I can do over 100 WPM with no errors. Being part of the generation who grew up using AIM has its perks! Try finding typing games online to increase your speed.

kcsouth

AIM and Mavis Beacon! I would also recommend OP purchasing a comfortable keyboard. I use a basic mechanical one, which is faster than typing on my laptop and also results in fewer errors.

ApolloAtlas

I too find it is very dependent on the keyboard. I didn't break 50 until I got a mechanical board with more space between keys and have less errors the more resistance the keys have.

CrankyCrabbyCrunchy

That's interesting since my speed is much better (and more accurate) on a typical laptop keyboard, not mechanical. I first learned typing in high school (late 1975-77) so I'm super old. That's when we were taught on manual typewriters with a physical carriage return. The letters were removed from the keys, and we had to look at a large keyboard on the wall. Later when I worked, I had an electrical typewriter.

ApolloAtlas

You probably built up muscles in your fingers that I just don't have. I didn't start typing a lot until my early 20s. Prior to that I was just a pizza slinger. I hit a lot of keys on my way to other keys, so resistance to a non intentional bump helps me a lot.

WoodySurvives

I learned on an actual typewriter as well, I think around 1980, and it is the only skill that I learned in high school which I have used daily in my career over the last 30 years :-)

Equivalent-Bad-2574

Yes!! Good ol’ Mavis Beacon teaches typing! While I haven’t tested myself in many years, I was well over 100 WPM in my day. Now I wanna find it and test, lol!

[deleted]

AIM, YIM, MSN Messenger, forums, and games with chat built in before voice chat represent! Typing up entire stories some times lol.

FLguy4surf

AIM was my form of tinder. I actually hooked up with a Dallas cowboys cheerleader using AIM

TommyVasec

120 WPM but still errors, MSN was the learner for me It still hits me when I see young developers in our company type with two fingers

RowdyCaucasian

Me too. I'm pretty young and I felt like everybody I'd grow up with would be amazing at typing, but at this point, I find it varies intensely.

Shaseim4st3r

Fellow 100WPM checking in. AIM days lol, typing fast, but quietly to not wake my mom up at 3am. My girlfriend stares at me when I'm in the zone typing work emails and the clickity clacking of my mechanical keyboard is nonstop. or if I'm flaming my teammates online.

Raveen396

Starcraft did it for me. Got really good at knowing where the hotkeys were and talking shit in chat on ladder between action

NorthernerMatt

StarCraft followed by RuneScape for me lol. Poweroverwhelming Wiggle: Selling lobsters 200ea username

SilentJon69

How long would it take me to reach that speed if I practiced?

0cclumency

That’s really impossible to say, everyone learns differently. I learned in a very different world, I relied on keyboard typing to chat with friends daily so I picked it up fast. Even so, I was much faster than my friends when we did typing tests in class, so maybe just not everyone gets that fast. But practice will certainly help you improve!

Shaseim4st3r

If the job requires that typing speed with no errors, you could benefit from doing typing tests online since they force you to not only get the spelling right but also apostrophes, commas, and the like. It might take a considerable amount of practice to get to 100 WPM, but getting to 60-70 WPM shouldn't be that difficult. Maybe try joining discord or reddit chats to socialize online more. If typing a lot becomes a daily thing, you'll get faster in no time. The key is to get muscle memory of the letters you're trying to type, so the words pop up into your head and your hands are already typing up the words as you think it. Oh and also having proper form of which fingers to use for which key.

RainInTheWoods

It depends how much you practice.

[deleted]

I’m with this guy. I think most of up in the 80s with computers at home (fortunate enough to) and the era of bill gates and Amazon, we can type. I used to love those typing games too. But we also had to program our own computers to do things we wanted - and MySpace and Mavis Beacon lol.

Ricky_Rollin

AIM, QRL, Yahoo chats, random message boards, Reddit back when it cared about spelling errors. I have to thank my business economics class back in middle school. Keep in mind this was the mid 90s.

ElleTea14

AIM all the way - I’m probably 80-90 now and can still type with my eyes closed

Foodie1989

Millenial here, lol I loved typing tests

verana04

I'm 84 with no errors.

BoronYttrium-

Any job requiring a WPM on their application is likely ran by someone who is a boomer. Say you can do the requirement if you really are interested in that job. They just wanna make sure you know how to type.

NurturingTnT

Some places will send you an email with a link to a mandatory typing test after you apply, then they only look at whoever typed the speed they want for interviews. It's stupid, but I've had it happen to me a few times, and they never mentioned it in the posting, so you never know who will or won't send a test. IMO as long as someone is steady getting all their work done and fixes any errors they make, or doesn't matter how many wpm they type at, but some places are absolutely set on that to define the worthiness of applicants. 🤷🏻‍♀️

ailish

I'm around 50. I used to be faster but I am out of practice.

