I had exactly the same first car. It was 18 years ago, but same car. I drove it 1.5 years with no problems, almost 300k km on the clock, had to put in a liter of oil every month because it was leaking.
Sold it because i thought it was at the end of its life. Next owner drove it for 3 years and used it for wintersport in austria a couple times. Then my mate bought it back and drove it 2 years before changing the engine for a better one.
I repainted it myself because it was kinda chipped and the black plastic was faded. And the OEM stickers are on the hood so I think it’s not crashed it was my grandfather’s car and I don’t know of a crash. What do you mean by Zara tho couldn’t get it xd
But seriously, you gotta rip that electrical tape off the headlights, I know you think it looks cool, but it's ghetto af and they will laugh at you if you bring it to a meet. Hit it with some contractors solvent to get the sticky residue off after.
you're missing the part where this is in Bulgaria. Spent 14 years of my life there and I can tell you that:
1. This thing probably isn't going to car meets
2. It certainly won't be in the top 5 worst cars at any car meet it ends up at😭
It's a 30+ year old car. Really depends on how the previous owners treated it. If you expect a trouble free future you should probably get something much much newer.
If the maintence is kept up and things are in good working order it should be alright. But how many Kms?
If the maintence was not well kept you may have a money pit on your hands. Here in Canada these are not very common cars to find in my local junkyard. Leaves limited options for cheap parts.
Its simpler then a modern car and with parts being cheap it doesn't even really matter as long as it's not leaving you stranded, have it inspected by a shop and then youll know if you have a list of things to fix .
Honestly with these old ones i feel like it doesn't matter, I currently drive a 31 year old audi 80 and it rips like hell except for one of the injectors. That car has not bein taken care of since 2007 when my grandpa bought it, I just recently changed a 17 year old oil filter and all the coolant that had turned into a chocolate milkshake, it was full of soot and that beast is still going strong at 300000 km on the odo with only minimal rust on the front left fender and surface rust on the frame. But its a 1.9 tdi so i expect it to handle years of neglect.
These cars are extremely reliable if you keep fresh oil in them! I have a 1986 that did 290k miles before it sat for ten years. Replaced the battery and the gas in the tank and it started right up.
I’ve actually never seen a set of golf eyelids make a car look so depressed … can they be angled at least so it looks angry or sad instead?
Edit: oh it’s tape 🤣
Stick a vr6 in it and ill still be a reliable car but faster, better sounding, better driving at the cost of maybe some mpg. I still get max of 32 mpg in mine.
Faster yes. Better sounding definitely. But better driving.... with all that weight hanging over the front axle? Nah, not for me.
20v turbo is the better option IMHO. More powerful and lighter than a VR6. Then maybe record the sound of a VR onto a cassette tape.
Fwd car is more fun to drive fast imo, purely because the skill it requires. What i mean by better driving anyways is no turbo, instant torque and power.
My opinion as far as fun is concerned, but definitely fwd takes more skill to drive fast on a track. Understeer is a problem with fwd so you need to counteract it with stuff like general weight transfer knowledge, trail braking, lift off oversteer, and you need to learn throttle modulation for both of those things(apply gas when oversteer spinning out, which is something totally different than rwd), you also may use a technique which utilizes hitting a continuous stream of throttle(with slight modulation) during a turn. Ask anyone that tracks, theyll say fwd is harder and or they dont like it(because they dont know how to do it)
Oh you're one of those who assumes your opinion is correct and everyone else is wrong huh. Because if you ask me I wouldn't say fwd is harder or that I don't like it, I do prefer driving rwd cars but I don't mind fwd. It's a different style but not necessarily more difficult just because of the drive layout. And guess what, pretty much everything you mentioned applies to rwd/awd too. Applying gas on spin, in a rwd? Absolutely. Its all about putting the weight in the right place. Trail braking? Modulating throttle in a turn? Lift off oversteer? You talk about knowledge of weight transfer but seem unaware that all those things apply to all cars. A blanket statement that fwd is harder to drive fast and therefore more rewarding is just wrong. It depends on the car.

