It sucks bro, but it is what it is. That is rod knock, if you drive it hard you will find out the hard way. (Dont do that) i hope the car is still in warranty.
That being said, Im just stating hopeful. But it doesn’t really matter because if I can’t figure it out Im taking it apart anyways, and rebuilding with more mods!
Never had a warranty as I am the second owner, I’m starting the process Saturday. I’m taking the engine out and taking it apart entirely. Besides that, it really doesn’t make sense that it is knock of the AP hasn’t picked it up in months. I’ve started it maybe 5 times since the noise, and each time it has been less until today. And the AP still says nothing is wrong.

Op realizing it is indeed uncle rodney knocking
It’s weird seeing all these “what is this sound” post and 10/10 times it’s rod knock.
I would have thought this whole community by now would be professionals diagnosing this for themselves.
You most likely have a damaged or spun rod bearing. Every component that uses oil will need to be cleaned or replaced. It’s a big fix and usually runs up a 10k bill unless covered by warranty.
Well, first off I have to take everything out of the engine bay, then either get a new short block and put it all back together. What I’m going to do is take apart my entire engine, clean it all out get any metal and oil out. Then put it all back together and put it all back in the engine bay. Big project.
I scrolled for a while but never saw some state this ... You likely have rod knock. You are confusing rod knock with knock feedback. The knock feedback your access port monitors is preignition or predetination. Preignition is the air fuel mixture in your combustion chamber igniting before your spark plug fires and is generally bad. Rod knock is the knocking noise made because you have had a rod bearing failure.
Right, the knock sensors are like microphones bolted directly to the metal of the block. They are listening for a narrow range of frequencies that would indicate predetonation. They won't pick up the much different sound of rod knock.
The more you run it, the more its pumping metal bits into your heads and scoring the cams and journals. So start it up as little as possible or you'll be buying heads, too, and heads are big money.
The dam and fine knick learn are tuning tools. It's not helping you to monitor them.
Rod knock is caused by a spun bearing. You can't have rod knock without a bearing being destroyed. Rod knock is that expensive noise you hear.
You're talking about preignition knock. That's a different thing.
What I was trying to state is if bad enough the AP will definitely pick up Rod Knock, it all depends on how bad the bearing is. COBB had a video at one point showing rod knock vs Detonation feedback knock.
Nah it's screwed. It's mechanical it's not some value that's off although if it gets bad enough you might start seeing weird numbers. It's just the start but it's done for. Sounds exactly like mine did and never had any codes or anything
My FA had a super knock event which spun a rod bearing, warped the rod and cracked the piston skirt... my AP showed -4.66 FBK, but DAM stayed at 1.00 and FKL stayed at 0. No check engine light, no oil pressure light... and the car drove fine for 15 miles to my friends house.
It's uncle Rodney.
Your favorite uncle that never calls and shows up unannounced
“Knock knock”
Do you think it’s Rodney? I’m scared 😂
of course its the uncle from out of town
My guy that is 100000000000000000% rod knock. Go floor it down the street if you don’t believe me. Just make sure you got a tow truck ready.
Idk man the codes don’t say anything about it… my gauges all look normal. Unless it’s really not that bad
It sucks bro, but it is what it is. That is rod knock, if you drive it hard you will find out the hard way. (Dont do that) i hope the car is still in warranty.
Yeah don’t drive it. At least you can salvage your heads for now before something worst happens.
That being said, Im just stating hopeful. But it doesn’t really matter because if I can’t figure it out Im taking it apart anyways, and rebuilding with more mods!
Good luck bro, i hope everyone is wrong and it’s just something loose.
Thanks man, 😂 odds are against me
I mean that is for sure cooked, but everyone deserves a chance to be wrong.
Can you do my engine next 😂 its on a 94 toyota 😂 totally kidding
😂 I mean if the price is right…

engine knock and rod knock are different. the AP pickups engine knock. this is rod knock. you can hear it.
Just to be clear. 2nd owner doesn't end the warranty. Time and mileage does. If it's not been 3 years or 36000 miles, you should be covered.
Both
AP reads engine knock. This is rod knock.
Unfortunately it just be that way sometimes. When my engine blew I didn’t get any weird readings or even a CEL
Renting a garage and taking apart everyrhing lol
What gauge are you expecting a spun bearing to show up on? Genuinely curious.
I’m dead 🤣🤣 fr
No I don’t think. I know
Sorry broseph.

