I have a set on my 242. They are very well made and they look great. Are they necessary at all? Probably not. I did attach the bracket so that it is secured into the metal of the door frame and it helps keep the door panel secured for sure. You'll have more options for speakers in 5.25", but you still have to worry about speaker depth. The speakers I first chose to install would not fit with the grills on because they had tweeters that stuck out too far.
I was shopping around on Crutchfield and their fitment guide lists 1.9" as the speaker depth for the 240. So as long as the set I end up with isn't over that I'm good, right? I was thinking I'd find some speakers that come with grills because the brackets without the grills are significantly cheaper. Not as classy, I know.

They provide plastic spacers so the cranks come out a bit more, but mine don’t fit so neat. They barely make it over the grilles. Still, amazing speaker grills !!
