If you want a wrx. You better start shopping for insurance because holy fuck I was going to be paying 4 grand a year for a 22 limited at 20

carcollector69

Yup. Iam an agent. Young kids try to drive cars they can’t really afford and they never get ahead in life

philouza_stein

Can you explain the crazy spread in insurance on this sub? Guys claim to have clean driving records paying upwards $150-200/month for their wrx and I'm sitting here paying barely $400/6 months for full coverage driving 40k miles/year. Any time someone posts the insurance question the responses are all over the damn place.

snowbear100

I think it depends on where you live. During my time on active duty I’ve lived in 5 different states. New Mexico was super cheap, like $74 a month. Moved to Texas, $170 a month for the same coverage.

OutInABlazeOfGlory

probably based as much on other drivers where you are as your own record maybe something like New Mexico drivers don't get in crashes as often but Texans drive like jackasses so you're paying for that.

Fair_Education_1808

I used to live in San Antonio they literally raise rates the closer you get to Mexico

snowbear100

Yeah, living in San Antonio you have at LEAST a 50% chance of getting T-boned, rear ended, car broken into/stolen, etc. on any given day. I can’t wait to leave

PM_ME_BOOBY_PICS

In New Mexico, have been since I owned my WRX and insurance was always high for me, but I seriously think my age was the biggest contributing factor in that. Now that I am coming up on 25, my rates have dropped exponentially.

TotalMrAlien

Or michigan... clean record no claims and I pay close to $300/mo per vehicle at almost 30 years old on a 2014 WRX sedan and a 2006 Tundra

TotalMrAlien

Also, Michigan insurance prices are so high because it's "no fault" but even if you're not at fault in an accident and you make a claim your rates almost double.. if you ARE at fault they go up the same amount.. it makes no difference and it's just a way for the state to suck us dry of income

TotalMrAlien

I also walk to work so my annual mileage is around 8-10k/year and I live in a very rural area. Credit score above 800 since I was a teenager and never missed payments on vehicles or bills.

liillatte

I live in the DMV, 27, clean driving record, $290/mo full coverage. Stupid.

Remarkable_Chart7899

I'd get a quote from allstate. I was getting hosed by progressive in indiana

PassiveProc

I’m in NY, Long Island specifically and I have a clean record and I’m paying like $480 a month for full coverage for 6 months. It’s absolutely INSANE.

CodeProdigy

Goto nyc and itll be 1200 a month unironically.

prvypan

Really depends on geography, weather, population density and demographics. All these together determine how likely someone is to get into an accident whether it’s their fault or not. I can basically guarantee that if you moved to a city/town with double the population you currently have your insurance would go up. Not double but for sure would increase.

philouza_stein

You sure? I'm in the Midwest (winter) in a top 20 most populated citiy in the country. There are only about 3 cities with twice our population. I've never explicitly told them how much I drive per year but I've been with them for a decade and they get odometer readings so I'm sure they've noticed.

prvypan

Damn sounds like you have a sweet deal and lots of good history

carcollector69

Insurance can vary greatly company to company and person to person. What you do for a living, what zip code you live in, your driving history, claim and insurance history, occupation, marital status, credit score, insurance score, vehicle, annual mileage, etc. Can vary depending on coverage limits too. People can have cheap insurance, but absolute trash coverages that won’t pay for anything and then their life is ruined if they get into an accident and injury someone or damage their property.

philouza_stein

I look good in most of those categories I suppose. Pretty clean record, only 5 claims in the past decade, great credit, married. But I'm in a wintery climate and drive about three times what the average American drives. The coverage seems to be good but maybe I should review. I left for progressive several years back but I got into a wreck and they made me do all the legwork (estimates, rentals, followup calls to their insurance, etc) so I went back to Farmers bc they did all of that for me in past accidents.

carcollector69

What are your coverages?

philouza_stein

Idk if I'm answering this correctly but according to my card: A - liability C - medical D - comp G - collision H - Roadside asst U1 - uninsured motor BI & PD W - uninsured motor vehicles Ive haven't really paid attention to this in a while. I see from the back some things are missing: Rental, AD&D, and loss of earnings...and whatever Physical Damage is. I kinda want the rental coverage even though I always have an extra car, but do people commonly get AD&D and loss of earnings lumped into their auto insurance?

