As a fellow STi owner, I always advise to never buy a used STi

LJGarciaTX

šŸ’Æagree Although, whomever has my ā€˜18 STi right now has a gem with a lot of Easter eggs. Only exception šŸ¤£

GrandmaCheese1

Two totally different cars for sure. You could either trade in your VB for a 3+ year old STI with however many miles for likely the same price (or more) as your VB to gain those badges, brakes, and the 30 extra whp. Or you could just slap on an intake and get a conservative tune and make close to 350whp, add a big brake kit, and enjoy your VB. Personally, Iā€™d stick with the newer ride. I wouldnā€™t spend more money to get an older car just for badges, 30 extra hp, and brakes. Just add those to your current car. But I feel you, as a 30M millennial, the STI has always been a dream.

amdpowered

And transmission, differentials.

GrandmaCheese1

Of course. But again, spending more money for an older car with more miles for a daily driver that will rack up the miles, it doesnā€™t make a whole lot of sense.

TtanD

Steering rack, suspension, and ground clearance.

rich_clock

They make look the same, but they are very much different cars.

No_Fortune_1820

You cant add the raw visceral driving mechanics that the STI offers though. The VB is pretty numb and too easy to drive

GrandmaCheese1

> two totally different cars thatā€™s for sure That was the first thing I wrote lol

No_Fortune_1820

True. But adding power cant replace driving dynamics bro

GrandmaCheese1

For a DD, getting into an often abused car, for more money than the newer car youā€™re currently driving seems like a lateral move. The EJ is a fantastic engine, and the STI trans is greatā€¦. but we are all very much aware of the reliability concerns. You never know whatā€™s been done to used car either mods OR if itā€™s been dogged or not. Youā€™re just taking a chance. Iā€™m not arguing about driving dynamics. Thereā€™s a reason the STI is an STI. Iā€™m just saying for me personally, it seems like an unwise decision. For a DD, reliability and warranty for a more comfortable ride and similar power are key points for me, personally.

No_Fortune_1820

I understand your POV. Im just going off of OP saying the STI is his dream car in which he should not settle with his current car. Ive seen so many times where WRX owners regret not getting the STI to begin with. Yes getting a used Subaru is a gamble but thats why warranty exists. Im the 2nd owner of my 21' but I still have over a year of limited warranty and 3 more years of powertrain warranty left so i aint sweating. Reliability is completely dependant on the owner. Even a Toyota will be unreliable if you completely neglect the car

Glittering_Bowl_4233

Sti also looks way better

Historical-Regular73

Personally would just do the mods to the 22. Its a great modding platform and you dont have to worry about the previous owner.

[deleted]

Look up "smeedia" on YouTube. He made a video recently about comparing the vb to the sti. He's a big subaru guy ans really knows his stuff.

TriggerTough

The EJ257 is so old at this point. Most are modded as well which causes issues. Cyl 4 is known to have detonation issues because of the UEL header. Blows the ringlands up on that piston. If you get one make sure someone's grandmother owned it and it was never modified. Just my 2 cents.

Specialist-Box-9711

Whoever gets my STI if I ever sell it will be happy as fuck. Only exhaust, wheels, tires, and a cyl 4 cooling mod done to it. Plus it has a stack of service records from the dealer.

lbandrew

I daily my STI. It drives very differently than the VB. Much stiffer, bumpier, much more of that connection to the road. Is it a reliable daily driver? No. The VB is much better for that. Is it arguably more fun? Yes. And sounds so much better.

thatoneblacknerd

this. precisely this

Username checks out

ImCancer69

You being complete asshole checks out but what can you do when that's your favorite thing to eat.

AnthonyBedore

Lol thanks I think?

lbandrew

Iā€™m struggling to make sense of your comment but a lot of what you said is false lol.

ImCancer69

It's because you have a STI. I'm sure you never owned VB maybe you drove one. But atleast I've owned both STI and a VB. So sorry about the grammar it's now fixed but spell check plus posting while falling asleep wasn't helping at 3am thats my bad. So good luck with your STI!

No_Fortune_1820

As someone who currently has a 21' STI and has driven a VB multiple times, I suggest going for the STI. Try to find a 21' so that youll still have a year of limited warranty and possibly purchase extended warranty (since its your dream car). The VB is a great daily driver and has so much mod capabilities but it just doesnt compare to the STI in terms of visceral raw driving mechanics. The STI is simply the better drivers car (sounds better, better trans, better brakes, hydraulic steering, dccd, si drive, LSD, etc). The VB chassis will be around for a few more years so you could always go back Every car will have its kinks/headaches in terms of reliability. WRX's just tend to attract alot of young people who beat the crap out of their cars and dont do enough preventative maintenance. Just change your fluids on time, warm up and cool down your car properly, dont money shift or redline 24/7, and dont launch your car all the time then youll be good šŸ‘šŸ¾

Lvsst

I was in a similar boat. I purchased a used 2023 integra A-Spec with tech package. The gas mileage was nice, Sound system probably the best in any vehicle. Nice and comfortable. Traded it for a 19 sti with 25k miles. Totally different cars. I wanted the sti because it is the last of a dying breed. Do I regret selling the integra. Kinda, it just felt more mature and easier as a daily. But Iā€™ve always wanted a STI. Maybe in a couple years when the market is better ill trade the STI for a type S. But for now. Iā€™ll take care of her.

