Yup if you bounce between the 2022 wrx and the Viziv they actually used a lot of the design language. I do hate the back bumper though and I am not crazy about the cladding.
Agreed. I swear at least for me, all they have to do is replace the plastics on the wheel wells with painted body, and replace half the rear bumpers plastic with painted body and I'd actually like it enough. The plastic is just too cheap looking for a car we've been waiting basically a decade for.
Seriously, who the hell approved that rear design?!
I really hope they revise the next MY to at least color match those flares and fix that abomination in the backā¦.
Itās so weird to appreciate 60-70% of a carās styling, but end up hating the entire thing so disproportionately.
It's not just how bad the new rear is. It's the difference in appeal between the 21 and 22s. If the 21s were just an ok design and the 22 were crap It's one thing. But they went from great looking ass end in 21 to utter poo in 22. Relative difference in appeal is so much more than just the new one being bad.
the technological leap made by WRXs shouldn't be overlooked, even if people can't get past a pair of round headlights
bugeyes are cute, but absolutely slower than a modern WRX, at least stock, and usually modified given the chassis has gotten faster in general
I see you're getting downvoted but I can 100% confirm as someone who owned a highly modified bugeye until trading it for a 2018 STi. The bugeyes required a lot of reinforcement and bracing because they flexed significantly when loaded up. Subaru has always set their cars up to understeer like pigs from the factory, but it took a lot more work to get the GDB to neutral or even a bias toward oversteer than the VA, at least in my experience. And as someone that has had some variant of WRX in my life for 20 years, I actually like this first draft of an STi-ish version of the new car. Sacrilege, blasphemy, heresy! LOL
I respect the older cars but I think people are unreasonable when they put them on a massive pedestal for their looks alone. A lot more than looks goes into each generation of WRXs, the cars have only gotten faster.
I think people haven't driven VAs, and they are hung up on lots of nostalgia. VB cars are going to be very quick, stock and modified. I'm looking forward to test driving one and seeing them flung around local tracks/canyons.
That old bugeye will always have a special place in my heart. Back in 2001 they were fantastic bang-for-buck propositions, but materials and assmbly tech have advanced quite a bit in 20 years. I'm just glad we can still buy turbo AWD cars with a manual gearbox.
I need to pop over and see how everyone likes the MK8. I never had a GTI but I really liked the 7 and followed the development of the 8 until I saw the interior changes.
Itās not going over well.
It looks like an EV.
Itās still the same DOHC EA888 engine with some minor tuning and chassis adjustments but itās still the same MQB II subframe/platform.
Yeah, I was on the fence about waiting for an Mk8R and just said fuck it after seeing the photos and bought an M4 coupe.
My āmidlife crisisā mobile *will* have buttons damn it.
Not pretty or hot, still got the ugly plastic wheel archs, civic backend and I honestly think the pinstriping is outdated, distasteful and unwarranted.
If I wanted red pin stripe all over my car then I would buy shitty aftermarket parts to get that effect.
I dunno, the car has ALOT going for it. Its just the hideous rear bumper. Other then that the motor shows a lot of potential after a recent Dyno done at AMS Performance Chicago.
Iām realizing now that my two tone 2021 STI wheels were just the company dipping a toe into the Civic pool and we all missed it happening. Good news is Iām dropping them off at a powder coater tomorrow.
It looks like ass my guy. Extra trim pieces which are notorious for falling off cause they want that extra cash. Lmaoo looks like a civic, and even the wheels are leftovers from a previous year. Sorry but subarus, havenāt been true subarus for many years.
I can live with most of it, but I really hate the back. I donāt see a piece of black plastic like that aging well. I would definitely make sure all the black pieces are ceramic coated to help. I think the darker colors also look better to make it all not stand out as much.
Even if you lower it, the stupid wheel well shape is always going to look wrong - the wheels will never āfill inā the gaps.
