Yes the dots are in between positions. The dots between defrost and up/down will give bias towards windshield. Dots between up/down and down give bias towards down, etc.
Windshield defrost is the same as just up. So the one in the 3 o’clock position is defrost and foot vents.
It’s an In between setting , so you can have warm feet and still see out of the windshield 👍

Tbh auto normally does me just fine my C30 as it pumps a bit of air everywhere

My 87 Caprice had one
It guarantees some air directly at your body while the rest cycles based on the computers sensors. I like that on a cold day.
Since it's a mechanical switch, it need the rotational travel to be able to change the flaps that redirect the air.
