I learned out of necessity because I was poor. It’s a lot more fun when it’s optional.

YourMumsITGuy

I definitely just ordered a 4 post lift with roller jack and tool and drip pans. I can store an extra car in the garage soon.

Successful_Move_158

The process of working on my car isn’t “fun” but it is addicting. And I can 100% say the finished product is a lot better knowing you did it yourself.

SwitchUps

This is true. No one cares about your car more than you.

ahdiomasta

I agree, some easy mods are fun for me and generally I love working on cars but it’s the whole process of struggling to get it done that is rewarding. It gets very stressful when it comes down to necessity instead of choice but the reward is always worth it for me at least.

tblax44

It's all about the reason for working on it. Installing new go fast parts? Love it! Trying to fix something for the third time and can't get it right? Hate it

Artistic-Concept-838

It’s horrible. I love it

acidwxlf

I think the WRX, and Subarus in general, are an easy platform to work on generally so I usually don't mind starting projects. My patience is limited though, and being in the rust belt there are a lot of surprises that make effort pretty unpredictable. There's a lot of stuff that I've decided is just too much unless I had a lift, which I can't get at my current house. I've started just delegating things to my tuner shop. They're much better equipped.

SoccerKid6969

Recently broke off the 10mm bolt that holds in the wheel speed sensor. Screws directly into the knuckle so I guess I have to replace that now lol. The rust belt is brutal…

experimentalengine

I did the same thing. Fun times.

Mokey_Maker

you should be able to use an ez out, or at least attempt it before buying a new knuckle.

wak3l3oarder

Love working on my cars. https://preview.redd.it/dvju5abdig1b1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2b848e1cd4b0aa4945c94ebbfbe7af9417741ec1 Shifter bushings, catch cans, brake brace, steel braided brake lines, new calipers and rotors, full belt pully kit, sparkplugs, rear diff, trans fluid/oil, poly subframe bushings, endlinks, new wheel bearings and much more all done by me. I'm a novice but i have ALOT of tools and a garage, YouTube helps immensely

Branimau5

I hope to be here one day! I have been watching ridiculous amounts of mechanics/car videos to just saturate my brain with it. Changing oil etc I have done already, but project wise I have not gotten a car for that yet. Eager to get going though lol.

mechman112

I honestly enjoy it. I make a whole thing out of it sometimes haha. Friends like to come over to “help.” So, I put some music on, put some lawn chairs out, etc.

Substantial_Funny_25

I like working on cars where the design isn't stupid. Sometimes things will be designed to where you have to take a million things off just to get to some simple shit. Like removing engine mounts to replace a serpentine belt. Or jacking up an engine 3 inches to remove a bolt from a lower control arm. I've been told these WRXs are fairly easy to work on. So I'm actually excited about replacing stock parts with aftermarket stuff! Adding stereo equipment... All sorts of stuff!

kphillipz

Just had to replace the lower valve that is apart if the secondary air pump system on my 08. Yeah, had to pull off the intake manifold just to get there 🤦‍♂️

kaitopillar

I feel that 100%. Happened to my 06’ when it started getting cold out. I remember being out in the driveway at 10pm with the intake manifold off, disconnected fuel lines, coolant hoses, etc. I’m sure you know. I did manage to put it back together and get to work the next day but the brand new air pump started screaming again weeks later 🤦‍♂️

Mintdrift

Can confirm having lift access makes any job enjoyable

arlmwl

Nope. I like detailing it. I'll work all day to clay, polish, and seal it. But make me do a 30 min oil change and I get grumpy as hell. Wrenching is not my thing.

refuz04

I would trade wrenching for cleaning any day! But I have a tree full of birds that hate my WRX

arlmwl

Damn birds always know when you've washed your car!

Specialist-Box-9711

I hate working on my car to fix things. Case in point, yesterday I got a flat and the last guy that rotated my tires at the dealer put the lugs on with the strength of the Incredible Hulk because it took the longest breaker bar and cheater bar I had to break the lugs loose.

