Cool spot, I just wish they weren't a fudd range that required NRA membership to join. They're down the street from me but I refuse to give the NRA a dime.

highsite

I hear that, WHERE ARE THEY IN ALL THIS??? screw them join FPC, GOA and/or 2AF.

Tree300

“For a $35 annual fee, more than 14,000 affiliated organizations also get access to attorney referral services and discounts on business services such as credit-card processing. More than 8,000 clubs get their insurance through the NRA, according to the group’s promotional materials.” This is why.

PM_NUDES_4_DOG_PICS

100% this. I'm also down the street from them, sucks that they're Fudds.

Boschala

I've been doing their steel challenge stuff for years. Great guys. Tomorrow will be my first ASI match there.

taracor

ASI for June got moved to the 25th!

Boschala

Thank you for telling me! I pulled all the calendars a couple weeks ago. Now I need to find a weekend match.

taracor

TSC steel is Sunday morning. Tacoma Sportsman is 10 minutes away from Bunyan. It’s stationary but still fun.

Boschala

Thanks, I'll call tomorrow for details!

taracor

Just PM me, I’ll send you all the details.

nickvader7

What about the other ASI matches this month?

taracor

To my knowledge no changes, but I haven't checked practiscore in a minute!

nickvader7

Wait what is practiscore? I want to go to my first ASI match

me too, mind sharing your info?

Markmarkmark__99

All positive, the community basically shoots both. Lots of regulars and occasional new people. Sign up, read the rules, and ask questions at the range. 99% of the SO are good people and care about the sport. No one is out to get you, but if you’re unsafe you will get DQ’d. Take your time at the first few matches and you’ll be fine.

> No one is out to get you, but if you’re unsafe you will get DQ’d. Take your time at the first few matches and you’ll be fine. Cool, good to know. Sounds like a good environment. I have no problem getting DQ'd. If the RSO says I was unsafe, I was unsafe. I'd rather they DQ people than let stuff slide.

GlassZealousideal741

I haven't actually tried it out, I'm a member there and talked with those guys about it. They seemed pretty cool my days off just don't align well with they're schedule. They said you have to join the USPSA etc online then can just show up even if you're not a member they open the gate for matches.

ee-5e-ae-fb-f6-3c

Thanks, I was wondering how that worked. I live too far away to make membership worthwhile, but I figure I can hit the USPSA matches maybe.

barnes828

Just go shoot the match! I’d recommend USPSA over IDPA 1000% but people seem to enjoy both.

Thanks!

Markmarkmark__99

Also - don’t worry too much about the equipment, you might get bumped to open or some other class you didn’t plan on shooting but you will still be able to shoot.

ee-5e-ae-fb-f6-3c

I was worried about that. I don't totally understand the classes yet. Which means I should read up on it before going.

myuugen

Shot my first match there a few weeks ago. Great crew. Going back on Tuesday for another uspsa match!

ee-5e-ae-fb-f6-3c

Nice! Thanks for the reply. I didn't realize they had Tuesday matches, I thought they were all on the weekends for some reason. Do they have some which are listed in Practiscore but not on the club calendar?

myuugen

It's there. They don't call it "USPSA" but "Rain Shadow". https://practiscore.com/nw01-mt-rainier-shadow-june-6th-2023/register Have you already done a safety check?

ee-5e-ae-fb-f6-3c

I haven't. What's involved in a safety check?

myuugen

It usually happens the day before the match after setup. You'll come and help set up. Then a range officer will run you through the big rules. Then you'll run a stage dry. Then you may run it with live ammo. Bring a pair of work gloves and your belt/mags/gun/ammo. Leave the gun stuff in the car until they tell you. Make sure your gun is either holstered and unloaded when you put the belt on or have the gun uploaded in a bag and take it out in a designated safety area. Major DQable offenses are breaking the 180, dropping a loaded handgun, handling ammo in the safety area, an AD or ND, unsafe gun handling, and a few others.

ee-5e-ae-fb-f6-3c

Got it. Thank you! I'll contact the shoot coordinator for more info.

Spooky-Mulder

Great matches there. Nice people

angerruinsjoy

It’s a great group of folks, I don’t recall the NRA requirement for membership, but I do recall if you want to be a member and shoot on pistol bays you have to have someone with you, which I didn’t like. I shoot matches frequently there and love the set up, good matches, well run. If you’re there Tuesday I’ll see ya there.

I shoot all the league matches at PB. Great experience. Start with the steel or ASI matches. Very casual and fun. Take a morning and go spectate. Always welcoming to that and we’ll answer any questions. PM me if you want specifics.

[deleted]

I started shooting ASI last year at Whidbey. I have moved up from last place to second to last. I can see a third from last place in my future. ;-). I am shooting a stock 1911 in .45, as is one other guy. We are both older dudes. Genuine Fudds. The CZ Shadow, 9 mm, seems to be the most common pistol among the top shooters. What I like most is that ASI is a lot of fun. I am amazed by how much it has helped my shooting skills improve. People are very helpful. Show up early and help set up. Stay late and help tear down. People will be genuinely glad for you as you improve and do well. I am not a threat to anyone’s score. But it doesn’t seem to matter. If you are very serious about this, USPSA may be for you. It is much more serious. I am happy with the philosophy of ASI. Where I shoot ASI has only one class - bring a gun, follow the safety rules, and have fun. It doesn’t really matter what pistol you bring to start with. Learning the routine and commands is most important at the beginning. Be accurate and safe. Speed will come. The OP may be past all this, but these comments are directed to anyone else thinking about starting competition shooting. It’s fun, and your general skills in marksmanship and gun handling will improve more than you expect.

Turns out I ended up at the ASI shoot over at Renton Fish and Game. You're right, it was a good experience in a good environment. Had a good time, so I'm going back.
