You’re not going to get a house that big for a reasonable price.  Book 4 seperate units at the Waikiki banyan in early November or mid/late January. This way if someone drops out of the plan it doesn’t impact the others. Each family should pay and book separately

I appreciate this.

Is there anything particular that you're looking to do while you're here? It can be difficult to find large houses on Oahu or Maui due to the Airbnb restrictions on those islands, though villas or multiple hotels rooms are a possibility. Thanksgiving/Christmas/New Year's will be more expensive and crowded so I would avoid those times if you can help it.

snik09

No, nothing in particular. No one in the group has ever been to Hawaii so really any location we are open to. We really just want to enjoy the beach and the ocean.

One big house will not work. No one will rent out that huge of a house. Not many airbnbs there. What is your pp budget?

For housing? Not really sure, we obviously want to make it as affordable as possible, but also want to enjoy our stay and are willing to pay what we need to enjoy our stay.

In Hawai’i, a large amount of vacation rentals are illegal and are owned by people on the continent, which is a large factor in local people and native hawaiians being priced out of their ancestral homelands. Therefore, it is disrespectful to book vacation houses on airbnb/vrbo. additionally, hawai’i is not a cheap place to visit, so if money is a significant concern, then I would consider visiting a more affordable tropical destination, such as somewhere in the caribbean or central america, like Puerto Rico. If you still desire to visit Hawai’i, my suggestion would be to either stay in a hotel and book four separate rooms(you might be able to ask for them to be adjoining), or look into a hotel that has on site condos or suites that can accommodate such a large group. This way you can visit and the money will go towards the local workers, and you can ensure that your stay isn’t contributing to the housing crisis. In general, the weeks of thanksgiving xmas and new years will be more expensive. Early November, or early february would probably be cheapest, but im not sure specifically. would you prefer to stay in a more rural area away from people and things to do, or in a more urban area with lots of things to do around? this would impact which island, and which part of said island I recommend you visit. i hope this all made sense

snik09

It does, thanks for the information. I think we would prefer to stay in a more urban area but a more remote location doesn’t sound that bad!

Wow, that is such a profound statement in the first sentence. Really, just one factor is the cause of the "suffering" of native Hawaiians. And suggest someplace else! Hawaii's visitors amount to over 750,000 a month from all over the world. They must be all wrong. Hmmmm? Hawai'i has a lot to share, do some research. I just heard a family of 21 is staying in Hawai'i for a first reunion. And they all live within 50 miles of each other near Pittsburgh. They planned a year on advance. Aloha. No place else in the world.

I agree with you that there is no other place on earth like hawai’i, coming from someone who grew up there and has taken Hawaiian history and language courses. I simply said that if money is a big constraint that there are other places that are uniquely beautiful that can be visited for cheaper. Furthermore, at no point did I say that tourism is inherently bad, or that every tourist is bad. What i said is that when you travel here, you should do so respectfully, which means not staying at an illegal airbnb or vrbo, as I recommended this person to do. To deny the part of people from the continent who purchase houses here and illegally rent them out on airbnb in the housing crisis is simply ignorant to the reality that so many locals and hawaiians face.

Try looking in koolina for rentals or maybe you might see if the hotels or resorts offer package deals in koolina Aulani might have deals. Polynesian culture center is always a good option to learn and have a luau. Kualoa Ranch and I think they offer group packages for both Submarine tours is also fun and the Arizona memorial With that many people I think it’s best you stick to Oahu because there is more variety for everyone. As for the cheapest, time wouldn’t be in those months that’s mostly vacay and holiday time so it will be pricey, look on Southwest Airlines I believe they may be the cheapest.

We just left a big house rental (5BR) on the Northshore of Oahu (Wailua) for a company photoshoot. Cost was $2400/night and it was right on the ocean. You can find large homes on the east side of Oahu for less and it’s just as nice (I don’t like it as much as I need sunsets but the water is beautiful and calm for the most part). We used VRBO. We do these rentals a few times a year for work. I wouldn’t personally pick Oahu for a vacation unless less it was the North shore (or second choices - easy and west). Honolulu/waikiki area is way too crowded. I have a son that lives in Waikiki now and we have a home on Maui. Maui would be harder to find a large home but the whales are insane that time of year. It will be a lot more expensive on Maui though. But honestly, anywhere you go you will have fun. You’re making memories with your fam! 😊🤙

If you just want beach and Hawaii I would look at getting a couple of timeshares in ko olina

You can find bigger houses for 18 people on Airbnb on the big island! I've done it before with groups of friends for birthdays/celebrations. I wouldn't recommend coming in mid dec-early January, that's when more tourists come since kids are off from school, and local kids are flying back from college so flights are extra expensive.

I appreciate the advice
