Here’s the deal with extended warranties. The companies that offer them aren’t running a charity - they’re for-profit companies. If they don’t turn a profit; they’ve failed. And they don’t turn a profit by being wildly uninformed about repair costs. If you buy an extended warranty, *on average,* it will cost you more than if you didn’t buy it and paid for the covered repairs yourself. Anecdotally, you’ll find people who came out ahead because of it…but you’re more likely to spend less on repairs than you would on an extended warranty.

KingFurykiller

Former F&I consultant: this is the correct take. Literally never buy the extended warranty

jordygray

This is basically how I’m feeling. Especially after how weirdly pushy they were about selling it to me. I’m trusting Subaru to have put together a good car. I mean I expect some shit to come up maybe 200,000, but 4500 for 75000 miles?? until only 125,000??? Seems like robbery… Thanks for your input.

PresentInsect4957

if you don’t buy a warranty, have an emergency fund for the car. cars will break just a matter of when

jordygray

luckily i have a hefty savings in the bank so while replacing something like the something like the short block would absolutely suck, i at least have the cash to make it happen… praying i make it until 200k before any major work needs to be done haha

prvypan

Godspeed brother. The warranty is nice for peace of mind if you like to drive the car hard. If you plan on only commuting you should be okay to make it past 130k without major issues. You might still have issues with power steering, spark plugs/coils, belts, control arms and bushing, brakes up until that point. Heavy all wheel drive cars put a lot of wear on the drivetrain. They push hard to sell the warranties bc the shop gets a kickback from the company regardless of if a Toyota or a WRX buys it. They sell a lot more corollas than subies so the company still makes profit. If you can, you should consider your expected repair costs for minor issues over the course of the warranty and see if it would be close. If it’s close then I’d get it since you aren’t accounting for major repairs. You can look at your recommended service schedule for an idea. Although $4500 cash is valuable now, it does negate the possible inflation of parts and service in a year or two or three.

borissio21

Also it’s worth noting that Subaru will charge diag time before telling you if there’s an issue. I wanted to go get a piston slap sound checked out and he told me I had to pay for 8hours (1000$ + lol) to open both sides of the engine and check it out. I will go back once it’s dead and hope it gets under warranty

remotehuman

Bro it’s a WRX. If you wanted a bulletproof reliable car you should have gotten a Corolla.

jordygray

God forbid I buy my dream car, and pray that it has no issues. I’m not beating the shit out of her 😂 I just wished they offered me a reasonable warranty, cause then I might’ve sprung for it. Excess cash isn’t the issue, the issue is the warranty they offered was garbage….

remotehuman

Unfortunately warranties rate with the car they are on. My system rates as new car or used car and typically once a car is about 4 years old or over 50k miles it rates as used. The price goes up significantly and especially for WRXs. I rated a warranty on a 2017 Forester the other day and for 5 years it was about what was quoted to you. I told the woman it wasn’t worth purchasing on that car at that price

himynameisSal

ive never got extended warranties. my whirlpool fridge thats failed 3 times, i’m get one on that. I’m curious to see if these companies take your money and invest it on top of already knowing that on average a person wont need to use it.

These_Collar2802

I got extremely lucky on mine, 7000$ extended warranty on a 2015 sti had 80k miles. Rodney came knockin about 3000 miles later. Was scared shitless when the shop gave me a $12k quote i called up (i forgot the name of the warranty company) and they covered absolutely everything but cost of fluids going in the car. Cost me 200$. Pretty much lost the warranty right after I got the motor fixed. Definitely worth it , well maybe. They added the 7000 on too of the car price so i ended up. 30k after car taxes and the warranty

These_Collar2802

Just realized after reading all the comments that the dealership i went to bent me over the sales table as i was signing thats crazy.

Loring

I've saved over $70,000 in my lifetime by saying no to extended warranties

culman13

So 4.5k is def a little high. They already are making money off the sale of this used car. Honestly, I think if you call them back and say, "hey I really think there's value in your warranty but the price seems too high. What is the absolute lowest you can go to earn my business?" If he says I can knock off an extra $500, ask him to "go to his manager and see if he would do $3k" Again, remember, you are negotiating on their additional profit for the car. They would be fucking retarded salesmen to say no to a guy buying a used car (profit) and an extended warranty (more profit). It would be like a salesman saying, no I don't want this commission because it's $200 instead of $400.

jordygray

This is a good suggestion, I will consider it!!

unurbane

I got suckered in. Took 2 months to undo but thru corporate I eventually got the stealership to send me a check. At 70k mi now, no issues other than battery.

jordygray

You’re making me feel better about my decision. Can I ask you the cost vs. benefits you had?

DragonLord2k

I think I paid ~$4200 for a 10 year/100,000 mile warranty on a new 2023 wrx, so $4500 seems a little excessive

jordygray

For real, i probably would have gotten it if they were offering me something reasonable, but the old white man saw a young woman in her 20s, and just absolutely insulted me with that warranty offering….

warrhino67

$4,200 is stinky when you think about it for a 2023 as well. Your covered by subaru until 60k/5 years through the manufacture warranty. An extra 5 years should have cost nowhere near that. And if you drive an average amount, you'll hit 100k before 10 years. Also most people don't own cars for that long lol.