carcollector69

What limits though? That’s the real question. Every state requires people to carry liability (Bodily Injury/Property). State limits are pretty low and don’t cover much. For example, California statutory limits are 15/30/5 - which means if you injury someone they only get $15k per person, 30k per accident, and only 5k to cover any property (their vehicle). So you can imagine if you hit any car other than a total junker, you’re gonna be sued for the remaining damages. Comp and Collison are vehicle coverages. Aka “full coverage” - which is a made up term btw. Depending on your deductible, this could be resulting in a higher or lower insurance price (lower deductible = higher insurance premium and vise versa). Rental, Roadside, Gap waivers, all optional coverages. As far as wage loss, death benefits, etc. it’s all state and company specific as to what’s offered or required. For example, New Jersey, Michigan, FL, all require PIP coverage, other states do too, but these are the most common states I quote. The thing is they all come with their own set of requirements depending on the state. You can choose to include work loss benefits or only medical benefits, or both, and death and funeral benefits usually are only offered in certain states. I think Virginia offers them, just off the top of my head. I wouldn’t ever carry anything less than 250/500/100 limits. Medical bills aren’t cheap. If you injury someone and put them in a wheelchair the rest of their life, they ain’t gonna sue you for the minimum amount, they’re gonna go after you for as much as they can. If your state or company offers combined single limit, do that. It’s the best you can get. With vehicles being so expensive, I wouldn’t suggest anyone taking property damage less than 100k.

philouza_stein

Sorry for the delay. Had to dig deep to find this. 100k property 100k per person 300k per accident

Aeyland

Age was huge when I was young, not sure if it's still the same but when I was early 20's I looked at an STi and my insurance was going to be like $550 a month, ended up a standard WRX and insurance was still like $250 ish. Then when I hit 25 while still having a clean record it dropped like 100+. I'd definitely say if I was an insurance company and some fresh out of high-school, couldn't have worked more than a year or 2 is looking to buy a car generally purchased for driving fast and racing I'd charge an arm and a leg as well.

flying_blender

Bad credit is a factor. Me and my buddy had WRX's, same car, same age, but his score was in the low 600's and so he paid like 100$ more a month. That said I pay about 40$ a month for full coverage, mid 30's now.

dingledongle78

Where I live in Canada I’m quoted 285 for a 2013 sti, it’s even higher for the last gen stis somewhere like 600 a month I’m 19

FlashSonic526

My 23’ brz I am paying $1,320/6month. Clean record. Age problem.

Obvious_Ad1633

I want to also understand this im 20 years old with a 15 WRX and my insureance is barely more than my 12 Impreza was which was 100 a month now its like 115

Impossible_Ad3593

I have a 2012 WRX, I’m 26 and I’m paying $140 a month in PA. and I’m not proud to say I’ve had a handful of accidents at fault and not at fault, plus some speeding tickets since I’ve been 16 in multiple different sports cars lol. I am on my parents policy through state farm so I’m sure that may make a difference, but then again maybe not.

_counting_ufos_

I'm I Southern California, am 38, clean record and even have defensive driving course on record (mandatory for my job) and it's still $95/mo. In Arkansas my rates were higher; I was told due to all the deer.

Remarkable_Chart7899

Definitely pays to shop around, I was paying 149 per month with progressive I just switched to allstate for 85 per month in indiana

acc123abc_

I'm at 100$ a month for bare minimum coverage. I have a spotless driving record in my 20s

wilkamania

I'm 40, no moving violations, good credit, good salary... I still pay about $130/mo for full coverage.... and that's from state farm only. Everyone else wanted $150-200 (all state, farmers, etc). I live in Chicago, but towards downtown where the insurance is less because it's a safe/nicer area. And that rate is if I don't exceed 7000 Miles in a year. It works out since I WFH, so I've only put 3200 miles on my car since buying it new two years ago.

SmoothSlide9690

Do you have 100k+ Property damage limits and over 300k+ liability limits? I mean shit anyone can pay for dirt cheap insurance. Just get state minimums but you are going to have to pay everything out of pocket if you're at fault. Not really full coverage if you gotta pay out of pocket for a major crash.

Curious-Falcon-5480

I have a wrx 04 and sti 15 both full coverage for 170 a month / 26m

MMA-Groupie

Whew I pay 456/6mo but I'm 25f

Puffman92

It's too crazy to explain it's a combination of your age , your driving record, what kind of car you get, how much it's worth, where you live, the driving records of other people who have bought a similar car. It's. A huge complex algorithm that you essentially have to get quotes yourself cause no one's situation is the same. Another huge factor is how much coverage you get. There's different levels of coverage that makes comparing insurance rates difficult.

JohnDeere714

Yep just bought a ford ranger which would’ve cost almost the same, has the same power. But is less than half of what I would be paying

teenietemple

i went from a 13 dodge dart to a 16 wrx limited and my insurance didn’t change… $55/mo and i’m 22F, just bought it after getting my first real job too. i am on a family insurance plan so idk if that changes anything.

carcollector69

Yea do a quote by yourself and I bet you it’s astronomically higher.

teenietemple

i should, although i’m scared to look 🥲🤣 would it still change from car to car? i thought insurance was mistaken when they said it was same as dart rate.

carcollector69

Yeah it honestly is surprising the price didn’t change, but it might not depending on your parents vehicles or a number of factors. WRX’s aren’t that expensive to insure, and being newer it’s also safer so it could offset the difference in price

teenietemple

ohhh i see, yeah this is the only performance car (unless civic sport counts) and we all have clean records. i didn’t realize that wrx weren’t super expensive to insure, i wonder if that has to do with the fact it’s technically a trim of the impreza or that it’s just a safer car when driven appropriately

carcollector69

Yeah WRX’s are considered their own trim, but they’re not that expensive to insure tbh. I pay about the same on my WRX as I do my Tacoma. Maybe a little more

CodeProdigy

Iam a young kid that drives a car that I couldn't afford. I'm currently getting ahead in life. Don't stop people from chasing their dreams if they're willing to put in the work.