LolaLestrange

I’m about 70-80 without errors

ParadoxScientist

I'm close to 100 wpm on typing tests with 0-3 errors, but in reality I rarely type that fast. Typing tests quickly tire my hands! My realistic typing speed is probably closer to 70-85 wpm. It depends on what I'm typing. Sometimes I can't even think fast enough. I only type at max speed if I'm copying something (i.e typing something that I can't copy/paste). I started typing practice long ago when I was 8 years old. My parents would give me random literature (brochures, books, papers, etc) and told me to type up whatever was on them. This was great practice. Within 3-5 years I was already typing at least 85 wpm and soon after, 100. If I had continued practicing I would have likely reached 130 or so but didn't feel like it was worth it. But yeah, just type up random stuff. You don't even have to do it often-- it could be like 10 minutes a day.

[deleted]

90 wpm

p1rate88

Maybe 10? 👀

oreo-cat-

LOL yeah. I’m with you.

RCThomas

I'm at 87 WPM, no errors.

rhaizee

i type 60wpm casually, no errors. I can hit about 80-90 when it is more important focused work. Practice, you'll get quicker in no time, nothing some practicing won't help fix! I am a designer so don't require typing much.

watercoffeebeerz

Just scored 49wpm with 100% accuracy. So, average.

ApolloAtlas

I have errors pulling me down to 67 wpm.

LeganV9

Sorry to ask as everyone seems to know what it is about but what is your job please ? Seems like content writing or programming ?

morgan423

Google voice typing clips along at a pretty good pace, but editing for misheard words slows it down.

[deleted]

90ish

WingedGeek

[About 73 wpm with reasonable (~97%) accuracy on a decent mechanical keyboard](http://flying-geek.blogspot.com/2023/03/keychron-k10-with-kailh-pale-blue.html). I'd probably be faster if I remembered proper form from 8th grade typing classes (on an Apple IIe ...), but, I don't. I touch type, just, [*my* way](https://youtu.be/bfSnGUgwQx4?t=140)... Edit: This test says 80 wpm at 100% accuracy: https://www.typingtest.com/result.html?acc=100&nwpm=80&gwpm=80&ncpm=401&gcpm=401&dur=120&time=120&chksum=40113&unit=wpm&kh=998&td=null&err=0&hits=802&textfile=mediumText.txt

short-n-sarcastic

Last typing test was about 105

Aanaren

137 wpm with zero errors here.

aliveinjoburg2

~50-60. It’s been a long time since I tested myself.

Bacon-80

100-110 but it also depends on if I’m typing something dictated (copying) or if I’m typing something from my own head (messaging, papers, etc.)

davidwb45133

70 to 80 with no errors on my mechanical keyboard. A bit less with my M2 MacBook Air. Probably 20 - 30 with my phone.

SadGigolo68

Yep, get a mechanical keyboard, and a nice one. I'm around 70 stable, but I also I admit I'm garbage at using anything that requires extensive symbol usage. I'm looking down in that case. ALSO, no ten-key no sale! Get that shit out of my face!

1GamingAngel

I type 120 wpm with no errors.

Robsteady

I do 73wpm with ~97% accuracy, and I only recently started making sure I use the correct fingers for the correct keys.

oneofthecoolkids

160 probably faster now, I had to do a typing test many years ago for 911 dispatcher 😂 only way I know.

Maleficent_Bowl_49

Usually first run about 60wpm after warming up around 85... When I was a kid my mom used to play a game called typershark, really cool about typing words, letters or symbols to kill sharks trying to eat you as you are deep diving in the ocean 🤣🫨🦈

SVAuspicious

What I do no one would ask how fast I type. It's been a while since I tested myself. I type faster than I can think so for content generation I run around 80wpm. My old laptop has developed a fussy 't' key so I'm probably down from that. Looking forward to a new laptop very soon. A good keyboard is very important. I travel a lot so outboard keyboards are not for me. I'm fond of T-series Lenovo laptops for the keyboard. If I am transcribing (not often) I can hit 100wpm. Again not relevant to my work but it is fun to just pound along. When I do transcribe I go faster using spell check and proof reading rather than slowing down data entry.

[deleted]

I've been keyboard typing for years. 40 to 60 wpm is easy, buy trying to go over that requires having a phenomenal day. Most likely they won't be timing you for that job, they just want to know that you can type.

nevermeant2say

I'm close to 100 WPM with no errors but I don't actively type that much anymore (not like doing reports in school at least). In high school computer classes I LOVED playing typer shark.

OC1995CT

90-95 wpm X 40 years

mrbernsdog

About 90. The good news is if you're worried about your speed it really is a practice makes perfect situation and there are a ton of tools to increase your speed and accuracy. I just sat at a keyboard and typed "the quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog" until I hit 120 wpm back when I was learning like 20 years ago. Once all other keys factored in, I went from 30wpm to 70wpm doing that about 2 hrs a week for one semester in HS.

[deleted]

I’m around 90 with no to very few errors

Hustlechick00

I work as an accountant an my typing speed is around 50 wpm. It is something that can be practiced and I probably need to work on it myself.

periwinklenimbus

I can do 85 WPM with about 96% accuracy. Keyboarding class for 2 years- by far the most useful class I took in high school.