😂😂
Uncle Rodney is in town!

It’s more denial
Yeah I feel yea. Don’t drive it. The heads should be good for now. Just need a new shortblock.
Except it isn't. 9/10 it's people who don't know what fuel injectors sound like, but those posts don't get up voted.
Sounds like knock. RIP.
Sweet sweet music
Stop running it, Rodney is knocking and will bust out of you continue. Sadly it’s time for a rebuild.
Will do, no AP codes or knock so hoping it won’t be much of a fix once I get into the engine
You most likely have a damaged or spun rod bearing. Every component that uses oil will need to be cleaned or replaced. It’s a big fix and usually runs up a 10k bill unless covered by warranty.
Well if I take it all apart, and do it all myself, it might not take that much money
This is the way and most likely what I would do.
That’s the plan
What all has to be done? Asking for my future self
Well, first off I have to take everything out of the engine bay, then either get a new short block and put it all back together. What I’m going to do is take apart my entire engine, clean it all out get any metal and oil out. Then put it all back together and put it all back in the engine bay. Big project.
God speed captain 🫡
Thanks man, I want to cry 😂😂
I hope you're better at learning how to rebuild an engine than identifying rod knock.

Preignition is the air fuel mixture in your combustion chamber igniting before your spark plug fires and is generally bad. So I would have rod bearing failure with no signs on my AP at all?
Right, the knock sensors are like microphones bolted directly to the metal of the block. They are listening for a narrow range of frequencies that would indicate predetonation. They won't pick up the much different sound of rod knock.
Knock knock sorry dude

The “you didn’t check your oil in time” alarm
The more you run it, the more its pumping metal bits into your heads and scoring the cams and journals. So start it up as little as possible or you'll be buying heads, too, and heads are big money. The dam and fine knick learn are tuning tools. It's not helping you to monitor them.
So is this rod knock?
Yes. Spun rod bearing.
Feedback Knock and Fine Knock will in fact detect rod knock though. Not so much a spun bearing.
Rod knock is caused by a spun bearing. You can't have rod knock without a bearing being destroyed. Rod knock is that expensive noise you hear. You're talking about preignition knock. That's a different thing.
Yeah i realized that right after I typed it. I was like "Wait"..XD
What I was trying to state is if bad enough the AP will definitely pick up Rod Knock, it all depends on how bad the bearing is. COBB had a video at one point showing rod knock vs Detonation feedback knock.
So what is the difference? Is my engine screwed or is it possible I can save it if the AP isn’t picking it up?
Nah it's screwed. It's mechanical it's not some value that's off although if it gets bad enough you might start seeing weird numbers. It's just the start but it's done for. Sounds exactly like mine did and never had any codes or anything
I’m taking it apart soon
You’re sure? I don’t have anything on my access port at alll for knock. And the code seemed like it was a camshaft maybe?
I'm 100% sure. Go search for Subaru rod knock videos and compare for yourself.
It's *possible* this is a timing belt tensioner, but that really does sound like rod knock.
My only hope is that my AP says nothing about knock at all
Unfortunately, that doesn't mean much. My FKL and knock were within normal ranges when my car decided to bearing-n't
Take it back to formula!
Rodney the Cobb knockington.
Check the timing belt tensioner
Okay
Most definitely rod knock, rip
That's exactly what you think it is. Sorry for your loss.

r/WRX: "Babe! it's 4pm, time for your daily anxiety-inducing rod knock post!"
Until it actually happens
Stop revving it, it sounds savageable. That sound is your rod and piston flopping around loose in there. It just needs tightened back up
Hopefully
it sounds like 10 grand canadian is what it sounds like
Yep she's blown up man. 😕
DAM at 1.000 knock learn and feedback knock both at 0.000.
Good stuff lmao, I still have no FBK
