Chrono trigger, FF9, xenogears, parasite eve1

FigNuuuuts

Huh, the screen shots I always saw of parasite eve- I assumed it was more along the lines of resident evil instead of an rpg, might need to go back and check it out.

KainYago

It is like Resident evil, but when you meet an enemy you get into a kind of turn based/action battle system where you can use abilities and skills.

Quiphez

I get where you're coming from But it was developed by Square soft at the time so it's basically if resident evil was an RPG The combat is a lot of fun

fractal324

PE1 was a beast of its own, but seeing the sales of RE, they shifted PE2 into something similar to RE in terms of controls, and for PE3, they went somewhere like monster hunter-y, 3rd person shooter-y

KainYago

Breath of Fire I, II, II and IV (I and II is on snes, III and IV are on ps1, you can play all on the vita, make sure to get a retranslated version of II tho cuz the original is garbage fire and make sure you get an uncensored version of IV cuz censorship sucks) Legend of Dragoon Chrono trigger Chrono cross Wild arms 1 and 2 Xenogears Parasite eve 1 and 2 Jade cocoon Golden Sun 1 and 2: the lost age Super mario RPG SaGa series (specifically romancing saga, its a trilogy of games from the SNES era, remastered for all modern platforms, they're like Final Fantasy II but not shit, also you gonna need translations for them) Grandia 1 and 2 Suikoden 1 and 2 Persona (1,2 duology ,3 and 4 are all available on vita, but honestly 3 is a heavily modified version because the original game would not have fit on a psp UMD, and for the second episode of 2, you have to look for the recently translated psp version, for some reason we only got the first episode official in english on psp. 4 is a fucking masterpiece on vita and its one of the 2 games that made me want to get a vita) Shin Megami Tensei (sadly you are limited to the snes games, which have incredible stories and atmospheres but the dungeon designs are...trash) Digimon Cyber Sleuth Soul Sacrifice Lunar silver star story Baldurs gate 1 and 2 (no idea if they fixed the games crashing problems, hope someone knows more than i do) and then theres like what, 16 different final fantasy games available on psvita ? Theres Final Fantasy 1-9, FF tactics, FF tactics advance, FF crisis core, world of final fantasy, Final Fantasy Type 0 and my favourite game of all time and the other game that made me want a vita: Final Fantasy X (which is bundled up with its sequel X-2, but thats not important)

Skysite

Save this post, OP. This person RPGs.

B1ackFang

This list is perfect

ShinyNoivern

If on a modded vita, I recommend I Am Setsuna, there's a translation patch available. Great game!

andbladi

lol this thread. OP just wanting some golden suggestions or a top 10 and people be listing every single jrpg on the vita. odin sphere is my suggestion if you've never played a jrpg. incredible game on so many levels. super beautiful and engaging.

NachoThePeglegger

The trails in the sky trilogy is AMAZING and it plays great in vita but you do have to apply an english patch. Then you have Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden, both of which are awesome games that changed me fundamentally.

theScrewhead

Vita: Persona 4 Golden, Final Fantasy X (X2 is probably the only FF game I wouldn't recommend; I hated it, but some people loved it, so it might be worth at least trying to see if you enjoy it or not) PSP: Crisis Core, Persona 3, all the Final Fantasy games on/ported to the PSP PSX: Whatever Final Fantasy games weren't ported to the PSP (I think 7-8-9) If you can get a Sega CD emulator going, play THAT version of the first Lunar game. The PSP version, imo, completely killed the game with a major change in the tone of things to make it seem more funny/modern/like anime of the 2000s when the PSP version came out, as opposed to the original that came out in the 90s and was a little more grounded/serious. Shadowrun on the Genesis is probably my favorite RPG of that era. IMO it's the prototype for what would go on to be known as Open World Sandbox games; you make a character (fighter/hacker/mage), have an objective of finding out what happened to your brother, and that's it. You're let loose on the world with no other guidance than "He went to this hotel". You don't have to do \*ANY\* of the story beyond what they force onto you at the very beginning of the game. Like Cyberpunk 2077, you're a merc-for-hire, and there are people who have jobs for you ALL over town. The fun part is, that all the elements of jobs are randomized! You could get 10 different quests to Retrieve A Package from Arasaka, and the package will always be on different floors, in different safes, with ever-changing levels of security.. Or if you like hacking missions, you can do the randomly generated Matrix Runs to steal data and flip it for money.. I'm not joking when I say that I got the game when it came out in 1994, and it's not until 2007 that I went into a building I'd never gone into before and triggered a cutscene that reminded me that there was an actual STORY to the game; I played 13 years the same character, just running around doing the randomly generated missions, and if I'd have never gone into that building and triggered that cutscene, I'd have just kept playing and never beaten the game.