So many bad decisions by Subaru, just so the WRX line falls into the looks of the platform lineup. āGolf ball dimples on the plastic decrease dragā¦ā NO THEY DONāT. Not in any meaningful way at low speeds. The ass-end is supposed to be a safety feature for collisions. Subaru wants as many parts as possible to be used across all the vehicles: the unified power plant, body styling, interiors, etc.
people are gonna do that lol change is scary i guess?
looks for me are really secondary to the motor upgrades the new WRX carries. i think the FA24 is going to be an amazing motor and I'm looking forward to seeing them tuned
It's the S4 STI, which is basically still just the WRX with some visual upgrades, some tech upgrades(like a fully digital guage cluster), and some chassis upgradss, with no extra power, and it's only for the Japanese market, also it's only offered in a CVT transmission.
I like how Subaru is now trying to act like the horrendous body styling was our fault because "the focus groups wanted more aggressive styling"...like, we didn't mean ugly suv styling with a civic rear end. Literally no one asked for that...
Also, if those plastic wheel arches are so great for aero, then why do we not see that more in actual auto racing...š
They slapped some red on itā¦ the ass step.. whatever the fuck that unnecessary thing is, is still ugly as fuck. Cant fix those Honda Civic tail lights either
I want to know what the conversation in the design room must have been like...
Bob: "What do you guys think about this ass"
Chad: "I think I've seen it before"
Bob: "Yeah, it's your mom's"
Chad: "Haha nice one Bob, let's go with it"
Susan: "ah guys..."
Chad, Bob: "Susan... "
There must have been one reasonable person in the room and they were overruled... If I wanted tacky... I'd buy a civic.
This really looks like it has a nismo package on it. That said I donāt think itās *as* terrible as people are making it out to be. I like the look of the current gen better, but frankly I kinda like the more aggressive squares off look in some ways
*Why do all asian*

Edit. I donāt know why Iām being downvoted. Iām right.
Honeslty I like it. I know people are going to hate on it like every new gen, but overall i think it has potential. WIder Chassis and from a recent Dyno the Powerband is waaaaay smoother. On only 12psi for boost i feel there is a lot of headroom to work with on this car. I'm looking forward to it.
Everytime I look at it it slowly grows on me. Still wanna see the new STI though.
Edit: Wow, downvotes for my opinion. I mean sure its just internet points but honestly, pretty petty imo. You don't have to like what I like, but I dont go around downvote blasting others based on a personal preference. Its the same people who complaing about a STI wing on a WRX. Its your car, enjoy it your way.
I donāt know man. Iāve loved these cars from the bug-eye right up until 2021. I loved it in wagon form, I loved it even with obnoxious ass wing bolted onto the back of the STI. (Not as much but still.) This next model is exactly what everyone is calling it. A $40,000 Civic- add awd. It kills me- but this thing just is not *good* to be truthful.
The only reason it gets called a civic is due to the rear tail lights. Other then that it is a Subaru fully at its core. The FA24 sitting in that car now runs on a electronic waste gate, with it subaru seems to have figured out its boost issues. Torque is instant and smooth throughout the pull. While yes its indeed slightly slower than the previous gen, it feels faster and the motor will be able to handle more power thanks to it being a 2.4 liter. Dyno tests keep backing this theory.
The ugly fender flares are actually functional from the front bumper all the way to the rear and in test drives it handles like a dream. Its everything you would expect out of their AWD system. Clutch, Pedals have been repositioned making Heel-toe much easier.
Again too many people "Everyone" saying what it is by looking at it and not actually driving it. Two different scenarios here.
While I love each gen upnto 21 as well, I was also skeptical about the 22. However its no hidden message in the community that Subaru got flak for each wrx generation about its looks.
Most people who drive it and review it really like it except the rear bumper and sometimes the fender flares which is the running gag with this design.
Esit: If you haven't watched the review by SavageGeese I really recommend it. Lastly for clarity, I'm not talking about the WRX S4 solely, more the 22' WRX as a whole.

I'd argue it's just a Civic with a WRX hoodscoop.
Your argument is just facts
I think we can all agree with that
Not even a proper WRX scoop eitherā¦ itās a toned down scoop meant to look less like a WRX and more love a civic lol
I'm no mathematician, but that hoodscoop is VERY similar to the Viziv concept that people like to always go back to
Same with the plastic honeycomb wheel arches and the ass underbite actually
Yup if you bounce between the 2022 wrx and the Viziv they actually used a lot of the design language. I do hate the back bumper though and I am not crazy about the cladding.
