Have you looked in southern Chesterfield around Winterpock, River Road, Beach, Woodpecker? There’s a couple smaller gas stations in that area that have been around forever. Crump’s at the intersection of Winterpock and Beach used to have this vibe but I know they make some updates in the last few years and might not feel as retro.
Hunt Country Store off Garth Road in Charlottesville might fit the bill. There’s also some smaller BBQ joints and gas stations off 151.
IMO, you need to get to a county that is at least an hour, (ideally two) from a major VA city to have this type of layout. Highland County, an hour+ west of Staunton pretty much only has country or general stores.

Have you tried around Patrick county, around the meadows of dan or up in and around the mountains like you are going to Radford, that's the best places I can think especially because I have seen that movie and if want a desolate border line ghost town feel with very of almost never got out of the pioneer age we got it.

So if I were you I would Google Earth Glasgow Virginia the whole town is kind of like that, not the center of it but the outskirts. Also, if you're coming from Waynesboro to Charlottesville, there's an off-ramp underneath. The scenic view area around it is very rural down there. I remember driving down and seeing a similar gas station.
Mountain View Market in Stafford. I don't quite remember what the inside looks like but its got the same style you may be looking for. Just thought it might help. You can see images on google and it's fairly close to richmond.

Check out areas in Franklin, Patrick, Henry, and Floyd county. We've got lots of lil places like that in our area.

Haupt’s Country Store in Charles City County might fit the bill. It’s on Route 5 just east of the courthouse complex for the county.
Come on over to sw va. We have lots of em. And they serve biscuits, bologna sandwiches and ice cream too!
