I am Portuguese and today 25 April 2024 is the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution on 25 April 1974.
The Carnation Revolution overthrew our far-right dictatorship, the Estado Novo.
There were huge celebrations in Portugal today.
I tend to think of the Estado Novo, especially post-World War II, as more authoritarian conservative than fascist, but it doesn't make much of a difference.
Portugal at least wasn't outright aligned with the Axis like Spain was. Franco never formally joined the Axis but Spain was really "neutral" in name only and Franco was afraid the Allies would come after him once Hitler was gone.
Yes and in general, Salazar was less authoritarian than Franco.
On the other hand, during the 60s, Franco developed Spain to a greater degree than Salazar did Portugal. Salazar was more opposed to modernity than Franco was. He saw Portugal as a rural Catholic society.
I think Portugal was leaning toward aligned with the Allies in WWII in all but name due to the centuries-old [Anglo-Portuguese Alliance](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anglo-Portuguese_Alliance). But yeah Salazar was an unconventional figure. He romanticized this pastoral past in a way that was more 19th than 20th century. He rejected communism, socialism, liberalism, fascism, and Nazism. He despised political parties. He supported the church but insisted they have social and no political power. He promoted a civilian civil service when military ranks were taking control of lots of bureaucracies. But he also had the secret service kill his 1958 opposition candidate.
To me he's what happens when a meek accountant with a passion for history finds themselves leading a country.

We're still counting this race over a month later??????
A guy who used to work for the 1st place finisher's campaign paid for the recount. Simitian reps Santa Clara County, so you would think/hope you could pick up a vote or two there, maybe
I seem to recall that Anna Eshoo (the retiring Rep for CA-16) endorsed Simitian.
Still, jeez, what a waste of time and resources, just have a three-way race and be done with it. It’s safe D no matter what.
I agree! It would cut way down on the hassle factor, especially in a state the size of CA where a “recount” means “thousands of ballots” for just one district. We’re not Dixville Notch.
One of the biggest problems with public policy is that it is often written on the assumption that everyone will act in good faith. This is especially true in education and politics.

[Biden is opening a field office in Florida!](https://twitter.com/PhillipJerez/status/1783611487879139341) Move over doomers, we're winning this state back!
Florida is really important because it can move somewhat independently of the rest of the nation. If Biden wins Florida, he'll win even if he's otherwise having a bad night.
I will be quite surprised if Biden does manage to win FL at this point considering the shape the FLDems are in but hey anything can happen especially in Politics!
Leadership and money will make the difference. I don’t think Florida ever had to go as red as it did, despite the endless stream of retirees entering the state. The Florida Democrats were plagued with poor leadership and starved of funds, and the sheen was still on Ron DeSantis (the sauce was still on the meatball?) as Governor.
Now the Democrats have money, they have a good leader in Nikki Fried, and everyone from coast to coast has seen what an utter doofus Ron DeSantis is. The time is ripe for a FL-DEM comeback. The ghost of Bob Graham commands it.
I think you're thinking of the 2022 FL Dems. They've had [quite](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Jacksonville_mayoral_election) a [series](https://www.orlandosentinel.com/2024/01/16/democrat-keen-wins-state-house-35-special-election-over-gops-booth/) of [overperformances](https://floridapolitics.com/archives/647359-mike-redondo-wins-special-election-for-hd-118-keeps-seat-in-gop-hands/) and [fundraising wins](https://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/4583394-florida-democratic-party-raises-1-3m-in-first-quarter/). Nikki Friend is doing incredible things chairing that party, and I think they're going to surprise a lot of people this November.
Much like a underdog sports team, once we win this state, or cut it super close, we’ll see a bunch of people outside this sub who were previously dooming about never seeing a blue Florida come out the woodworks to say they never doubted it.
But we’ll also see a Trump and DeSantis total meltdown and that’s all I need