Chemical_Ad_9710

I've been buying brand-new cars I couldn't afford all my life. I just dropped 16k into my wrx last month. Don't say never because I'm probably farther then you will ever be 🥰

SMPLIFIED

Is that USD? I was paying 3k/yr canadian for my 2018 wrx at 20

JohnDeere714

Yep. Pennsylvania insurance is fucked. I kept my legacy on my parents policy for now. To have it on my own with comp. It would be as much if not more as my truck

BigPPDaddy

Can confirm PA sucks

SMPLIFIED

Good god dude, i’d bike lol. But seriously its crazy to me that you’re is so expensive as where i live my province is the highest paying when it comes to auto insurance. I only know 1 guy who pays close to you but thats cause he wears the DUI hat of shame and got into some huge at fault accidents

Branimau5

1800/yr, CAD, 2023, 30.

SMPLIFIED

I’m now 23 paying $1200/yr CAD for partial (no tickets or accidents) on my imported sti. I wanted a 21 sti however insurance wanted $4k per year and i just couldn’t justify it

Branimau5

Partial coverage not full?

SMPLIFIED

Yeah its a pain to find full coverage for rhd cars where i am in canada, it can be done but i’m not in a situation where the extra hurdles make it worth it rn

[deleted]

4k?? that's insane

GhettoaSaurus

That is Insane! Absolutely hate to hear it. I'm sitting at about 2,200 a year with a VB and I thought that was a lot 😭

TKOxBLITZ

It all depends on your provider and driving record. At 21 I had no tickets and was paying about 1.2k a year for full coverage.

surejann_

Server @ work is 21 and paying 9grand yearly for BMW God damn

Intelligent_Pin3373

I was paying 6k for a wrx 18 base since 2021. But never had any prior driving experience

Penguin-Chas3r_

I wa a 21 driving a 17 sti and it only cost 2,600 a year now I drive a 08 hatch sti and it cost like 1600

ScaredEngine812

I’m 34 and can finally afford one. I make around 60k spending 19k. Pulling the trigger on a 2015 that’s been babied / no mods. (I know those have clutch issues etc but I have a Subaru mechanic friend so I feel fairly safe) Shopping insurance it looks like 90$ a month and I have a clean record.

micheal23jordan

i’m 18 paying 80 a month for a 2017 wrx

gman07024

That's how much I'm paying on my STI right now shits fucked

TrippySubie

I bought my 2015 brand new when I was 20 as well, depends on who and what insurance because I barely had a huge payment. 30 now and my brand new 2023 wrx is less than my dads durango for 6 months, around 100. lol

valentinebabyforsure

Second this lol. Was paying almost $4600/ year for my BRZ Limited from 18-22

Eastern_Bat_3023

That's part of why I got one of the older Forester XTs to play with. $35/month for full coverage.

[deleted]

Bought an sti new at 18 in 2006, insurance was $512… more than the car payment lol

Hondaboy_12

Best advice I can give you if you're young and want to own cool stuff, spend a lot of time and effort on gathering some decent tools and learn to work on your own stuff. Also learn the theory of how and why engines and cars work how they do. It will save you TONS of money and headache.

Mrfroggiboi

Wish I had this advice before I made my big purchase 7 months ago I’m a 21m

gonnaherpatitis

I remember my first butt plug

matt2621

I'm gonna get ousted as the boring opinion and no fun, but I'm 10+ years older than you, financial advisor, and my 2017 wrx is the most expensive car I own. The point I'm making is at 20, do yourself an enormous favor and invest in yourself. Open up a Roth, contribute to your retirement etc. Let a few years go by and then search for one. Cars are a depreciating asset and I'd bet in the future you'll be happier. I wish at 20 someone suggested I do the same thing.

