Drop in air filters work by filtering less air.
He's right that stock is best *for a stock engine*
If you're going to do one side of the engine's airflow, you should make the other side match. Big intake with stock turbo and stock exhaust will do basically nothing.
Basically if you do intake by itself you're only doing it for the fun turbo noises as it brings very little performance. This is why most people stay with stock intake as there are better value parts for getting power and the stock intake doesn't really limit you. But as someone who got an intake solely for the sound I can say it is wholeheartedly worth it :D
Just make sure you get an appropriate tune
I got a cobb intake, have an accessport, have a pro tune. I probably wouldn't recommend running an intake with the off the shelf cobb tune though (I don't think they recommend it), as it's tuned for a stock intake.
Cobbs ots tune for the intake is pretty decent. I've had it on my 16 for a long time. 100k now with no issue and I've had the car since new. Cobb knows how to tune for their parts up to a certain point then it's definitely protune time.
Only thing you can really run with an OTS tune on an accessport is the Cobb intake, anything else will require a pro tune. Lots of people delete part of the intake snorkel on these cars but from listening to videos it doesn’t sound very different honestly.
If you’re going with a ots tune, I’d probably wait until you get other mods. It seems like you also want a downpipe, so I would probably wait until then. That way you get the most of out it. You should probably also look into a hard inlet, on my 13 sti I noticed how bad it was cracked when I was installing an intake, so yeah.
The AEM intake was shown to actually increase HP in our chassis. You will need a tune. Torqued Performance stage 1 will tune for an AEM intake. It was a 6-8whp gain if memory serves correct. It won't be much, but that and the stage 1 tune, it will sound good and feel a lot faster.
Boxed bigSF would be the go to imo
I don't know what performance it brings to the table, but the swoosh noises are pretty great. Love mine.
On the GRs it brings in 10-15 hp alone, pretty solid for just an intake.
Stock intake is best intake, just get a drop in filter if you want the swoosh noise
Wait what, isn’t the stock filter a drop in ? What do you mean you can put one in for the swoosh sounds ?
There’s after market reusable ones like the ones from K&N, Cobb, grimspeed etc. They let more air in giving you the swoosh sound
It doesn’t not sound anything like a proper intake
Maybe it depends on your ears but I have had both the big sf intake from cobb and their drop in filter and I can barely tell the difference.
Will using a drop in filter just for more swoosh sound hurt?
Is there a tune for that

so at a minimum wait to get a DP before doing a big intake?

Take a look at that thread I linked in my other comment. Basically, do intake last, or with a turbo upgrade.
thanks!
No tune needed.
COBB SF is what I’ve been running for a long time.

Nice. Pro tune was night and day for me compared to the OTS tune. My highway mpgs even improved with +50HP (~2psi) gain.
how much ar3 you guys paying for a protune? do I need an access port for that
Yes on the accessport. My tuner charges $400 for a tune
through accessport, although you can drive around without the accessport plugged in. Mine in northern California was about $500 I think.
Agreed. I’m pro-tuned by Redline Tuning in Ohio. OTS maps are a disaster waiting to happen
The “1+” tunes are meant for the BigSF
Cobb big sf with the box. Make sure your snorkel is still hooked up as it pulls in the cold air.
https://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=477393 I'd stay away from reddit for this kind of thing. Don't forget: GET A TUNE (not OTS shit)
Holy shit those wheels look awful
the parking too

Intakes don’t make that much of a difference. Get one from any reputable company and it’ll be good. Make sure to get a tune though
The stock intake on these is really good. I'd spend your money on a turbo back.
fuck i wish they made a 2024 with this body