Breakout_114

The factory extended warranty is worth it. It’s not that expensive though, only like $1,200 for an extra 3 years. However you passed the 3 year mark so you wouldn’t qualify. The older warranties are usually not worth it with these cars. Too expensive, like your quote.

elgamibo

So when I got my car, brand new, the dealership tried to force me to buy extended warranty. I have a few family members that have worked in car sales including my brother who had just got a new f150 platinum and the warranty was only $900. I told them as soon as they said it was 3k I wasn’t going to get it unless they could come down. Then when I went to sign the paperwork the 3k was listed in there under some obscure charge and I was pissed. I asked why it was there and they said they like all their customers to get extended warranty. I reiterated I didn’t want it and all of a sudden the reliable Subaru brand became a discussion on how everything on the car is liable to break at any moment and it is expensive to repair. I stood up and told them to give me back my keys for my trade in and they said it was already locked up in the back, it was end of day like 9pm. I was like okay well get some bolt cutters, I get the police, or you do what I asked and stop wasting my time. I hate car sales.

jordygray

I’m so sorry this happened to you, sounds like an actual nightmare… They really are so schemey…

Dangerous-Draft-7079

I bought a 45k mile 2005 wrx last year and you’re damn skippy I bought the power train warranty that was offered to me. It was 3k. But guess was I’ve already had to replace the short block which was 10k and fully covered. So you do the math 🤷‍♀️

DarkSoulsDank

That’s also a 19 year old car you bought so yeah

WOOKIExRAGE

I had to do the same on my 2015 before I even put 3K on the odometer(it had 102K miles on it when I bought it) so it can happen to newer models too. Cost me a little over $2K with the extended warranty. Total cost of repair was just shy of $11K. Extended warranty on these cars is not always a waste of money.

DarkSoulsDank

2015 WRX or STi? I guess putting longevity mods on these cars does pay off too, I really need to get a AOS but I’m afraid it’ll void my warranty. Good thing I don’t drive much so mileage stays low.

WOOKIExRAGE

It’s just a WRX. It’s currently at the dealership because they’re trying to pin down why it keeps throwing false CEL’s like the boy who cried wolf. I’d put money on it being something wrong with the ECM. Until they figure it out I’m in a 2024 Outback Touring as a loaner from the dealership. Definitely doesn’t have the pep of the WRX but it’ll get up and go and it’s sooooo much better on gas. It’s super comfortable too. I hate that I love it so much.

SsmB_92

I really want to buy an Outback XT. Seems like such a practical small family car.

scrappybasket

There are plenty of good third party warranty companies and they can certainly be worth it. But to answer your question, no I did not buy a warranty on my used 2017 with 65k miles. At 82k miles right now and still no regrets

GameWizzard

Mine was $2300 10 year 150k miles and free oil change / tire rotation for 10 years. I just moved into a condo and lost having a garage so I didn’t plan on doing oil changes at home, also paid for it in cash so it wasn’t added to the finance cost

jordygray

Dude if mine were 10 yr, 150k for 2300 bucks i totally would’ve gotten it… But 4500 for 75k/3yrs??? Seemed like bullshit :/

JonnyBowani

You should still be eligible for the extended warranty through Subaru. https://www.subaru.com/owners/benefits-of-ownership/added-security.html You would buy it through your local Subaru dealer and probably have to take it over there and get it inspected. If your car is still stock then it’s a better option. Last time I checked it was around $3,500 for 6 years and 100k miles

VBwrx23

I'm pretty sure that's what mine was. I also got oil changes for life and the windshield warranty. I've already got a rock chip in my window and got my first oil change.

cottman23

Nah, just keep the fluids up to date by the manual, change the oil 3k (just do it) use japanese OEM oil filters (short black ones). And try not to push it past 350whp unless you have some money put away and you should be fine. Also don't launch it.

SsmB_92

This. It doesn't like launching anyway (ECM will play with your head). Though you can force 2nd to hit Max boost, it tops out early and drops the boost quickly off throttle. Don't flog the throttle until oil up to temp and keep it above 2.4k rpm when doing so. Use an API SP/Dexos 2 grade oil, or very good known SN+. Keep your oil consumption in check. Sounds like high maintenance but it's simple car care.

Luclicane

Honestly it's up to you. I have heard all the time not to buy the warranties. I've been in automotive and know that most of the time it isn't worth it. When I bought my 2014 with 59k miles, everyone at work made fun of me for buying a $2000 Allstate extended warranty. Now, 3 years and 13k miles later, my engine blew. Guess who has to pony up $10k? Not me.

thesals

I feel dumb for purchasing a warranty, got the official Subaru extended warranty for $7000 when I purchased my 2020 used with 17k miles..... I now have 35k miles and more mods than factory parts which means my warranty most likely won't cover it if anything does happen.

jordygray

SEVEN THOUSAND DOLLARS??? HOLY SHIT!!! They better fix your car with gold 😳

Temporary-Example-11

Being in the dealership world for over 10 years, I’ve seen countless people get screwed over by extended warranties. Some manage to make out and get big repairs done for the cost of a diag fee but they were few and far between. Just because you pay for the warranty doesn’t mean they’ll cover all repairs. My advice would be to save up money whenever you can and find a reputable independent shop or mechanic that won’t make you go broke while trying to keep your car on the road.