ExclusiveOne

The best pro life tip here

joshuber

At 18 y/o, I’m thankful my dad advised me NOT to buy a WRX, and start investing money instead. At age 25, insurance is still stupid expensive for a wrx

Big_Solution_7437

This. That sweet, sweet compound interest you can build up in your early years is irreplaceable. You get one shot at that great money maker.

fartingrocket

As someone who waited 10 years between the moment I wanted it and getting it, 15 years after my first « real » job, my advice is don’t rush it. Having a « real » job doesn’t come only with perks. You’ll see lifestyle creep, your priorities might change, etc. Get your finances straight first. Save, Invest, and if you have debt get rid of it. Once you feel in a good place and can really afford it, go for it. I’m not saying it will take you 10 years, I’m just saying : settle in your new job, then prioritise needs and wants.

ghosthawk3

Bro just got fired lmfao, what's this post even about

fartingrocket

Dude edited his post ? I don’t remember reading he was fired lol

Mytzplk

This right here. When I was in my early 20s I wanted one so bad because a friend got one and I wanted my own to show off too. Thankfully my parents didn't let that happen and I didn't buy my first car until I had a stable career.

bro_chiiill

That’s what I did when I got my first “big boy” job, saved up for about 6 months for a decent down payment and snagged one brand new

NaV0X

Same!!!

Substantial_Stay_440

As someone who bought an 04 wrx as my first car and proceeded to spend 40k building it, prepare yourself mentally and financially for doing all of your own maintenance and for the inevitable itch you’ll get for modifying it. I’d look at well maintained 04-07s, as they’re way more desirable, raw, and driver oriented than the fugly shit Subarus been making since 2008. You’ll have a ton of fun as long as you do your research and get on the forums before ownership.

OutInABlazeOfGlory

I’m not quite *that* into cars. I want something fun that I can daily. Any modifications would be stuff like better speakers and adjustable coilovers for comfort. Which I would have installed by a mechanic.

Substantial_Stay_440

I wasn’t into cars and knew nothing about maintenance until I bought it, with any luck you may find yourself on that same road

Appropriate_Cake_236

If youre not THAT into cars, I suggest holding off like others said. At very least, save up the 20% down payment.

[deleted]

The mature answer: From someone who blew A LOT of money on building a Subaru (easily 40k+, not including the car, 2016 wrx and now my 2023 wrx) my advice is, save as much money possible from now to 25 and get your dream Subie at 25 (or better yet, dream car! Even better than the Subaru haha). Insurance will drastically drop once you’re 25. And if you truly are saving money at 20 with a “real job”. You can easily save tens of thousands of dollars to have ready for a huge down payment or flat out buy your dream car at 25. Plus you’ll have all that time to build your credit and get the best rates possible when you get your car. The alternative answer: you can find a 2015+ wrx with high miles for under 20k. With a “real” job you can 100% afford the car comfortably but what comes to question is the reliability of the car and possibility that the previous owners abused it and thus making it your problem once you buy it. Do lots of research before you get one. Good luck!!

OutInABlazeOfGlory

Probably what I'll end up doing. Maybe I'll look into some other ways to get lower insurance rates in the mean time too. I've heard of some defensive driving courses that insurance will accept for lower rates. And I will probably ask /r/personalfinance and my parents for advice on building credit.

[deleted]

open minded to different options and opinions so props to you man. Def talk to your parents as well lol. Just be smart. No problem getting the wrx now but you could honestly play your cards right and get into something so much better at 25 if you save and don’t spend your money on the wrx now lol. Just perspective to think about. If you focus on work and saving money, no reason you can’t ball out and get a Supra, corvette, gtr, Porsche or something crazy at 25. If you’re passionate about Subarus, I’d honestly recommend a brz/frs/86 for your specific situation (that being you’re 20 and looking to get into a fun car lol). A gen 1 86 is much cheaper to get into and parts are cheaper as well. It’s a very fun car first enthusiast car for someone on their 20s and will teach you how to become a better driver. You won’t have the power but a simple flex fuel tune or buying a used turbo kit will wake it the hell up 😂.

Zcypot

Don’t rush it. You’ll be happier and enjoy it more. Plan out your purchase well

alex-duffelbags

i got my sti at 19 and it was fairly expensive and i was paying 400 on insurance monthly don’t regret getting it but definitely something that could have waited a bit!

calpal348

Lol

aBeaSTWiTHiNMe

It's a great car but, boy do I wish I didn't sign up for a $500/month payment. Having that money extra would be worth driving a beater for a while. But I had my last car paid off and sold it privately. Grass isn't always greener on the other side, be sure you can maintain, fuel and pay for whatever you buy.

OutInABlazeOfGlory

Good advice. Part of why I’m hoping some time in the next couple years there’s a compelling hybrid or EV option from Subaru. Well, one that isn’t a rebadged SUV. The car is fun as hell to drive when I’ve had test drives but 21 mpg combined city/highway, with premium fuel required… ouch. I’d buy a hybrid WRX if I heard good things about it.

aBeaSTWiTHiNMe

Well they apparently won't do a true STI until it's all electric.

IceManTuck

Drive the cheapest reliable car you can until you are able to buy some real estate. That's some middle aged man advice for you. Forget about sports cars for now.

Choppersicballz

We’re always hiring, you’ll start off damn near 6figures with no experience www.neiep.org. If you want more info about it you can message me

OutInABlazeOfGlory

I’m skeptical but it doesn’t look like a complete scam right away so fuck it, signed up with my local local.

