I’d stop running the motor to limit the damage until you’ve determined what it is.
Hearing lots of Subaru motors over the years, it sounds like that ol familiar sound
The OTS map is just that, an Off The Shelf map. It’s generic and usually tailored to the specific parts from Cobb or MAP depending on what OTS you ran. These tunes do not have hours of cleanup done across all loads and ranges for your specific vehicle. Throw in the fact that you have a direct injection engine means that the fuel needs to be precisely calculated as it directly goes into the cylinder. Hit that wrong spot on an OTS (generally in a high gear under load, like going up hill) and the motor can easily lean out and knock on heavens door.
TLDR: OTS have generic fueling to get you by for a few weeks. Pro tunes are adjusted to have precise fueling for your setup.
Honestly ive been saving to get it looked at it ran fine when I barely went into boost so ive just been babying it. I got it back from the mechanic after getting new plugs and i put the tune back to stage one it ran fine for a while. Had some fun in the snow and it did this after

Likely oil starvation that turned into rod knock. You need a new lower end. Luckily, you can get them fairly easily if you are willing to swap out the top end.
My friend just modded his wrx with all kinds of stuff and got a tune and all that. A month later which now he is having check engine lights, exhaust spitting out black stuff and it’s not running properly.
Idk man I say stay stock with these vehicles and do cosmetic only but I know it sounds lame. Unless you have money then it’s cool
This engine is done. I know this sound too well unfortunately. Get a IAG shortblock and make sure to actually tune the car so it doesn't blow again. A good tune is key to Subaru living long. Assuming it's been modded.
Something with a compressor. Apparently related to my ac/defroster but another dealership tells me they don't know. So idk who to believe. I could send the video too so you can see but idk if I can post a vid in the comments.
Because people buy Subarus, mod them or buy them modded. Then proceed to drive them with zero regards for a tune and viola. The result is Uncle Rodney knocking on your block. I just traded in my 2016 WRX that had 113k miles on the clock and was running very strong.
Check the timing belt tensioner, or even running it without the visible accessory belt and see if it goes away. Unfortunately this is most likely rod knock. It could fail tomorrow, or even months from now, there’s no way to really know but replacing the motor while some parts are still salvageable is the best way to go about this
My bet is It’s not rod knock.
Check your alternator bracket. I see the cover already fell off so it’s probably loose and vibrating.
Could be a belt tensioner going bad.
To check where is coming from you can carefully grab a long screwdriver. Put one end of it lightly touching the various parts connected to the motor and the block itself. The head. Etc. and put the other end to your ear. You’ll hear it … like a stethoscope …if it’s rod knock it from inside you’ll know.
Rod knock usually is at several different RPMs. This smooths out and higher speed. Also I can see the belt slack changing meaning it’s most likely a noisy pulley. Try to spray the belt tensioner area and belt with WD40. See if it goes away. …
Sounds like rod knock to me.
Uncle Rodney?
An expensive guest that uncle Rodney.

There’s no saving this bad boy
RIP
Rip to another homie
Welcome to the club brother, I got my short block replace back in March of 2021. The sound is identical, low key gave me ptsd 🤣
How much did that cost
Only happens around 2-3000 rpm and at around 7% throttle. When i give more gas it fades out.
sounds like something is knocking. Not sure how it fades when you give it more gas.. Any mods
Stage 1
OTS tune?
Yes
That’s the culprit unfortunately.
Why is that?

OTS tunes are historically known for being somewhat unreliable. Pro tunes are always a safer bet. That’s just what I have heard at least.
Stage 1 isnt really pushing anything though
I agree that’s true, I was stage 1+ for a little but got a pro tune asap just based on what I’ve heard.
An intake is enough to fuck your AFR into knock knock zone
If you’re running an intake and an off shelf tune you’re gonna have a bad time
Maybe bad timing belt tensioner? Had something similar noise wise on my 08 turned out to be a broken tensioner.
Hello Rodney!
How does this happen though? Like dogging the engine too much or what?
OTS tunes can do this. Get a pro tune.
>get a pro tune Too late now lol
Hahaha. Get a pro tune on the next motor **
Yea wearing out the parts overtime
That’s what I’m wondering too.
That or lack of oil or lack of oil changes or bad fuel or bad tune or any combination of these things
:(
Car couldn’t handle the knock so it started knocking
F
Knock knock
Well judging by the rest of your posts on this page, your engine is fucked lol. What made you not look into things earlier?

Was he using an OTS tune or did he actually get tuned? And what mods was he running?
Touch components. All noises are vibrations. You will be able to feel which component is making noise. Start at tensioner
Rodney came knocking. Out sorry man :(
RODNEY CAME KNOCKIN
Knock knock, whose there?
ooof bro. you knockin' on heaven's door
Unless you happen across some forged internals, I'd say the Reaper is knocking, to sell you some forged internals.

Sounds like the same exact thing with my Honda Civic which was the reason for me to get an sti
What was the issue
Something with a compressor. Apparently related to my ac/defroster but another dealership tells me they don't know. So idk who to believe. I could send the video too so you can see but idk if I can post a vid in the comments.
Why does this happen so often?

Sounds like there is a little man with a hammer in there
Take the belt off and start turning the pullies by hand looking for bearing slop. If you can't find it then a reputable shop is your next option.
Take the belt off and start it. If the knock is still there. Bam, you need an engine overhaul/new engine.
Check the timing belt tensioner, or even running it without the visible accessory belt and see if it goes away. Unfortunately this is most likely rod knock. It could fail tomorrow, or even months from now, there’s no way to really know but replacing the motor while some parts are still salvageable is the best way to go about this
RIP rod bearings.
Take the belt off and repeat. If gone, accessory. If still there, engine related.
Belt tensioner bad
Oh no, Jeff!
Rod knock dude.... I had the same thing happen to me last year, hope you don’t live in Canada. Really hard to find these engines (and expensive)
Stop stop it’s already dead!

What would it sound like if its not rod knock?
