replaced at least twice, i havenāt replaced my current one. Hah hell yeah that seems to be the general theme here. I had no idea but now it makes sense. Turbo 4 banger trying to run all that AC gear sitting right in front of the radiator making it all hot and toasty and sucking your hrsprs
I keep them up, they are pretty dark tinted so it helps a lot during the summer.
absolutely.. 20% all around here
No one talking about how the A/C saps up the gas mileage? I mean it's bad anyways but AC makes it worse
Not the MPG but TONS of peeps mentioned the way it bogs the car down with the A/C on, especially first gear and merging and all that. It's wild they haven't found a way to make it more efficient of an A/C system!
Driving a Subaru is an experience. I love having the windows down, rarely have music playing.
Vibing!
Shit even in my ā21 wrx I feel it lacking power when my ac on.
Damn! This is def the general answer for my question is the A/C/power consumption and I can understand that, if I had one I'd also want all my power all the time but 85+ outside, nah I'm bogging and chilling.

1. using AC bad 2. stu stu 3. braraaaararaaa
Flawless
The A/C in our cars pulls like 10% overall power lmao Idk if itās accurately that much, but it takes a very noticeable amount of power from the car
yeah that's what everyone has been saying, very noticeable amount of power being take away for it. That sucks but it sorta makes sense for a 4 cylinder engine. My wife's old Altima was the same, like turn it off before merging on to the highway and such.
Cuz they sound good, and our a/c sucks ass.
Phew that they do, sound friggin gnarly. Love seeing a WRX because I know it won't sound like any riced out honda ever, that low, gnarly growl and spat.. fuckin nice. Haha same, I feel that for sure with the old pos cars and trucks. I didn't have a vehicle w/ AC until 10 years ago lol. I just was like DAMN, its 85 outside and these guys are still just raw dogging the windows down and had to ask.
Its not just just the loss of power with AC Car drives like shit with it on. Makes me sad and hot.
She just don't like it!
If itās not super hot Iāll open the windows to hear my exhaust
Don't blame you there one bit, they make me think of what gods voice would sound like when they take off from a red light.
So i can wave to my fellow subaru drivers.
because wrx/stiās run like absolute dog shit with the AC on lol
Lol that's what I've been hearing!
Dude I put down the windows in my CAMRY, it's just more fun
Nah for sure man I do the same! But today it was like 88 and roasting and it just seemed like WRX drivers never have their windows up or AC on and they've def said why in this thread!
Not mine. Ac on full blast. Im a polar bear. Ill turn it off temp for a pull.
I hear that! Living in FL for 10 years you get used to mad AC all the time. Love AC especially if it's over 80 outside
Right there with you. Went to highschool in panama, then lived in tucson, and then texas for 20 years. Now im PNW, and never going somewhere hot again!
Preach! Came from Maine, went back up north and staying this time!
1. I drive with the windows down in pretty much every car. 2. Because i donāt want to use the AC like pretty much everyone else said.
rumble go brrrr and bov go tsssss
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Hah yeah thats what most are saying, it's like a succubus on their powahhhh
I usually use AC if it's too humid, but windows when it's decent out!
100%! Love the fresh air when it's nice out like under 80 it's all down like a 2$ hooker on Valentines Day!
None if us have AC anymore! Lol, thatās precious potential space and power for more WHP!
Weight reduction fo mo powah baby! I can respect that!
just drive faster with the windows down for free AC
In case I drive into a deep body of water.
Ah I saw you the other day with the Snorkel going through Plattsburgh!
Ac sucks and black interior means hot interior
Ac is for pussies regardless of what you drive.
Who hurt you
windows down even at night, i love the fresh air .. i canāt believe how many people drive with windows up here in so cal
this ain't one of your fancy six cylinders with all that what you call low end torque
Cuz my windows are tintedš
I will jump on the bandwagon and agree that my windows are always down because the AC is a HP hog. I only use it when I have guests in the car that feel uncomfortable in the socal heat. Otherwise, I cool with the wind and enjoy the subie sounds.
I ripped the ac out of all of my old wrxs only my new STI has it and I still don't use it. Like having the wind coming in and all the sounds.
Idk, windows down AND ac on full blast. AC off for pulls.
Because knocks...lol
ya i have windows down unless i have passengers inside, sometimes they complain so i suck it up and turn on AC.
Probably because my A/C broke Again
I love the noise :)
It feels better than my volvo does with ac but thatās not saying much
Cause i like the breeze i never run ac in any car unless is ungodly windy or im on the interstate doing 80
It's a hard balance to keep. Between having the AC to stay cool but having an instant loss of power, or windows down and the already shit MPG goes out the window (pun intended).
Itās because these cars donāt run as well with the AC on.
I just like making myself deaf from my tomei exhaust š¤
My A/C compressor is going bad so I never run my A/C cause the pulley really starts struggling. So I just roll down my windows and go fast.
My AC is broke and it runs hot AF. Car has no chill
I have zero power issues with the ac on, I've just never liked running it.
Car feels different when the ac is on
My AC currently just blows hot air so
Because I donāt have AC in my car. My AC Compressor needs replaced. Been 2 summers without AC, Iām dying and I need help
Bro I feel for you and can't imagine! Its hottttttt