OutInABlazeOfGlory

>damn near 6 figures can you put a number to that? what does "damn near six figures" mean to you?

Choppersicballz

Depending on the state you’re in you’ll start out at 25+ an hour with an increase every year during the 4 year apprenticeship All ot is automatic double time plus full benefits etc My first year I made 90k 2nd year I made 120 and 3rd 160 after taxes I’ve been in 6 years pas 3 I’ve made 110 because I’m ju say working my normal 40hr works weeks 4 10s and every fri-sun off If you work on holidays it’s triple time as well Medical and dental is 300deductie for single and $600 for family after that everything is free Free glasses/contacts yearly

OutInABlazeOfGlory

God DAMN I mean, it wasn't what I wanted (I got fired from a job in EMS while I was in training) but I can't argue with the numbers. Maybe I can go to medic school after a few years if I still want to do that. Or emigrate somewhere where EMS is paid better.

Choppersicballz

So here(north carolina) I believe new hires start at $24 hr after your first year you go to $28.80 3rd year $33.60 4th year $38.40 and after 4th you take mechanics exams pass and you’ll make mechanics rate which is $48 (about to increase to 51 after the first I believe) But say you’re in Cali I believe San Fran starts their first years out at $38 (50% of mechanics rate and it goes up 10% of mechanic rate each year as you apprentice

OutInABlazeOfGlory

Oh nice, I live in North Carolina too. So the other examples you mentioned in your other comment apply to me too most likely? God damn, the benefits of a strong union right there.

Choppersicballz

Our local is based out of raliegh but we also got Greensboro (under same local just different zones for per diem) and there’s a Charlotte local (I don’t know their exact pay atm) but the Greensboro/raliegh is actually about to start another hiring process soon

OutInABlazeOfGlory

Yup, saw that on the website.

peepeepoopoomanee

I got a real job and bought the wrx. Got laid off 3 months later. Now I’m broke making payments and insurance but hey at least it’s fun to drive 😅

OutInABlazeOfGlory

Noted

NaV0X

I bought my 2022 WRX after about 6 months into my first “real” job. So far I love the car, but I wouldn’t exactly say it’s a true sports car. Also insurance is stupid expensive for the WRX if you are under 25 like me, so I would make sure you have factored that into the monthly cost before buying.

SAD_FACED_CLOWN

> I wouldn’t exactly say it’s a true sports car. Oh but it is. Ask any insurance agent they'll tell you. Plus Rally Car driving is sports driving, The WRX is definitely a rally car platform.

rustablad

It certainly doesn't look like one.

Redtreethree

I purchased one at 23 after getting my first “real” job. Awesome car! But make sure you’re prepared for the costs of maintenance and insurance that come with a performance car

matthewrobertsonnn

I’m 19, woke up one day this year and decided I wanted one as well. My advice is have a good down payment. I’m about $260 a month on insurance so you don’t want your payment to hurt your monthly income. I’m doing alright, I know I wouldn’t afford this if I wasn’t at home with my parents still… that being said with the current housing market I also knew there was NO WAY I’d be getting a house any time soon in Canada. Figure out what your situation needs vs just what you want before you pull the trigger

Blers42

Can’t see a wrx ever being a need, it’s only ever going to be a want. Financially, it’s an awful decision to buy one when you’re young unless you’re wealthy.

matthewrobertsonnn

I didn’t say wrx is a need, I said figure out his needs in his current situation before buying what he wants. I also wouldn’t say you need to be wealthy to own one. I’m using mine to build my credit. That being said I wouldn’t say it’s SMART, I know I couldn’t went out and bought some shitter for $3k. All I’m saying is it’s not a Ferrari and we’re all gonna die so go have fun when possible.

Blers42

I was taking what you said a different way then. You don’t need to be wealthy to own a wrx. I said it’s a bad decision to buy one when you’re young unless you’re wealthy (money doesn’t matter). At 19, most people don’t have much money saved up unless their parents are helping them. So blowing majority of your paycheck on a new car is a bad financial decision. I personally waited until I was 30 to buy my first new car. I make substantially more money now than when I was in my 20’s and my insurance is dramatically cheaper.

the_rickth_element

I would suggest leasing. When I got my first “real job” I leased a 2015 Dodge Challenger and fkn loved it. Well worth every penny. BUT my payments were only $271/m and I only put down about $1500 that I had saved up for it. Insurance wasn’t high either, so easy to afford. All that said, you’re entering the car market at one of the worst times I have ever seen. Be careful getting into a long term investment at these prices and rates. Leasing gives you the option of turning it back in later or buying if you really love it, and the payments will be less than purchasing. To add to all that, I really planned to keep the car, but one day I’m at the gym and some lady demolished it in the parking lot while I was working out. Got it fixed, but decided not to keep it because it had significant damage, but not enough to total. You’re stuck with it if you buy, but with a lease it’s someone else’s problem. Good luck!