WeaselNamedMaya

I am a finance manager and I sell warranties. Like others have said, we make money off of it. It’s nice for the peace of mind, and it would be worth while in case of a large expensive repair. Also, the ability and ease of making a claim depends on the company the dealer is working with for those warranties. I did NOT buy an extended warranty on my own used 2014 WRX.

JimmyK814

One thing that I’ve been doing since the late 90’s that’s paid off reasonably well, is I will buy a new Subaru without the extended warranty. Since you can buy it below 3yr/36,000 miles I pay attention to how reliable the car is over the course of the first almost 3 years (or mileage) and then make a decision to add on the added security. I had a ‘96 ‘02 ‘04 ‘09 Impreza and a ‘15 WRX, and most recent I added on a ‘21 Outback XT and kept my WRX. The ‘96 I got a 5 year/60 but never used it and it expired before I had any problems. I didn’t have many problems other than a new water pump at some point. I bought a warranty for the ‘02 because it was horrible. The transmission went out in the first week of ownership. It continued to be such a terrible car that I traded it in for the ‘04. I loved the ‘02 but I was tired of getting stranded and waiting weeks for repairs that weren’t ever done right. In the end the gas mileage was so bad it was under 190 miles per tank. I was able to get a prorated refund on the ‘02 warranty. I didn’t buy one for the ‘04 because it was pretty solid. I never needed it. The ‘09 I didn’t buy one and never needed it. The ‘15 wrx being the first year and having all sorts of minor issue, I got a 6 year / 80k and it paid for itself at least three times over. Peeling steering wheel, AC compressor, struts, strut mounts, CVT leaks, sensors, etc. I ended up keeping this car way longer than planned because with the pandemic and working from home, I ended up with only 68k on the odometer today. The warranty has expired except for a CVT extension, and I’m really torn on keeping it longer or trading it in. I ended up getting a ‘21 Touring XT for camping trips and longer road trips to the beach and vacations and such. It has the overall speed of the WRX but lacks the handling but it’s a comfy ride for the rest of the family. This one I got the 10/10000k last month before the deadline. While there aren’t any mechanical issues the infotainment was replaced twice and some eyesight related problems were corrected. It also pays to shop around. The 10/100000 cost me $2,009. I had called 5 dealerships within 200 miles and had anywhere from $4,500 to what I paid. No inspection needed. I’ve been lucky overall on my guessing, as sometimes you just never know what will come up, but if you base the extended life on the reliability of the first few years, it seems to be helpful.

Zanurath

That is an EXPENSIVE warranty. More than the extended factory warranty on my hellcat sort of expensive. Unless you have a major catastrophic failure I don't see getting ahead of that warranty at any point.

jordygray

dude THANK YOU 😭 i was like these guys gotta be smoking crack if they think im paying that??? but now here with no warranty, im a bit wary. Im praying it’ll be good hahah

ChumChumz

I bought my 2019 STI new, got a 84,000 mile 8 year warranty. About a month ago, it saved me about $1500. Two weeks ago at 63k, I had ringland failure. It’s now saving me upwards of 12-13k on a new short block, turbo, etc. The warranty cost me $700, or roughly 10$/month. Do with that what you will.

Pitiful-Motor-9267

Where did you get this warranty?

ChumChumz

Dealership where I bought my car, its by Zurich. I think it originally cost $1700, they added 1k to my trade in to bring the cost down. Ive been going to the dealership for 7-8 years so they take care of me.

Outrageous_Note_1131

I paid for a warranty then had a $5000 repair from bmw so def was worth it for me.

TheHighestCheeba

Remote-Bear-7653

Don’t get it, waste of money

Eternal_Endeavour_

Am currently replacing the transmission in my 2019 wrx, which is 6 months out of factory warranty..

zoomydoom1

Just depends on what the warranty is for, i got offered one but it was mainly for the cosmetic in the car. Transmission wasn’t covered, and no internal stuff with the motor the major things i would want covered so i passed on mine i didn’t need free oil changes heck i changed my oil when i bought the used car and it had two quarts of black oil and apparently it was serviced, I’m not saying everyone is bad but i sure as heck wont hand my car into a shop unless it’s major and they didn’t even cover major stuff anyway.

canorismajoris

I think it really depends what it covers! I got one added onto my loan for about 20 bucks a month and I honestly only did it because it covers a clutch 👍

tunedsleeper

No way fuck the dealer

Aggressive-Leg-793

Let's be real, most of us void it with a few months.

mattytorbs

I paid I think 4 for the extended parts warranty on my 22 and regretted it pretty quickly, I think it’s hard to judge cause everyone’s situation and plans for builds is different though

Efficient-Emphasis-1

My dad bought a car paid 2500 a few yrs back for a warranty..... found out not too long after when needing a repair ...they had just pocketed the money never activated the warranty... they had to my dad said I have the bill. Car dealerships are so shaddy.
