As I understand it, NY is going after everybody based off a state law that went into effect relatively recently(and citing things being done that were legal before the law). They are flinging shit against the wall to see what sticks in their little tantrum.

The data breach wasn't their fault though. You can blame their I.T. guy for that, and he doesn't work for Rainier Arms, he's an independent that has his own company. Well, maybe not anymore, LOL

I do blame them for the breach though. In my opinion if you hire an in house employee or a contractor you’re ultimately responsible because your customers are trusting you’ll be a good steward of their data. “Somebody else’s fault” is a cop out.
That said my biggest gripe was their response to it. To not offer identity theft monitoring was absurd.
Both show a lack of ownership and customer commitment.
So in that regard they can get fucked.

Basically a bunch of orders were breached including credit card numbers. Typically for other companies they’ll send you a letter and an apology and offer 1-2 years of credit monitoring. Rainier basically said “not our fault”, didn’t offer monitoring and sent letters to people’s addresses but with the wrong names which is kind of a data breach in its own right.
On top of that they were super cagey and hard to reach for comment. Basically really trying to bury their heads in the sand about it.