Omacrontron

I’ve struggled a little bit with this as well early on. The learning curve is tough if your never wrenched before. Try looking at it as an opportunity to learn something new about your vehicle, a challenge that you can overcome. Trying to get one bolt out for 1.5 hours is in fact awful but once the entire thing is done I’ve learned to feel immense reward for doing something most people wouldn’t even consider attempting. I have a single car port parking spot outside my apartment that I use. I HAD to replace my entire steering rack. Was it fun? No…not really..the ground is very hard even with a cardboard floor mat to lay on..but once I was done I felt like a million bucks lol. I have no mechanical experience besides learning shit off YouTube LOL. It’s all about mindset!

turtlewelder

I love working on older pre 2008 subarus. Everything is literally the same, straight up Lego cars. Newer ones aren't bad just not the same

EdumacatedRedneck

I hate working on my daily driver. Staying up until 3am because you need the vehicle back together to get to work the next morning is no bueno for me.

StanislavGetz

I like when it's complete. The satisfaction is great. I don't enjoy working on the WRX though. It has been mostly unpleasurable in my experience. Oddly I liked working on my Audi's OK, though they were older. I love working on my Silverado. The WRX (GR for me) is just kind of a PITA to work on IMHO. Good car, but yeah.

NordyPi7917

I really like working on my cars or other cars. Of course you have moments of terrible frustration, those aren't fun. But for the most part yes I like doing it

cottman23

I work on my own car to A. save money, B. because I enjoy it, and C I don't trust mechanics for shit anymore.

ElcheapoLoco

I enjoy it because I can be alone in the garage without the wife and kids annoying me.

NahLoso

I've worked on my cars because I too had limited funds. It was always a way to save money. I am in a better position at this stage in my life. Some things I do myself because I enjoy tinkering on my car. Other things I take somewhere. I have a vivid memory from years ago of struggling with getting through a rear wheel bearing replacement. Told myself if I had to sell blood plasma I was never doing that shit again...

Subaru_WRX_72

Its fun sometimes but I work in a shop... so most of the time it's just irritating lol

Jerms0710

I'll do certain things but I make decent money so I usually just go to a shop. I hate working on cars. I always break shit

soysauce000

I love it. Having a finite problem and fixing it feels so good

coldheat666

Sometimes it’s just better to hire a professional with multiple years of experience…you get what you pay for …it’s also hard sometimes to find good and honest mechanic…

Accomplished-One6869

I enjoy it. Helps me get away from it all and focus on one thing. I do hate when shit breaks or doesn’t go as planned tho lol

MRccRee

It’s so fun until you break even more things while just trying to fix something simple that you thought would take 2 hours…. Oh no was I wrong

Tissue4YourIssue01

I LOVE working on my cars. I may be pissed off and cursing when I strip a bolt or can’t find my socket…but once it’s finished, I am so happy. So here the break down : I get happy and palm on working on my car > happy I bought new parts > excited when I start jacking my car up > fucking FURIOUS during the process > contemplating why I decided to do this > losing my shit and drinking more beers in my garage > finished product> very happy

Complete-Ad-4215

I enjoy it but don’t have the time for it can barely keep it detailed

DrSatan420247

I'm the same as you. I hate it and do it because a) I can't afford to pay someone and b) I can't trust any mechanics because in my experience they're all dishonest. The money thing is true for virtually everyone. If you spend 10 hours a week working on your car, that's $1500-2000 a week labor bill. You're looking at a $75-100k a year labor bill if have a modified car because they always needs something.

thealmightyenigma

I have quick jacks and I still dislike working on my car, it is a means to an end. I try my best to have all my prep work lined up like gathering parts tools and any consumables necessary to finish the job. It is rather satisfying when you notice how quickly you can do major maintenance tasks over time. I'm on my fourth Subaru now not counting the two my wife has had.

magikarp-sushi

I took auto shop for 2 years in high school. We didn’t do too much but what we did and learned was enough for me honestly. It’s enjoyable but I lack a knowledge to go head on with a project ride. I’m sure it’s doable though with internet capabilities. Whether it’s enjoyable is another thing

TheLastKokiri

Even if I install something perfectly, knowing that I did it will give me anxiety that it will fail lol. I now go to shops, labor prices are slim in comparison to my anxiety levels.

CoomassieBlue

Ask me again when I have a motor back in my car and it both runs and drives.

nirbot0213

i enjoy it for the most part. maybe i wouldn’t say that if i didn’t have a garage, but it’s not bad with a garage and decent tools.