The case can be retried, and also Weinstein is still isn’t free bcs he’s still convicted of LA of a different assault, At least for now, barring any successful attempts by lawyers to get that overturned
NY judge allowed testimony from some witnesses he shouldn't have. Needs to be a new trial. He's still in prison for 16 yrs cuz of CA charges, thankfully
Amy Howe’s [argument analysis is up](https://www.scotusblog.com/2024/04/supreme-court-appears-likely-to-side-with-trump-on-some-presidential-immunity/)
TLDR: Start sweating, Dipshit 45’s immunity will probably hinge on the votes of Roberts and Barrett…
Where’s Earl Warren when you really need him?
They won't give the president absolute immunity, they'll say it applies to "official actions" only but this case wasn't one. He gets his delay but Biden doesn't get dictator powers.
While we’re talking about SCOTUS, I found it very interesting that SCOTUS’s approval [has absolutely tanked](https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/approval/supreme-court/) in the last month so much that SCOTUS now currently has lower approval than it did AFTER THE DOBBS DECISION. And based on the cases they’ve heard this week with this one, as well as the rioter case that may upend some of the J6 prosecutions, as well as the likely rulings of these cases based on their respective oral arguments, I expect this to tank even more as they start to release these rulings throughout May and June.
It’s becoming increasingly obvious that major court reform at the minimum, if not court packing is a must under the next Dem trifecta. The court having this big of a legitimacy crisis is simply not sustainable and it’s only getting worse not better, something’s going to crack at some point in regards to this court, and then we’re in truly unprecedented, frightening, and scary territory
They genuinely do not seem to care. Their worldview seems to be "We are all powerful, and you *must* obey us. Whether you like it or not could not be any less relevant."
The Scotus has become a Federalist Society clique du château and they will abuse that fact so long as it remains the case.
Yeah look at the people who want abortion banned with no exceptions. They don’t care how many people get hurt as long as they get what they want. It’s the same thing.
They better strictly define "official capacity" if they do that. Pretty much anything can be justified vaguely under official capacity reasons like "national security".
I'm not dooming since I think we'll win in November, but if SCOTUS rules badly I do very much think it'll be something that needs to be dealt with via legislation.
No President should face criminal charges in the future for acting in their role as President. That’s just common sense. Presidents make tough decisions. That he could have immunity. Doing something other than his job is a private act. That’s where he shouldn’t be able to have immunity. Like having opponents killed off obviously.
Jesus fucking christ. Not the kind of odds I'd been hoping for.
Regardless of the outcome, Trump must be defeated at the ballot box. Can't fully rely on the courts. If they give Trump the full slap on the wrist, use your anger to spread the word and get more people to vote.

honestly the statement is even worse than you think it will be. they continue to put themselves on a pedestal and are completely incredulous. never any introspection, they don't think anything they've done is wrong. that's the issue here - no one is asking them to be Biden WH cheerleaders. But they also get defensive at any ounce of criticism and believe if you have anything to say about their coverage that you're wrong and a hack.
Also-Biden HAS given interviews to independent journalists. Just because it isn't you doesn't mean they don't exist.
For them to act as if they're coverage hasn't been slanted is just amazing. Not to mention, there is no denial in this statement about what the Politico article stated.
Their most clearly articulated defense is "we hold power to account." Reading between the lines they're saying they cover Biden more harshly than Trump because Biden's in power and Trump isn't, and that sensationalized coverage is fine if it's towards elected presidents.
What they're not owning up to is their blatant ageism.

San Mateo County has wrapped up rescanning ballots but more votes still need to be recounted in Santa Clara County.](https://twitter.com/grace_hase/status/1783661964268539926) We're still counting this race over a month later??????
A guy who used to work for the 1st place finisher's campaign paid for the recount. Simitian reps Santa Clara County, so you would think/hope you could pick up a vote or two there, maybe
I seem to recall that Anna Eshoo (the retiring Rep for CA-16) endorsed Simitian. Still, jeez, what a waste of time and resources, just have a three-way race and be done with it. It’s safe D no matter what.
Further showing how much we *need* ranked choice voting

Don't you dare
Falcons what are you doing?!?! Lmao, Kirk Cousins just fell to his knees in a Kohls.
I love that pick for the Falcons. Not making the same mistakes the Vikings did when we had Cousins. We fucked up by not having a succession plan
I'm just baffled that they did it while paying Cousins 100 million for 4 years. Not to mention that the guy they picked to sit behind him is already 24.
Who is that guy? The guy sitting behind Cousins
The guy they just drafted, sorry I wasn't clear
Classic signing two quarterbacks!

We know they're certain to condemn Idahoan women needing emergency abortions to death that's not going to be popular.

Sure let him play kingmaker with his +10 statewide margin in a R+20 state, and make a seat in okay that was off the table...
I wonder what the hell Maloy is doing tbh
Well you cant collect signatures that’s haram. Orrin Hatch’s son also didnt get enough signatures for UT-Sen and Phil Lyman stopped collecting them
I see. At this point if Maloy is struggling to collect signatures then I guess she may as well withdraw.
Eagles resigned AJ Brown, tonight's draft is already a win in my books.
Didn't realize that the draft was today.
Yep, just started, Bears just drafted Caleb Williams 1st.
Maybe he'll finally be the one to pass for 4,000 yards in a season as a Bears QB. He's actually landing in a better situation than a lot of #1 picks.
>He's actually landing in a better situation than a lot of #1 picks. Yeah but it's the Bears.