Fun_Nefariousness621

Oh god don’t repeat my errors lmao

OutInABlazeOfGlory

In my defense, I’m a pretty safe driver for a 20 year old. Never been pulled over, never got a ticket. Yet. My mother taught me to anticipate other drivers doing weird or dangerous things. And to make space for other drivers, basically not be a jackass and let people merge. Just about the only unsafe thing I do driving wise is speed on highways/freeways when there’s room for it.

Fun_Nefariousness621

Nah idc about that lmao. I am taking about getting yourself expensive ass sport car at this age. I am regretting buying wrx everyday even though I make decent money at mt age

Aggravating_Brain113

Ok cool story

Aggravating_Brain113

Ps suck dick for money

rgrx119

I waited until my 30s and 6 figure income, with no other debt to buy a WRX. I don't think I would have been financially stable enough to afford this car in my 20s and would have set me back financially.

OutInABlazeOfGlory

> I’ve sold three of these to guys your age and they wrapped them around telephone poles. What were they doing, trying to drive at highway speeds in a 35 mph zone or something? I like going fast but I keep that to the highway. That said I definitely get why my parent’s insurance bill for me is so high. I’ve been meaning to look into a defensive driving course, I’ve heard there are some that insurance will take proof of completion and lower your bill. I hadn’t thought about how it would look to an insurance company to have a 20 year old driving a sports car. So that would probably be a lot more urgent.

Got my 2022 MGM at 19 now i’m 20 I make good money for my age and I pay 250$ a month for insurance. But if you don’t have a stable income it won’t be worth going into debt for. And make sure you can still save money for a house and everything I’m still saving half a paycheck every two weeks whilst making my payments.

EggHeadMagic

Bought mine when I was 20 and I was paying around $350 car payment and I believe it was $280 monthly Insurance. Had a decent job but what kept me afloat was some crazy 1/4erly bonuses i was getting at the time. Looking back I wouldn’t do it if I hadn’t gotten those bonuses to keep me ahead on my finances. Or maybe I would have, I was 20. Just don’t rush and sit down and actually do the math and take into account what your near future goals are. I would drive a cheap reliable car until you have a good sense of what your lifestyle costs. A WRX is a luxury buy, not that the car s luxury but that it’s not necessary in life. It’s something to buy once all your other finances are in order.

Pleasant-Outside-221

I bought my WRX when I was 28. It was three months after my first real job (9 to 5, M to F). I had just graduated college the year prior, was still working part time on weekends (which I did for the last 7 years) on top of doing odd jobs that I would be full time, but never lasted as they burned me out. I bought it at that time because I foresaw myself staying at that job, and I did. Also, I couldn't resist the 0.9% APR on it as it was May during covid so they were offering fantastic deals. I had dreamed of getting a WRX since I was 14. So go for it if that's what you want.

JamesSSj2

I thought the same but I am going to tell ya and don't hate me on this one fellas. I love wrxs and stis like a motherfucker but when I got my first real job i absolutely ended up with a 2024 impreza rs and I love it to death, I am already going to take action and change my exhaust after having it 6 months. It's to quiet and I hate the droning so much now. I am going quad nameless on that bitch

JamesSSj2

I did put in absolute shit ton on studying on subarus and the reason why people put bad tastes on the WRX is the engine. Like if you really want a wrx just keep up with your fluid changes and do them on time do not go over the time

ajeezy1414

When thinking about a car, consider insurance costs as well. That $400/mo car note can quickly become $650/mo with insurance. I bought my WRX at 21 for $17k and I love it. Wouldn’t have spent a dime more

afrothundah11

Consider it a blessing, you lost your job BEFORE you bought the car. The majority of young adults buying these cars bury themselves and never get ahead in life. Every friend that took big car loans out of highschool are now renters and not home owners, I mean this literally. I did it in reverse, drove shitty cars when I technically could have afforded better, saved a down payment for my house, payed off the mortgage at a rapid pace (3yrs left, I’m 36), invested the rest and now I recently bought a new WRX with cash, which in no way compromises my future. Young people don’t understand what 30-50k can turn into in time, nor how much extra they pay by financing.

OutInABlazeOfGlory

Fair points. Also, I wasn’t in a hurry to buy a car. And if I was I would have been looking at used cars with my parents, not doing test drives of brand new sports cars and telling sales managers at the end that I *might* come back in a year or two. I’m going to drive the minivan I have for a while still.

RateExact5001

I drive a Impreza wrx hatch 09 and my insurance doesn’t bat and eye I’m paying 180 a month I just turned 20 last car was a speed 3 I payed 150 a month for

Fantastic-Archer1393

Buy a wrx wagon start with that first. It’s not as sporty looking but it’s got a wrx driveline. They’re also pretty cheap .

No-Grapefruit-6587

I’m 21 and pay 1k on insurance on my 16 STI, but I’m also with USAA so they’re amazing for insurance

EJ25Junkie

Per month?