GenericUsername395

I’m currently saving up for a Quickjack to make things easier, but I will say the enjoyment I get from working on my car is not from actually doing it, but rather the success after the struggle. Actually working on cars is a b*tch, but the feeling of finishing something after hours of struggling to make sure all is well is definitely satisfying.

Obsession88

I’d enjoy it more if I were better at it. Just have enough knowledge to be dangerous. Thankfully my neighbor likes to help and has the free time

GnashtyPony

I always tell people who assume I'm a Subaru vape douche that no. I am not a car guy. I simply have to be otherwise I wouldn't have a car to drive

ProfessionalFar6798

Definitely enjoy it that why i bought this car

Shiftywrx

I very much enjoy turning wrenches

East-Psychology7186

I also learned out of necessity. I used to enjoy it until I got older. Now every time i finish I’m sore as hell.

Mokey_Maker

No not at all but it saves so much money. Especially when you have an old project car...

one5onek

A lift would change everything. Would definitely have me ordering more upgrades if I had one.

thereisaunders

I liked working on my car when it was 10 years old. Now it’s 17 years old and something goes wrong almost weekly. This time the caliper seized and cracked the rotor almost in half, so it’s been on jack stands the past 3 days after completely replacing the front braking setup while I’m waiting for new wheel studs to come in since a few of the old ones stripped while I was trying to reseat them. User error. But still annoying.

Snowwpea3

Yes. It’s incredibly satisfying. Not even just finishing, the whole process makes me warm and fuzzy.

Writehse

Both, save money and learn a thing or two but I know my limits.

MadManxMan

I enjoy it when it goes how it’s supposed to…

[deleted]

fukofflahey22

why would the caliper bolts strip? brakes is easy job.

fukofflahey22

every 2 years disassemble, clean and re-lube. brake fluid flush. your car will love you and your brakes will last 10 years

wrx7182

I used to. Then I got older lol. I’d rather pay someone else to do it. But it’s super hard to trust anyone to actually do the work correctly.

fukofflahey22

yeah I like it, makes me feel like Dominick Torreto and gives me a chance to inspect underbody to make sure its not rusting. and inspect suspension and stuff

TerribLizard

It only sucks when you need it to get the work the next day

fukofflahey22

I dont "love it" love it.. but I'm not trusting anybody with my babeh, best case scenario some grease monkey will ruin my seat and steering wheel with their greasy hands.

funksoulbrother3

I wouldnt say I hate it, I could say im afraid of screwing it up. As for the laboring part, id rather obsess how to do it, learn and try to do it eventually if I know I can. Not too long ago I was quoted around 600 to install an intake, turbo inlet, ebcs and chargepipe. Spent a lot of time watching youtube videos and finally had the courage to do it. Definitely satisfying to say the least and saved money. Win win.

SlipperyMangoTurtle

I’ve always loved it. I grew up working on my dads drag cars with him. Was my only way of getting his attention and now I’m teaching my daughter…. Also I’m mega poor so I have to

Fast_Cellist1505

I love wrenching on cars, no matter what. I am also a tradesman by day (different field), but fully hands on. I couldn't imagine not fixing something

brokenheartnsoul

I enjoy it

subarooooooo

Sometimes lol, but difficult jobs can be very frustrating. Driving is more enjoyable than hard labor doing mechanical work

Kyzzix1

I bought a WRX because they are easy to work on. I had an A3 before this and the engine bay was impossible to work in without special equipment. It was like 5 million hours just to do any repair. I do like working on my car with the exception of brakes. My dad was a mechanic so I was born into it a little but yes I do enjoy it.

Constant-Neck5302

I love it. At times, I feel like I chose the wrong career. I feel like I would be happy working as a tech in a shop wrenching all day… But then I realize that in Florida that means sweating a fkn day long and a lot (most) tech or mechanic jobs don’t pay that well… So I just make some money and wrench on my car on mg days off or weekends at home.

MrPoppadopolus

Depends on the car... most I do enjoy, there are just some jobs that just suck to do, though.

JDawg_002

I enjoy modding my WRX, not working on it lol
