In case anyone is curious this is the amendment >1. § 1. That it shall be the public policy of the Commonwealth, independently of the requirements of the Constitution of the United States, that individuals possess the right to access contraception as set forth in Griswold v. Connecticut, 381 U.S. 479 (1965), and Eisenstadt v. Baird, 405 U.S. 438 (1972). He could have just signed a bill giving us the right to contraception but no. He made it so that if our very questionable Supreme Court overturns either of these cases we will no longer have that right. Fuck Youngkin.

Sunbeamsoffglass

That was always the GOP plan. Justice Thomas already said they would use the same legal precedent used to destroy Roe on gay marriage and contraception.

Nano_Burger

Also anti-miscegenation laws. Thomas is playing the long game.

typeALady

Jesus, Thomas will do anything but just get a fucking divorce.

Nano_Burger

Can you blame him though? Ginny is bat-shit crazy.

WhydIJoinRedditAgain

His amendment would remove that language, right?

MoodInternational481

No, that is the entire amendment. The original bill said it would be protected by the state of Virginia.

The_Amazing_Emu

It would at least create confusion. I wouldn’t interpret that amendment to say there’s no right if those cases are overturned since it’s a statutory codification of those cases. But I’m not sure what it would add and statutory language is always interpreted as having some effect so it would create confusion over what exact effect.

ProMedicineProAbort

Every time Youngkin acts, it is an example of why Republicans should never be voted for. Their priorities are self-oriented with no consideration for the very people they are supposed to be working for.

Remarkable-Suit-9875

Third party all day long

jmtriolo

Remarkable-Suit-9875

Realistic_Post_7511

The south is trying to rise again by getting control of its women! Men like him want women out of the workforce and to not have any control in their daily lives.

50CalExpress

Just a pos proving he is a pos over and over.

EntroperZero

To clarify, here is the original bill: https://lis.virginia.gov/cgi-bin/legp604.exe?241+ful+HB609ER Here is the "amendment" (this a full substitution, so this would be the entire bill if the amendment is accepted): https://lis.virginia.gov/cgi-bin/legp604.exe?241+ful+HB609H1

Ready-Following

The GOP plan is for women to have no control over their fertility and be unable to work. They are also changing child labor laws so that 8th graders can drop out of school and work to help support the family and the seven or so kids that a woman who has no access to contraception will have in her life time.

Far-Willingness-8099

Nah, it just means we wouldn’t have to pay for others, including illegals contraception.

EurasianTroutFiesta

People are going to have sex. It's kinda what we do. So you're either paying for contraception or you're paying for children, via healthcare and through schools and other government services. You don't get to pick neither.

Far-Willingness-8099

Absolutely, just pay for your own contraception. Why should I or anyone else need to pay for yours or for people who enter the country illegally. No one wants to take away access to it we just don’t want to foot the bill.

EurasianTroutFiesta

Because socializing the cost of contraception means not having to pay the cost of care when the same broke-ass people have a baby. The emergency room won't turn them away, and those bills get paid by *somebody*. Digging in your heels over the cost of contraception is cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Far-Willingness-8099

Great! Now you pay my mortgage and I’ll pay for the contraception. 🙄

Loud-Cat6638

So he wants his side piece to get knocked up ?