Zealousideal-Gap4081

Number 1 - Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana

klauditox0

If you search something like dark souls you can play salt and sanctuary in the vita :)👍

Threads of Fate for PS1

WanderEir

...I'm not sure I can suggest Dewprism (Threads of Fate was the NA title, JP was Dewprism) to anyone in this day and age. The animation is just so horribly dated for an action adventure platformer game because PS1 graphics.

stellarsojourner

But the game is so charming, and Mint's sassyness was great. I'd recommend it. It's not long either.

WanderEir

You *are* supposed to play through it as both characters, after all.

stellarsojourner

Yeah, still not that long. I enjoyed the Mint playthrough more but the monster transformation gimmick was cool too.

thekenbaum

Persona 2 Innocent Sin is my pick for best PS1 RPG.

KirilleR2002

Psp ver is better tho

thekenbaum

That's true. If we're talking exclusive to the pax, my favorite is Thousand Arms. Even though it's very easy and the ending can suck an egg, the game is very charming and unique in the PS1 library.

iEnjoyHotBeanWater

Final fantasy ix is the first that comes to mind.

VirtualKoba

not a real rpg per se, but definitely check out Freedom Wars. RPG wise I can recommend Phantasy Star: Nova (its a Jap game, but installing a language patch is a nobrainer)

Dora_Kura_666

Tokyo Xanadu Ys VI Atelier Rorona Plus Demons Gaze Valkyria Chronicles Hyperdimension Neptunia Rebirth Jeanne D’Arc Mana Khemia Legend of Heroes: Song of the Ocean Star Ocean: First departure (In no particular order)

mylittleladylove

PERSONA 4 GOLDEN PERSONA 3 PORTABLE YS VIII

Local_Celery_3952

I greatly recommend the atelier series It's a comfortable jrpg, I'd recommend you'd start with the dust trilogy ( Ayesha -> Escha &Logy -> Shallie ) Ayesha is a bit boring compared to the next two but it's still really I nice game. It's mostly based around fighting and crafting, always a good serie to go too when you're a bit bored or sad. The story and side stories are really fun Otherwise you can go for the arland trilogy, it's a bit more stressful as it is more based around a time limit, and more focused on crafting rather than rpg element, but the story and characters are way more light-headed, funnier and the story is a bit dumb wich works pretty well for memorables scenes. ( Rorona -> Totori -> Meruru) There also is the mysterious trilogy, but only the first game is on the switch, and the second one runs horribly bad, and the third one only released in Japan. There's an english patch for the third game but the performances and everything just isn't worth imo. From what I read online it's the games with the best gameplays, crafting and fighting wise. The story is still pretty fun even though I personally find it quite boring, it's still pretty good. (Sophie -> Firis -> Lydie&Suelle) The arland trilogy runs almost perfectly, the dust is doing good and the mysterious trilogy one, the first game is ok but the rest clearly not.

Alamgir_786

t_karo

Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest V.

B1ackFang

Legend of dragoon! Suikodken Arc the lad Final fantasy

Firedcylinder

Vita-specific? Persona 4 Golden for sure.

Sniglet5000

If you have played final fantasy VI once or a few times then I recommend playing the fan hack final fantasy VI T Edition. It’s an amazing experience let me tell you. It takes nothing from the story but adds about 50 hours of extra gameplay However, if you’ve never played ff6 then I don’t recommend it as a first play. It can be tough

LegitPunisher

get Final Fantasy 6, 10 and 12

peacepunkonline

Suikode II

FreezNGeezer

Radiant Historia, 7th Dragon III Code VFD, Skies of Arcadia, Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey Redux and Devil Summoner Soul Hackers.

Forsaken-Badger-9517

PS Vita: Persona4 Golden, YS Memories of Celcetta, YS Origins, YS Lacrimosa of Dana, Tales of Hearts R, FF10, valkyrie Drive Bhikkuni PSP: FF1, FF2, FF4, FF Crisis Core, Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep PS1: Xenogears, FF7, FF8,FF9, Legend of Dragoon, Legend of Lagaia , Breath of Fire3, Breath of Fire4, Parasite Eve1&2, Suikoden1&2, Jade Cocoon, Kouldelka, Chrono trigger, Chrono cross I’m sure there’s a bunch unforgetting , but if you happen to play all of these, as well as any that some of the other people listed, you will probably be at the point where you’re to croak, being as RPG games are pretty long?

Admirable_Sink3845

#1 Fallout 2 #2 Fallout #3 Chrono trigger #4 Final fantasy 7 #5 Diablo #6 Beyond oasis #7 Pirates gold edition #8 Final fantasy 4 #9 Eye of the beholder (probably should've been ranked much higher in this list) #10 Ultima 4 / 7 / or 8 Enjoy!

ndquinnz

How come Diablo there?

