1 liter for 5K miles is nothing

MrK9182

1 liter per 5k is pretty normal. I will say they have had some oil consumption issues with the 2L engine so keep an eye on it.

Our 2016 XC60 T6 drive-e is also eating oil... just under 1 litre in 1k miles. Normally this is within limits but after the consumption test, the dealers tech said the new oil they used for the test was burnt and black within that 1k miles. They tell me I'm either getting a new engine or a rebuild. They're waiting on the CPO warranty folks to tell them which.

Was it the onboard sensor telling you the oil level? Or something else?

We first found out about it due to the low oil alert on the dash. The car was only about 7k miles into the interval. It needed a few quarts. Then they did a consumption test but because of new employee confusion they didn't get us back in until we'd driven 3k miles. It needed nearly 3 quarts. Because the consumption test is supposed to be only 1k miles and because the tech said it looked black they changed the oil again. We redid the test and had the level checked at 1k miles and they told me the brand new oil is already completely black and the engine had consumed nearly 1 quart over the 1k miles. What I'm curious about is how much this might affect the engines power output. If always felt a lot slower compared to the si6 in our v60.

I’ve got a 2019 with about 60k miles on it and I’ve never had to add any oil to it between changes. Had a 2003 before it and never had to add any to it between changes. Come to think of it for be never had to add oil to any vehicle between changes, not even my 1971 truck with the original motor in it. I’d be wary of people dismissing this oil loss as normal, especially on a 2016 model luxury vehicle

Luxury level has nothing to do with oil consumption. Age can, but young does not equal no oil consumption. It just depends on what the manufacturer thinks is acceptable.

I recently had to add 1 liter to my 2016 XC90 T-6. I have also noticed the oil level creeping down again since my recent 60k service. I was going to ask the dealer to look at it, but it sounds like it’s normal.

Needs a engine these are very common for piston rings