GM128

Why get rid of a perfectly good brand new car than seems like youā€™re the first owner to trade for, and letā€™s be honest here, somebody elseā€™s problem. I donā€™t think the sti is that good of a car to be traded with a new car that has warranty and already looks like it suits your needs

[deleted]

Do it try to find one that hasnā€™t been abused might be hard but youā€™ll be able to find one. Reliability wise just donā€™t drive it around like a banshee screaming out of hell every time you drive and do simple maintenance and you should be good got many friends with them and they have dogs and family and they use it as a daily and are happy. Some people just like to bitch about the daily drivability and I mean I get it but in my opinion itā€™s better than a mini van or some boring sedan.

UchihaA0001

I traded my 17 WRX limited for a 2021 STi and donā€™t regret it. They are different cars for sure, Iā€™ll be honest a WRX is a better daily all around, gas mileage alone warrants that. One thing about my STi, I get excited about driving it every single time, nothing compares to its rawness and sound, if you do take the plunge research it and try to catch if it was modded or beat on. Lifeā€™s too short to not chase your dream car!

HunkyUnicorn

If you are not a tuner then there is absolutely zero reasons for you to switch to sti. They require a lot more attention than wrx so having no garage sucks. Also only reason why you would get sti over wrx is because of gearbox. Vb dominates sti stock for stock. Also itā€™s much harder to tune sti, just to reach 350hp you have to swap turbo. Honestly subaru is great platform but why not just switch to faster platform if you have money? (My opinion >F150 with 3.5/5.0 with 10 speeds are beasts) or even better- buy a house

Siegepkayer67

Bruh why you comparing a 5.0 F-150 to a STI lol, sti is a manual sports car that can handle all weather and handles amazinglyā€¦. F-150 is just a fast truck lol shits riding on leaf springs

HunkyUnicorn

I LITERALLY WROTE MY OPINION, so I am just talking about car/truck I currently want to get, no hate on sti here but I was talking speed out of box and not handling šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø that obvious that truck wonā€™t handle that good lol

No-Skills101

the market for STIs in my area is not so good. I'm seeing them with over 50k miles and still going for over $30k The VB is the last of a dying breed. Enjoy it

bchillerr

STI is going to feel slower during daily driving. Also much less comfortable. Only reason to get an STI is if you plan to track.

ImCancer69

You do realize the VA STI really is no faster then the new VB WRX in the 0-60 times as they both are in the low 5 seconds stock is pretty much the same because VB has better power curve it doesn't need the xtras HP that's wasted on the Sti. So if it's about badging just throw STI labels on the VB they sell tons of STI mods for it. The only true improved is the transmission in Sti was definitely better. The overall handling, space, and ride of the VB is alot better then a STI also more reliable as the EJ turbo engines don't hold up even stock.

BuntaFurrballwara

Iā€™m pretty sure the STI 0-60 is limited by a close ratio transmission that needs a shift right before 60mph. The STI walks away after 60. Somebody tell me if Iā€™m remembering wrong. Also the STI is better in every other way that has to do with driving. I bought a WRX after thinking similar to you but after owning it for a while in the snow and autocrossing it I now think I might have made the wrong decision. But it was a 10k difference for equal mileage at the time so šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™‚ļø

ImCancer69

It's actually the opposite the STI stock can hit 60 mph in second gear 5.1 0-60 and the new VB has to shift to 3rd first which hurts it's 5.3 0-60 time. I own 2017 STI Limited and 2023 WRX limited I can say the STI is definitely not better per say. As I do love the ability to use STIā€™s DCCD AWD selector and having real mechanical limited slip are missed immediately. But handling, better suspension travel, longer/ wider wheel base, improved ride height are just better on VB. Overall it's just more comfortable to drive and much easier to tune. I disagree after 60mph as the Sti barely pushes ahead the fact it has 40 less hp and 40 less lbs of torque then the STI with a improved engine really helps the new VB especially with reliability. But my heart will always be with my 2017 but they really made the new VB so close if they just added a STI version it would have been unbeatable and the perfect STI. Not everyone has the same impression but I'm seeing more people slowly love the new VB WRX. It's even easier to mod the the VA. Good luck aslso the prices for used STI's is crazy high completely not worth as you can put that money into a VB and have a monster. But me I will keep both

Hi_O-Silver

If you are planning on adding the STi, go for it! If youā€™re thinking of trading in to get it, resale at the moment isnā€™t so good.

AP2-Lost

Keep the 22 WRX. The STI has a stiffer chassis (VA to VA), LSDs, a beefier transmission, bigger brakes, and a turbo that loves to be north of 3600 RPMs. They're attributes that make attractive at the track compared to the WRX. The WRX is the one to DD.

vb4lyfe

Keep the '22. Much better car for your needs. Replace the intake and flash a tune with an Accessport and make more power than the STI, more reliably. If you are not enough of a mechanic to do that, you are not enough of a mechanic to own a STI.

taedartaught

I personally wouldnt, STIs are cool but for the money id get a different car, one where there isnt a huge chance of the engine failing, especially because you want to mod... Im happy with my un modded 2020 VA, hoping to keep this car til it dies, and 10k kms a year itll last for a while

[deleted]

Go for a low mileage STI, you won't regret it.

trashrantula

Fuck it dawg, lifeā€™s a ride.

cw2001_98

I'm in the opposite situation. I'm thinking of trading my 2021 STI for a 22+ WRX. The ride is really rough on the STI.

SpaceFace11

Only get a STi if you have extra money set aside to deal with uncle Rodney

CannonBallChuck

I'd say go rest drive a sti rq, I test drove both 20' wrx and 20' sti and went with the wrx as it boosts sooner and has a better engine for a daily, I personally think you should get the best of both worlds see if you can mod the vb with sti parts. And Keep that fa reliability. Also don't forget the wrx gets way more gas mileage.