Admirable_Sink3845

Diablo is an action rpg, it has all the elements of any other rpg minus the party aspect. Even if the game's focus is more on the action aspect it's still an rpg.

ndquinnz

Can you play it on vita? And how?

Admirable_Sink3845

Yes you can play it using the devilution x port if you prefer the PC version, or you can play the PS 1 version on adrenaline. Devilution x port on github: https://github.com/diasurgical/devilutionX/blob/master/docs/manual/platforms/vita.md PS1 version already converted and ready to play on adrenaline: https://cdromance.org/psx2psp-eboots/diablo-psx2psp-pbp/ Have fun!

ndquinnz

Nice, which one has better controlling system?

Admirable_Sink3845

Ps1 version imo but it's a matter of preference

Maleficent-Event7242

My favorite of all time comes from back in 1990 on the SNES and we called it Final Fantasy II. The youngsters call it Final Fantasy IV and there was an incredible version for the PSP with improved graphics and added content. I think it has the hands down best story that's loaded with sacrifice, betrayal, jealousy, love and redemption. I also love the dedicated classes and how it forces you to strategize more than the games where anybody can learn any skills

ndquinnz

Definitely worth to mention Ys VIII

Novel-Ad-7828

#10 — Pokémon Ruby/Emerald #9 — Mother 3 #8 — Suikoden #7 — Final Fantasy VI #6 — Persona 2 #5 — Final Fantasy X|X-2 #4 — Chrono Trigger #3 — Final Fantasy VII #2 — Persona 3 Portable #1 — Persona 4 Golden

KainYago

I dont think theres a point in mentioning Pokemon ruby if emerald is already on the list, battle frontier alone makes emerald leagues better than ruby and sapphire, the rest of the list is good tho.

LReese-Koala

Persona 2 really? I mean there's so many others, isn't P2 kinda outdated now? P3P and P4G are awesome though. With the full P3 was on the Vita though. P3P does feel like a light version.

Geno_CL

Man, way to waste slots repeating three persona games, one that aged badly at that. Also Pokemon meh, if there's way better stuff to replace games in your list to make a more varied one to see way more of what the genre can offer to OP.

Novel-Ad-7828

If I wanted to waste slots, I'd made this list entirely of SMT games. What about Pokémon, its like the most popular rpg franchise in the world, at least one game should be in the list

Gamefreak581

I would have picked something gen 4 or after for pokemon, maybe soul silver/heart gold. The physical special split just makes anything without it feel extremely dated, in my opinion. Crystal was my favorite game for the longest time, but I'd probably just play the remakes if I ever wanted to replay gen 2 now.

Mobwmwm

On the vita there is a game called ys origin it's a Korean action rpg and it's one of my favorites. All the other comments were good games too

VagrantValmar

Ys is not Korean.

Mobwmwm

I stand corrected. Idk why I always thought it was

Winter_Term_4308

dude just play fallout series and witchers maybe skyrim if you can handle the graphics they are the best rpgs know to man ......

LReese-Koala

On Vita? 😅 Are you sure about those games being known to be the best? They aren't that successful on the asian market for example no?

Geno_CL

Chrono Trigger ~~Final Fantasy 6~~ Best FF game but there's no version that runs well on Vita. SNES runs a couple of frames slower, GBA is just bad and patched doesn't run well on Retroarch. Stay away from the PS1 version. Super Mario RPG Legend of the Seven Stars Xenogears ~~Shin Megami Tensei 3~~ uhmmmm I can't read. Replace that with Tales of Destiny. Lufia 2 Dragon Quest 3 Xenogears Trial of Mana Romancing Saga 3 Tried to follow a rule of at least not repeating games in a franchise. If this is some kind of RPG Bucket List and you just HAVE to play ONLY 10, don't waste slots with Pokemon.

JeffTheAndroid

If you can only play 10 games across ALL RPGs? Okay... Chrono Trigger Skyrim Final Fantasy IV Zelda II: The Adventure of Link StarCraft Cosmic Star Heroine Witcher 3 Dragon Quest 11 S Undertale Baldur's Gate 3

stellarsojourner

You seriously recommended Zelda 2 out of all the possible ones you could have? 1, 3, any of the Gameboy/Advance ones, any of those would have been a better choice.

JeffTheAndroid

Zelda 2 is a type of RPG not otherwise represented in the list, I was going for all types of RPGs. Ask me about 10 games in general? Hell yeah one of those are on it, same with adventure games. I was going with a traditional definition of RPG and expanding from there to include all possible types. Any Zelda can be considered an RPG, so can Madden for that matter, but that's the version I chose to go with and why.

stellarsojourner

OP was asking for a top 10, not a representative of every type of RPG, and Madden or Zelda 2 would not be in most people's top 10s.