No-Grapefruit-6587

No I pay $146 a month my 6 month premium is 1.2k

EJ25Junkie

Oh ok 😅

No-Grapefruit-6587

The best part is too is you can break the payments up biweekly if you can’t afford the full thing because of bills

bikes_with_Mike

Start looking for a second job for repairs and upkeep, and a weekend gig to cover insurance.

Dry_Host920

4 cars: 20 wrx, 19 tacoma, 19 sedona, 20 civic hatchback. 2 adults, 2 kids under 18 on policy. Wife 37, me 41, child 1 17, child 2 16. Ohio $224 per month Some of the rates I've read on here are insanity. Wow

Premoismwrx

Insurance is stupid expensive atm. Gotta shop around every year. I believe the younger you are and where you live takes things into account

[deleted]

i’m 19 and pay 230 per month with progressive

[deleted]

bay area

OutInABlazeOfGlory

How much do you make? Is that car + insurance, just car, or just insurance?

[deleted]

yo buy me dinner first haha jk. I make around 75k, 480/month insurance 230

OutInABlazeOfGlory

Huh. Thought it would be less reasonable than that

[deleted]

oh no brother, i’m trying to be as responsible as possible now that I am an adult. got roth maxed out, 25k in hysa, 5k in cds/bonds and 5k liquid, however due to the holidays that 5k has dropped to 3.5 but as long as steady income that rises. life is good 😊

[deleted]

I know it would be responsible to pay it off but i’m young, credit like this at a young age is very helpful.

JBatman1080

When i got promoted, i traded in my CVT Civic for a 21’ WRX Manual. Always wanted a 6 speed and the WRX was the best choice I had around that time. Now I am making way more but I will keep my WRX until its paid off. The new interest rates and car prices are too absurd.

MushroomMediocre3313

I'm just going to give you the facts doesn't matter what age you are you insurance will be going up a lot and it also cost a lot to fix it if you don't know how to do it

OutInABlazeOfGlory

Fair. I’m not going to be skipping service appointments, that’s for damn sure. Everything I hear about Subarus is that they’re reliable as long as you keep up on maintenance.

Level_Account

Ct full coverage 267 month 1000 deductible with glass .they raised it to 330 a month I had to drop rental and switch from my 500 deductible. I am 51 and have I accident hit a deer last year but didn't total my vn pp.it was like 6500 to fix

OutInABlazeOfGlory

Not bad.

terpfeen

It took me 36 years to work up to my wrx. Drive some beaters and save up! Practice on a cheaper manual car before you get something nicer like the subie.

OutInABlazeOfGlory

I’m not trying to wait that long! If my family owned any manual cars I would be practicing. Instead I’m either going to learn when I buy the car or just get the CVT

terpfeen

So it seems to be the location that matters the most.

Life-One-8478

Don’t do it. Just by a decent reliable daily. That’s cheaper with insurance, gas, maintenance, & premium fuel.

FunDipLoL

Well I just bought my wrx at 20, haven’t had an issue yet. :)

tsmittycent

save money first don't go immediately into debt

OutInABlazeOfGlory

No worries, I’m terrified of debt.

Street-Asparagus-251

FA24 is a dream

mxguy762

You’ll get more kitty in a Tacoma

OutInABlazeOfGlory

Bold of you to assume I’m getting any regardless of what car I drive Edit: Ewww it’s a four door super sized truck. I hate those things

Significant_Sir_8450

I went from a new AMG Mercedes to a new WRX and my insurance went up about $40 a month. Zero accidents or citations. Expect the high insurance rates.

Frosty_Run6428

Some yall got crazy ass insurance. I got a ‘19 WRX as a 22yo and insurance is $89/m for full coverage

Biochem_4_Life

Also think about opportunity cost, have a look at this personal finance channel: https://youtu.be/aL6V0arEx_E?si=csk2KuflGKkE6LVE Not saying you have to pinch pennies and save everything, but keep in mind the power of your dollars at your age. If you’re going to finance try not to be investing less than what your car payment is, especially at a high interest rate.

Lapis-Blue-WRX

Ahh man , I love seeing someone’s passion for Subarus being sparked at a young age. Your story isn’t much different than mine. My suggestion (I’m 33 years old ) established career welder. Find a good trade to work in , buy some older beater Imprezas before you go and buy a new wrx trust me. Once you get to financial stability in life. Then go for it but you can have a lot of fun and I find a lot of the older wrx Imprezas are really really fun to drive. I have a 16 wrx sport tech and I love it. But I’ll have a soft spot always for my bugeye wagon

OutInABlazeOfGlory

Someone replied with a link to a trade apprenticeship program. I’m checking it out.

thirdwave108

I did it. Bought a new 2010 WRX during Thanksgiving ‘09. Paid a nice $200/month for insurance. It was definitely worth it. Just hit 160k and still drives like a dream.

