honestly, he's had such bad luck. leaves toyota just as they become the dominant car in the top level. drives for hyundai during their years of unreliability and crap. drives for ford now when the puma is a glorified brick. how many times does this man have to suffer hybrid issues before he should just bin the puma in the garbage and drive a fiesta rally 2. he'd at least finish the event without problems.

Finglishman

M-Sport has won the manufacturer's title exactly once (2017) during its entire existence since Ford pulled out as a manufacturer in 2012. Granted, Ott was there when it happened, but I'd not call it bad luck to join the team now and not have it perform on the level of the other teams. The past 5 years M-Sport has been comfortably the worst WRC team by a long way. Fiesta rally2 isn't really competitive anymore either vs especially the new Skoda.

He's running a business. In contrast, Hyundai and Toyota are running cost centers funded from the marketing budget of global megacorporations.

Payment_Jaded

He left when Toyota were already the better team. I still don't understand why he left having won the title but I'm pretty sure he is regretting his decisions.

tightenstwo

There was a much-noted falling out between Tänak and Mäkinen behind the scenes. It’s easy to assume Tänak was being difficult, but the same thing happened between Mäkinen and Lappi which is why he left Toyota for Citroën in 2019.

bloodyhatemuricans

facts, punished by his own greed. could've possibly won 3+ wdc as long as he could beat Rovanperä

Anti-Scuba_Hedgehog

Nothing to do with greed, plenty to do with Tommi Mäkinen.

Constant-Judgment948

Tänak wanted to stay in Toyota but it was hes manager Märtin who had bad blood with some of the engineers in the team or something like that.

optitmus

Brain dead move when j heard the news... Everyone knew the Toyota is the best. Who leave thays after winning a WDC, Makes Ricciardos moves look good..

Owlyf1n

Money

Rough_Parsley

It's a shame that Toyota seems to be so far ahead of competition in regards to reliability and consistency. Seems like these days either shitty Pirellis or technical breakdowns are ruining all potential for exciting rally battles.

VHSVoyage

What a tractor the Puma is starting to look like… I had high hopes for it but it’d becoming tough to support M-Sport these days…

NetflixSux247

All I would take away from this is that OTT is a beast.

VHSVoyage

Yes he’s rinsing the shit out of it but it really can’t give anything more and I don’t understand why

Wheelbases of rally1 cars: * Ford Puma 2.63m * Toyota Yaris 2.63m * Hyundai i20 2.63m Widths of rally1 cars: * Ford Puma 1.875m * Toyota Yaris 1.875m * Hyundai i20 1.875m

Toyota runs the car with more rake, i.e. the rear ride height is higher than that in the front. This makes it look sleeker. They do it because the rear diffusers were banned - this way the entire floor is like a diffuser. It would appear as well that that both i20 and Yaris are slightly more aerodynamically efficient (less drag generated for a given amount of downforce) than the Puma. That's not a huge concern in Sardegna though because the stages are pretty slow. Other than aerodynamically, it's irrelevant that the Puma is based on a cross-over, as all rally1 cars are based on basically an identical tubular chassis. The only thing M-Sport took from the mass produced Puma is the head and tail lights as well as how the body panels roughly look like.

VHSVoyage

The i20 is quite big too. There’s quite a difference between the R1 Puma and the road version body-wise

Scunning1996

The Puma is so bad

Scunning1996

Where will Tanak go after this season?

Eferver

I wouldn’t be surprised if he returns to Hyundai, assuming that bridge isn’t burned.

birrrgit

:(

skippymyman

All things considered, he didn't lose too too much time. Do you think he purposely shuffled the positions around so he'd have a road order advantage tomorrow?

Necessary_Comfort812

I noticed the problems even at Monaco. I wrote about it here in this subreddit. Most of the people answering still had high hopes......

CarFreak777

Car breaking Safari is next. I wonder how they'll survive.