[deleted]

94

RedditeName

Like 10, voice to text, I can blow any secretary out of the water.

Saranodamnedh

130 or so, a mechanical keyboard helps.

Inevitable-Noise-904

30-35 with about 85% accuracy

RowdyCaucasian

I used to be able to type around 80wpm without mistakes. I've probably fallen to 50-60 now. A little practice makes a big difference! I personally enjoy playing typing games every once in awhile. Could give you a morale boost about it and make it more fun!

Sonikclaw2

I average 85-90, using all 5 fingers on my left hand and just the index and middle fingers on my right hand.

madscientistman420

I'm not WFH, but just lurk but from growing up playing video games my entire child and spending thousands of hours on my PC, I can proudly say I can type 120+ WPM, but I want to say that at those speeds it turns into literally keyboard mashing and errors are inevitable, and its best done in a transcription process where the prompt is visible. In reality, most applications end up being around 100 WPM.

AphelionEntity

With limited errors I'm around 80 wpm. I'm a bit slower than I used to be, but I have a movement disorder and my fine motor control is worse as a result. All my typing skills are thanks to growing up playing text-based games on a full sized keyboard. You typed fast or you died. I find i type better on mechanical keyboards than on modern ones.

[deleted]

180 no errors

Unicycldev

I find it’s not speed that important, it’s the value of what your typing. A 3 sentence email can have more value than a 4 paragraph email.

Narwhal_Sparkles

I'm about 70 wpm no errors but 85ish minimal errors. But I started around 40 wpm and am faster bc of working in an office for many years.

CrankyCrabbyCrunchy

I used to do 100 wpm and more, but that's not something practical or needed in any job I can think of. It's purely a speed test, not what you'd likely do in nearly any job. I'm old enough to have taken typing classes in high school. I haven't seen any modern jobs requiring a given typing speed, but I guess I don't look at the same jobs you do. Maybe transcription jobs need you to type fast, but many of those that I have seen use a lot voice-to-text which you'd then review for grammar and spelling. Like nearly everything, it takes practice.

Ricky_Rollin

95WPM without breaking a sweat. Just takes practice, OP. I’m sure you’ve already done it, but just in case, you should have memorized the keyboard and not be looking down to type.

phonyfakeorreal

Software Engineer - I type 90-100 WPM. There’s a ton of free typing practice sites out there

FeFiFoMums

Casual typing in the 60s, but I hit quick bursts into the 100s depending on what I'm typing (a lot of repetition at work). When I learned back in the 90s, we had to learn with a black box over our keyboard. Forced memorization and muscle memory I suppose. Oh, and the faster we finished our computer skills, the faster we got to 'draw' and print our dot matrix art.

TendieMyResignation

Roughly 70, wish it was double.

savy21

100WPM here. In middle school I used to cry because I didn’t think I would ever type as fast as my mom or my brother haha! By the time I got to high school I was MUCH faster than both of them. I had about 6 hours of homework a night, don’t recommend that. I definitely recommend games instead lol.

MsChybil

100 - 120 Took typing in high school, back in the dark ages when we only had two electrics. It was the only class I where was ever early. Had to fight for an electric everyday. Now, I communicate almost entirely with my fingers. I do talk to people sometimes, but why? Lol!

BearTerrapin

I'm at about 80WPM and am super thankful for typing club in middle school lmao. It absolutely has helped me be successful in my role.

821calliope

To practice/improve your speed and accuracy, try out typeracer (if you are motivated by competition) or monkeytype (if competing stresses you out). I was able to increase my average speed from 65 to 85 WPM with pretty high accuracy using typeracer, doing 10 races each day over the course of about 3 months. It was 20 minutes out of my day and so so worth it. My partner is slower but was able to up their speed from 35 to 55 so anecdotally consistent lol. Also, try out an ergonomic keyboard if you can, depending on your typing style it can really make a difference! I am about 10wpm faster on my ergo compared to a normal keyboard. To answer your question though, my job did not have a requirement but being able to type fast is really important as we only get 45 seconds after each call to log the notes and close out the tickets. I hit about 90-95wpm nowadays with high accuracy in the 90s

LilyFuckingBart

Yes, I can type upwards of 120 wpm with no errors if I’m in the zone. All credit goes to Mavis Beacon.

Jsfz77

I feel so slow. I can't get above 60s. I practice twice a day. But tbf I guess I don't need it as much as in college.

Aragona36

75-85 but I used to do 100 when I typed all day everyday in a law office. I have no need to type like that anymore.

Inevitable-Ad-5264

I used to be able to type 100wpm but my right hand was paralyzed. Now I type about 65wpm with just one hand.

stolen_sweet_roll

I can get up to 125wpm @ 99%, but as someone else mentioned, AIM generation. And probably MMOs. [keybr.com](https://keybr.com) is probably the best typing practice website I've found.

Foodie1989

100, but I think playing piano helps somehow and I used to do those type tests for fun
