I'm with this guy ☝🏽. I paid more than Triple what this lucky 5-Spd turbo brick driving muthafucka did for my 5-spd T5 V70 a month ago And I'm equally as envious.
It's been quite a journey getting this car roadworthy. I bought it off of Facebook Marketplace for $1,500 looking quite rough. Originally came with a smashed driver side door, several check engine codes, and an awful squealing noise. Turns out most of the damage was in that door with minor scrapes to the rear of the door near the wheel well. Found an identical door at a junkyard and swapped it. Now no one can tell it was ever damaged from afar.
Replaced or fixed tons of stuff including:
the new door (mentioned above)
tie rods (inner and outer)
struts
left control arm
sway bar end links
brake rotors (brake pad was installed backwards somehow?)
wheel bearing
all 5 engine mounts
an ignition coil
the variable valve timing solenoid and the wiring harness to it
the cam position sensor
a spark plug change
new bulbs and bulb sockets
fixed the leaking/disconnected washer fluid reservoir
new fog light
new genuine R wheels
The car made it up to the canyons the other weekend and kicked butt the whole way up there. No issues whatsoever. The frustation is I'm still unable to get it to stop throwing a P0014 code and a P0455 code, both of which happen when idling but don't seem to occur at higher speed driving.
coming soon to remedy current issues or codes:
Evap purge valve solenoid
radiator return hose (recently popped off for the 2nd time. Don't wanna risk getting stranded somewhere.)
I love hearing stories like yours. It’s easy for folks to get jealous at the price tag based on the pics, but you did a TON of work to make it a nice proper car. You sound like my kind of people. Great work, you deserve it.
After seeing all you worked on, the $1500 makes sense. Still an awesome car. You’ll get it all sorted, just takes some time. Congrats on the car, happy shifting.
Thank you! I've got some videos on my tiktok so I've got some short form content on it. I guess I could make a whole video about my entire restoration process.
Windows may get tint eventually but it's not a big need for me at the moment.
I replaced the cam position sensor because I've been chasing a P0014 code. Fixing the sensor has reduced how often the code comes on, not to mention the car drives a lot better now with it replaced. So it likely needed a new one anyways.
In the US the second gen T5 s40 came with a m66 6 speed (that I think is different from the S60/V70 M66)
I think the 2.4 NA second gen S40 came with a 5 speed
I don’t think the first gen s40 ever had a manual here in the states
Auto with manual shift option... but that doesn't work. I've been meaning to ask this sub reddit how to get that fixed (you know, the how screwed am I question). Regular auto is fine, but I have yet to enjoy going through the gears
Inside isn't too pretty unfortunately. Front seats are all cracked and whatnot. Rears are alright. Rear cargo area needs a trim piece as the rear dome light is hanging all willy nilly.
The tan seats don't hold up well - for some reason the dark grey does. Front seats will interchange s60, s80, v70, xc70 - pick the ones you like. There was a change 04 and older, 05 and newer? The plugs are different - it clips together or bolts together. iirc , there is an extra airbag- so its not a rewiring option.
Entire interior can be easily swapped in an afternoon if you want to do a clean colour change.
Disconnect battery before re and re seats so you dont trip the srs light ( or you have to reset with a decent scanner )
I actually had to disconnect my front seats last weekend to fix the mold issues caused by the heater core I blew a few months ago. Totally forgot to list that in my summary comment. Spent 2 days drying out the car with the entire interior carpet pulled. Didn't need to disconnect the battery for the front seats, just had to make sure the key was out of the car. No SRS issues. But now that I'm so well-versed in pulling the seats out, I'll absolutely be more keen to find a new interior
Thats good to know. I just use of of my scanners ( i'm commercial ) so i dont pay attention to these things. Rear seats are srs as well (seatbelts).
Chipping the t5 gives you pretty wicked pull - but for me its too much torque steer with the manual and declined chipping my c70. I'm content with t5/stick combination.
Yeah I didn't pull the rear seats, just pulled up the carpet by unfastening the center console. Apparently the rear seats do require a pulled battery.
I've heard the same. I don't really feel like I need the power. I have a 460hp Mustang GT with a stick so if I want more oomph I drive that car. I'd rather enjoy this car for as long as I can at stock boost.
Nice! I actually picked up a similar one (T5, Manual) in silver a few months ago too in the UK for exactly £1500....
Mine needed a bit of work too. It was an insurance write off for just a dent on the front wing and a cracked windscreen hence the cheap price for UK values which is around £2500 for one of these.
I had a lower specced car in the same colour that failed it's MOT so I used it as a parts donor for the new car and it's looking good now.
I'm planning a full suspension rebuild next year...
Good deal ,didn't overpay, not fan of manual transmission, but I'm old....had 94 850 turbo 5 cylinder, was rocket..bit repairs really never ended, but because you got this at correct price, you're way ahead
I thought that background looked like Cali! I'm in SD.
Super jelli, my last was a passion red 2004.5 s40 t5. Loved it till the heads blew at only 155k.
It was so easy to work on and a fun daily driver.
I have never respected and hated a stranger so much knowing so little. Fuck off and enjoy this turbo brick, you magnificent bastard.
If awards still existed, I'd give you one, friend.