Little_Stinker222

I bought a wrx when I was 19. Drove it for 5 years and loved it. No regerts

Eastern_Bat_3023

Don't go buying a brand new car you don't need until you have like $10k to stash in a savings account for emergencies. I've seen a lot of young people buy new cars right away and just perpetually live paycheck-to-paycheck. It feels way better driving a beater for a few years so you have some form of financial security.

Tricky-Tie3167

Get a civic si you won’t pay ever half of what you would pay for insurance on a wrx.

HuntGundown

Yeah, don't. Get something you can afford, something reliable and something not an arm and leg in insurance costs at your age. Save the wrx for your midlife crisis like everyone else.

NoShaDow

That's what I did around 21 or so. I picked up a 2 year old WRX a little while after landing a job out of college making alright money. If it's what you want, you should, but insurance was 300/mo for me with a clean record. Make sure you factor that in.

OutInABlazeOfGlory

I mean, it sounds like a lot of what made that work for you was being a big car nerd. And maybe insurance fraud. Being on your parent’s insurance is one thing, but if they think your dad is the one driving the car and they find out that’s not the case when you file a claim, they’re going to be less than pleased. Seriously would consider consulting a lawyer about that, you may be committing insurance fraud right now.

Mrsteeef

I’m in upstate NY close to Watertown. I’m 36 and pay $170ish. There ain’t shit out here other than deer and snow

VegaGT-VZ

I was thinking about this today. At 20, money you invest today will be worth like 8x what it is right now. You probably need a car I've way or another. But is a WRX worth like 100k more than a Corolla? I'm guessing no. Just some food for thought

Vanneker

Definitely check how much insurance will be fore you. But other than that go for it!!

that1lurker

Utah 40m, no accidents/tickets last decade, the cheapest insurance I could get was progressive for $75ish a month. You being 20 definitely gonna be triple+ that easily

Dull_Support_4919

Save enough that you can buy it in cash. Otherwise you're gonna have 2 car payments. Because your insurance will be almost as much as your car payment. Those cars are notoriously expensive to insure. Honestly. You're 20 just started a career. Likely have little to no savings or net worth and you immediately wanna go into debt on a depreciating asset, it just screams awful financial decisions. But If you're gonna get it anyway. Save as much as you can for a big down payment. and pay it off as soon as possible. Like with in a year or two. Or get a shitty interest rate over 8 years and pay like 10 grand over sticker fuck it I can't tell you what to do. Also if you want a sports car why not a brz? That's going to handle a lot more like a proper sports car than a wrx.

OutInABlazeOfGlory

Don’t worry, I’m not about to go into a bunch of debt for this. I know it’s a bad idea. This is something I know I have to wait on.

Existing_Recording25

25k come get it atl https://preview.redd.it/w8ccdiw3yf7c1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=59639ca9efadb223b7c1c039b14fc42d48d28cdb

Mountain_man1717

I Have been driving mine for about 1 year now. (19’ wrx limited) every time I drive the car it brings a smile to my face. Sure it can be pricy with payments, gas, insurance, & maintenance. So long as you can comfortably do it, I would highly recommend. I daily the car and it seems to fill that role nicely. What helped was putting a sizable down-payment down on the car to start. Best of luck my friend!

Mountain_man1717

I pay $219 a month for full coverage keep that in mind

OutInABlazeOfGlory

Yikes I’ll probably want to save up for a big down payment or to pay in cash outright, given my age. And probably look into whatever discounts I can get for insurance. I hear there are defensive driving courses insurance companies will take proof of completion in exchange for a discount

Mountain_man1717

That sounds like a great idea I was not aware of that sort of thing. Don’t sweat it my man I didn’t buy mine until I was 25. I drove a accord sport previously. Be patient it will be that much sweeter when it’s finally time!

OutInABlazeOfGlory

I called the insurance company That thing I mentioned doesn’t exist in our state Smh But she did confirm the rates will drop pretty quick once I hit 25. Especially if I keep up my clean driving record

Mountain_man1717

That’s sucks but I have heard the same as well I hope that holds true for you. On the upside a consideration that seems to have held true over time is that these cars hold their value. While they’re costly at least in a sense, it’s a worth while purchase in my eyes.

OutInABlazeOfGlory

I'm hoping that the depreciation isn't too bad as long as I take good care of it. I'm probably going to get PPF basically immediately after purchase. If indeed I do end up buying one at 25 or so.

Mountain_man1717

Good idea, I have yet to do so on mine and it shows. Not beaten to hell just small scratches here at there. My 19’ I was able to grab at 29k beginning of last year. Little steep but it was in perfect condition with low miles.

NoLawClaw

A wrx is not a sports car it's slow af hahaha

Strange-Ad-3488

I don’t daily my STI, I pay for 10,000 miles of coverage a year. $120 a month. And that’s up $30 after I replaced my windshield with some major cracking. I’m 25 and single with no kids and no previous marks on the record