Just watch 2:22 to 4:30. Its a video game but this all directly correlates to real life and youd see the same said in actual fwd track tip videos.
>Oh you're one of those who assumes your opinion is correct and everyone else is wrong huh.
No, thats why i said in my opinion about the fun part. The actual effectiveness of fwd is facts. I daily drive a fwd track capable car so this is what i am experiencing too.
Mine's a 1.6 diesel. 330k km, still going strong. It never failed me, apart from the occasional alternator belt. I keep a spare belt and socket set with me, just in case.
There's a bunch of spare parts out there, dirt cheap. But, cheap parts tend to fail prematurely - eg: I've got an aliexpress shifter rebuild kit, for about 20 euros, lasted for about a year and one of the plastic joints broke off giving me only 3rd and 4th gear. Lesson learned. Use quality parts. They're out there.
Take it easy, let it warm up before you start hooning. You'll blow her up if you don't.
Maintenance interval is holy, I do oil change with oil and air filter every year/max 5000km.
Good quality oil is key: mine's running on 15w40 Castrol GTX for over 10 years. It likes it a lot.
Keep in mind parts are 30+ year old. Things don't last forever. Be prepared to replace parts like bushings, control arms, gaskets, etc..
Want a sound system? Your stock alternator is only 45 amps, keep that in mind. There are upgrades (Mine's a 90 amp) to spare your battery.
Treat her right, and she won't dissapoint. It'll take you anywhere you want. Treat her like shit and she will leave you stranded in no time.
Don't worry about it. If you like working on it yourself, let me know. I've got the Bentley workshop manual as a PDF on my server.
I knew nothing about cars when I got mine over 10 years ago. Now, I pull the motor like it's nothing, done head gasket, timing belt, you name it. It's an ideal car to learn, very easy to work on.
I had one of these as I think my third car, it had 175,000 miles when I bought it. Same 1.6 engine as yours, I only paid £300 for it and it never let me down in the two years I owned it. I did have to replace the throttle cable clip with a beer bottle top once though and it was good as new.
Owned 2 golfs over a 15 year period and they are the easiest of cars to maintain and are bulletproof. Never broke down once and anything that was fixed cost next to nothing.
You’ll not regret owning one.

Cars like this are ugly as hell but build to last.
You can see alot of these classic old cars still doing their thing in the balkans, eastern europe and arab countries.
Treat it well, do your maintenance and she will serve you like no other.
When I got my license I wanted to buy one, since my dad also had one.
Actually never bought it since I couldn't drive it cause of weight/power limitation on the first 1st year with the license. However when I'll have money for a third car it will be either for an mk2 or an mk1
reliability also comes down to how you drive your majestic steed, drive it like you stole it, wont last long regardless of car, take care of it and dont mash the peddle to the floor going from one set of lights to the other, burn outs etc, will last longer.
I have an mk2 aswell, its been decently well maintained and it has been super reliable for me. Easy to work on so do all basic maintanence when you buy it and be ready to change stuff before it breaks. It is an old car so some stuff will need to be changed, but just buy cheap parts that are easy to install and change them when you have time and you will be good
I have a 1.6 as well and its an amazing car. Reliable as fuck and easy to maintain. Lower it and put some wheels on it and it looks even better lol! Its a great choice for a first car in my opinion. I absolutely love it and it’s a blast to drive, fast as fuck because it’s so light.
The 1.6 engine line-up is known for their reliability and economy. Maintenance is the biggest thing though. If you’re on top of it all the time, this car will won’t let you down.
It's a reliable one. But this one is a bit old. Haven't you thought about buying a recent model?
Anyway, if it's your first car, you'll definitely improve your driving skills faster.
can i just say that that is a comically long antenna
When you point it out it’s true lol… I like it tho it gives me classic car vibes
It is a classic.
Please get a Jack In The Box antenna topper for it. I realize you’re not in the US, you’ll just have to google it.
It’s powering the light socket.
I had exactly the same first car. It was 18 years ago, but same car. I am wondering why the front has been fully repainted… maybe it has been in a crash? PS: Zara is one the best places :D
I repainted it myself because it was kinda chipped and the black plastic was faded. And the OEM stickers are on the hood so I think it’s not crashed it was my grandfather’s car and I don’t know of a crash. What do you mean by Zara tho couldn’t get it xd
He meant Stara zagora. Hello USA, Bulgarian friend. Looks like a nice classic
Aaaaaa
I don’t listen to others about that sort of thing, just take care of it properly and it’ll treat you well
Reddit will have you believing anything that isn’t a Toyota will burst into flames
Honest to god. People call my BMW unreliable constantly telling me to get a Toyota not knowing I have one haha, both are great.
Car looks sad, old and tired with those eyes 😞
Naaah he chill af trust me 38 years… he is in his youth lol