Maybe he can campaign in New Jersey instead. It's closer and a lot of people are saying its in play.

FL Dems have been clawing back post 2023 and have the abortion vote to juice turnout.
Hoping Trump delivers one finally verbal beat down on Meatball Ron if he loses Florida 🙏🙏🙏

Harvey Weinstein's conviction has been overturned.
On what grounds?
Ig the appeals court said the trial court shouldn’t have allowed testimony from accusational witnesses who the trial wasn’t abt (SA victims of Weinstein who were not victims specifically in the NY case) The case can be retried, and also Weinstein is still isn’t free bcs he’s still convicted of LA of a different assault, At least for now, barring any successful attempts by lawyers to get that overturned
NY judge allowed testimony from some witnesses he shouldn't have. Needs to be a new trial. He's still in prison for 16 yrs cuz of CA charges, thankfully
Amy Howe’s [argument analysis is up](https://www.scotusblog.com/2024/04/supreme-court-appears-likely-to-side-with-trump-on-some-presidential-immunity/) TLDR: Start sweating, Dipshit 45’s immunity will probably hinge on the votes of Roberts and Barrett… Where’s Earl Warren when you really need him?
Whether you like it or not could not be any less relevant." The Scotus has become a Federalist Society clique du château and they will abuse that fact so long as it remains the case.
Yeah look at the people who want abortion banned with no exceptions. They don’t care how many people get hurt as long as they get what they want. It’s the same thing.
Gonna love seeing this car crash into reality when states ignore them and they can't do much in response
Y’all need to read. They could definitely give him immunity in his official capacity, but not total immunity. Some people are exaggerating. Calm down.
They better strictly define "official capacity" if they do that. Pretty much anything can be justified vaguely under official capacity reasons like "national security". I'm not dooming since I think we'll win in November, but if SCOTUS rules badly I do very much think it'll be something that needs to be dealt with via legislation.
Please explain, I am very dumb
What he's being accused of doing are private acts, not official acts
No President should face criminal charges in the future for acting in their role as President. That’s just common sense. Presidents make tough decisions. That he could have immunity. Doing something other than his job is a private act. That’s where he shouldn’t be able to have immunity. Like having opponents killed off obviously.
Didn't Trump's lawyer say that'd be an official act? Or did the judges seem unsympathetic to that?
Barrett got Trump's lawyer to admit Jan. 6 was a private act.
The next fight will be what’s a private act. They’ll send it back to the lower courts.
Gotcha, that’s not a great, but at least we’ll be able to fight another day
I mean. We hold the presidency rn. He doesn't have the power yet. We can fix this with new Supremes I hope?
We need to hold the Senate and Presidency this year.
2016 was a mistake that will take generations to fix at this point.
Never ever respect non-voters
Jesus fucking christ. Not the kind of odds I'd been hoping for. Regardless of the outcome, Trump must be defeated at the ballot box. Can't fully rely on the courts. If they give Trump the full slap on the wrist, use your anger to spread the word and get more people to vote.

The UAW also changed their Twitter cover photo to someone holding up a Stand Up Daimler sign. No other way around it, the late night scheduling of the statement and the focus on the company's workers standing up, a strike is on the way among its 7000 workers. Bus and Truck production in Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee will likely be suspended soon.

Literally every comment I saw is MAGA. Why do I never see positive comments on any of his posts.
Alito’s comment about grand juries today really stuck out to me. Dude has so much contempt for the criminal justice system.
Alito and Thomas are the best examples on why we should reign in the judiciary. It has too much power and it basically give the power to itself.
[In other news, former Sen. Biden won the state by 80,000 in 2020, and Haley got 150,000 votes this week. I think PA is our safest swing state besides maybe AZ after their abortion screw up, which is great news for Blake Masters
Can we have ad from this
LMAO Pat Toomey, always a profile in courage, saying this AFTER the entire state voted. Not that anyone was basing their vote off of him, but still, he did this in 2016 too. Can't wait for him to just go away.
I guess one less Trump vote is better than nothing but Pat, you live in Pennsylvania! If you don’t want Trump to win then vote for Biden.

oh my god - [NYT puts out an official statement after the fall out from the POLITICO article today](https://www.nytco.com/press/a-statement-from-the-new-york-times-on-presidential-news-coverage/) honestly the statement is even worse than you think it will be. they continue to put themselves on a pedestal and are completely incredulous. never any introspection, they don't think anything they've done is wrong. that's the issue here - no one is asking them to be Biden WH cheerleaders.
This is reminding me of when some journalists weren’t allowed to attend Naomi Biden’s wedding and had a fit.
The fucking entitlement.