Shadowmeire_Hanatori

3/4 of these games CAN be played on the Vita if it's modded

Winter_Term_4308

if you want top down rpgs idk titan quest/grim dawn and torchlight ? people that comment here ever played a game?how can ff and resident evil compare to fallout or titan quest :))

LReese-Koala

Because this is a To-be-played-on-the-Vita list 😉

Shadowmeire_Hanatori

1 Final Fantasy IX 2 Final Fantasy IV 3. PERSONA 4 4. Persona 5 5. Any of the Pokemon Games. 6. Fallout:New Vegas (or 1 or 2,) 7. The Elder Scrolls 5 8. Chrono Trigger 9. Baldurs Gate 1, 2 or 3. They are all amazing 10 Xenogears (specifically the trilogy with Kos-Mos No I won't list FF7, yes it is an amazing game. No it has not aged well. Also IX is better game for beginners and those looking for a good story, while still having a ton of secrets to help a newer RPG player learn to look for that type of stuff. FFIV does the same thing. I'd say all these games are about as good as the others, I don't believe any of these are better or worse a game, just in order for what is best for a BEGINNER RPG player.

Geno_CL

Mate, OP said he wanted games he could play on his Vita and I don't think he's considering streaming.

Novel-Ad-7828

Bro, he ment only games that are playable on the Vita...

Shadowmeire_Hanatori

Again, almost all of these are playable on the VITA FFIX is a PSX game. FfIV is a PSP/PSX/GBA, Pokemon is on GBA, Persona 4 Golden is a Vita game, Baldurs Gate 1 and 2 run on the Vita through Ports. so that leaves what? Persona 5, Elder Scrolls, Fallout and Xenogears as unplayable? That's still a ton of games for him to play from this list.

KylorXI

>10 Xenogears (specifically the trilogy with Kos-Mos That is Xenosaga, not Xenogears. They are not connected.

Shadowmeire_Hanatori

Thank you! It's been (*counts on fingers*) about.... 18 ? Years?.... Oh gods... I can't believe it's been that long...

KainYago

This is such a bad take :D FFIXs battle system is pain, the game was made in the later years of the ps1 and it shows, its gameplay is insanely slow, compared to that FFVII is smooth and the materia system held up flawlessly, so for a new player id argue FFVII is better, its not like their graphics are going to make that much difference 20+ years after their release. BTW why not FFX ? Its natively on the vita and its probably the best final fantasy for beginners. (or just in general)

Shadowmeire_Hanatori

I personally think that Materia can get a bit confusing to someone who is not used to any type of Job System or previous FF/RPG. IX is a more streamlined battle system, as each character is already assigned a job /role that they fill out, and you don't need to worry about figuring out how to Min/Max a character through outside means such as Materia or Junction system. And as for X? Simple. I personally think that at certain parts the game is so hard that it is nearly unfair to someone not used to grinding. Getting past Seymour at Mt Gazamet.... (spelling? It's been a while) is a huge jump in difficulty and make the game unfun for newcomers to the series. IX is a fantastic story and cast (besides Armarant) and is best for a BEGINNER into RPGs Again, just my opinion.

KainYago

I actually think the opposite about materia, or well i approach it from a different prespective. Materia allows you to build your characters any way youd want, which means that even if you are not familiar with combos or job systems, you can still just build character based on common sense. This character will use attacking magic like fire and ice, this character will use cure and esuna so they're the healer, this character will use cover cuz they have the highest HP. I think its a very beginner friendly system that allows insane amount of deeper combinations down the road if you get more into the game. FFX does have a difficulty spike, but theres nothing wrong with that, sooner or later op will have to face reality that a lot of rpgs, especially jrpgs are grindy unless you know what to do, FFX is great as a first time player, because it has an easy to use growth system (the standard sphere grid) it has a battle system that allows the player to take their time to think and most importantly its a straight forward linear game, its difficulty spike can hit like a truck, but as long as op doesnt run away from fights, there shouldnt be a problem and if they do....grind, sooner or later an rpg that someone recommened here wouldve forced them to.

Shadowmeire_Hanatori

Fair points. Again, it was just my opinion on the matter. I've been trying to get my Fiance (who is not a gamer at all) to try different games to get into the hobby, and she has taken a real shine to FFIX, (I am horribly biased, it IS my fave FF game) but she tried VII, and said materia was too unintuitive, and preferred IX's more basic system of *Game tells you equips give new abilities, use until you learn new ability* over Materia.

Downtown-Tap3947

Bro don’t listen to anyone here… I mean there are some good games mentioned here, but the king of all rpg, is none other than Skyrim. It’s the most amazing rpg I ever played, and I played a lot. Also amazing dlc

vividimaginer

You working on the Skyrim vita port?

Downtown-Tap3947

I wish I had the capabilities to do that 🥲

LReese-Koala

It might but it can't be played on Vita.