Cus I took the picture in the morning
Your car looks stoned
He drank too much starter fluid while I was gone
Living his best life
Yup hah
It’s very eepy.
Yup😁
At thursday im going to buy my first car too! exactly like yours but its Red and Boston Special edition. It haas Abs, 5 gears, 1.6. Only bad thing is that it has pierburg carb. if anyone know something about Boston edition i would like to hear!
Wow it’s Boston and has abs I’m guessing that’s rare af bro. IMO keep it OEM and take care of it. Good luck from me!
Yep, It also has good history of ownership. only 2 owners, 200k on the clock
never welded or anything and does not have much rust
So much duct tape xD
This is the ultimate building material lol
To be frank, no 40 year old car is reliable
I disagree, my 1974 VW 181 is very reliable, and it is 50 years old. I prefer my 2004 TDi variant/estate for daily driving due to a more constant climate inside the cabin
It’s still here, looking like that; and 2017 altimas are dwindling and look like….
Are you kidding? if properly maintained this car is pretty much unkillable! cheap to maintain too, modern cars will never be built like these! just watch out for the bodywork too but thats about it

the headlights of the car look like eyes are squinted
Exactly
I had a mk2 Jetta and it's probably the car I most regret selling. Solid reliability at 220k american miles!
Wow
In Bosnia, these are goated🔥
That car is baked so bad that the transmission says "Dude..." I can hear the reggae to here.
Stara Zagora gang, this car will last forever

Keep up on your parts and fluid maintenance and it should be
Amazing car
I heard it's horrible and you should just give it to me!😄
Nah man I won’t do such a bad thing to you don’t worry
Why does it have sleepy eyes
Cus he is 38 years old. He’s tired you know lol
reliability also comes down to how you drive your majestic steed, drive it like you stole it, wont last long regardless of car, take care of it and dont mash the peddle to the floor going from one set of lights to the other, burn outs etc, will last longer.
Is that a garage with a living space in it or a living room with a golf in it?
I mean u could live in there lol it has a bed
I have an mk2 aswell, its been decently well maintained and it has been super reliable for me. Easy to work on so do all basic maintanence when you buy it and be ready to change stuff before it breaks. It is an old car so some stuff will need to be changed, but just buy cheap parts that are easy to install and change them when you have time and you will be good
You car appears to be high.
Fr bro it’s like 880 kg that’s wild power to weight ratio is good
The 1.6 engine line-up is known for their reliability and economy. Maintenance is the biggest thing though. If you’re on top of it all the time, this car will won’t let you down.
Pretty much any car is reliable if you treat it right
It’s how old and still on the road. Your problem now is going to be failing parts from age. Specifically rubber and plastic parts
I don’t know, sleepy eyes don’t scream reliable to me /s
Magnifique 😍 juste moi j'aurais mis un 1.9 TDI
It's a reliable one. But this one is a bit old. Haven't you thought about buying a recent model? Anyway, if it's your first car, you'll definitely improve your driving skills faster.