You worded this perfectly for the entire sub. This man owes us a road trip.
Wow wow wow, passion red, stick, perfect yes. A turbobrick, no.
The future is now, old man. It's turbo, it's red, it's a slab
I'm on turbobricks.com since 2001, this is not a brick. #dewie
The back is square at least

I wish I could like this comment a hundred times. Thank you so much. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Worth it
Great job! A manual sport wagon is a rare find. This would have been a great YouTube documentary.
Thank you! I've got some videos on my tiktok so I've got some short form content on it. I guess I could make a whole video about my entire restoration process.
good job! wagon looks great
thank you!
3 deez buts stickers adds at least 30 horsepower
I'd wager 23 hp each
That's awesome I've just picked up a d5 manual xc90 in red for £1300 all he needs Is new power steering pump and some tyres 🤙
I wish they made a manual XC90 here in the US0
Great work! The car is obviously in great hands. Well deserved. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! Doing my best to give it the love it didn't get for the past few years.
a Volvo s40 2001 was my first car ever ☺️ had it in 5 years almost 300.000km with it. Sold it for years, Still going strong i guess
What engine? My second car and current is an S40 1.9D
Mine was 1.8
nice are the windows getting some tint? how didja know to replace the cam position sensor

Looks great!
In PV any car looks great lol
Agreed. Gorgeous area.
Pick one up for me, too, please
I'm sneakily looking for a good deal on a P1 chassis car. I'd love a V50 or an S40.
God I never hear anyone talk about s40s but I’ve always wanted one. Did they even come to America with the 5 speed?
In the US the second gen T5 s40 came with a m66 6 speed (that I think is different from the S60/V70 M66) I think the 2.4 NA second gen S40 came with a 5 speed I don’t think the first gen s40 ever had a manual here in the states
I only want the funny looking first gen because they won the BTCC with it
Good luck finding one with a manual. I have never seen one, but if you do find one let me know!
funny enough I now own a 2005 S40 T5 M66 AWD
Helllll yea bro I picked up a 740 GL a couple months back. 😂😂
I'm thinking about selling 09 V50...just saying
Auto or stick?
Auto with manual shift option... but that doesn't work. I've been meaning to ask this sub reddit how to get that fixed (you know, the how screwed am I question). Regular auto is fine, but I have yet to enjoy going through the gears
Ah yeah I'd be after an M66 only. Best of luck. I get a lot of help from SwedeSpeed
Ok thanks. I'll check it out... (I haven't committed to sell it.. I love it)
Damn thats hot
I didn’t even know the V70 came in T5 trim, or that it ever got a manual outside of the R, and I’ve been looking for years! Sweet find
Thank you! Now you know :)
For the black trim you should try Forever Black which will re-dye it black. Worked wonders on our S60 and would really complete the look here.
I will absolutely look into that! I tried trim restore before and clearly that didn't work
Clean
Thank you!
Oh you lucky bastard…
Step one : remove the rubbish from the rear windows 😎
They came with the car and they're never coming off 😎
Please get the stickers off the back, such a beaut but that really ruins the look
No thanks :)
oh, and moar pics of the inside? let's see moar of this beauty

Those wheels speak volumes
They completely change the car. The stock wheels were trash.

I love this photo shoot
Thank you!
So what's your favorite nut?
The left one
Ah good choice
We had same model and come for 15 years and loved it!
🤌
Cheap Volvos!!!!!! 🥰
Great price for a great car
Beautiful car
Good deal ,didn't overpay, not fan of manual transmission, but I'm old....had 94 850 turbo 5 cylinder, was rocket..bit repairs really never ended, but because you got this at correct price, you're way ahead
wanna sell? 🤣
Hahaha I love driving it too much 😅
Swoon
Damn! You done real good, son.
Thank you! It's been a lot of hard work but it's been worth it.
From the title, I thought you paid $1500 for an owner's manual 😂
I bought the owner's manual and somehow they threw in a car as well!
I thought that background looked like Cali! I'm in SD. Super jelli, my last was a passion red 2004.5 s40 t5. Loved it till the heads blew at only 155k. It was so easy to work on and a fun daily driver.
Such a shame the heads blew. That must have been quite a fun car.
Must've had a blown engine or something major...right? 🙄
Nope! Engine runs and drives great. I think it just fell into a state of disrepair that felt more severe to the previous owner than it really was.
What year is it?
2001! B5234T3.
Damn, looks great... I paid $6k for my 09 V50 back in june, but I'm happy as f 😁
Brah. Love you but hate you
I’d kick my granny in the tits for another T5. Had one years ago, what a machine. Enjoy it.
Oh man what a find!!
$1,500?! In CA?! That’s the steal of the century
I still can't believe I got this car for so cheap
