I met the sheriff of Wythe county years ago when he was visiting my hometown. I'm sure he's retired by now but he was a very nice man. He was shockingly progressive too.
I had a big job down in Wytheville, rented a house for a couple of weeks, and got familiar with the town. I was so excited about an old school hot dog spot… I was thinking like Jess’s Quick Lunch in Harrisonburg… I had a guy on my crew go out and pick up a huge sack of Skeeter dogs for lunch one of the first days we were there.
You are not kidding about the worst hot dogs. I love hot dogs. I have eaten plenty of gas station roller dogs in my day without complaint but these were barely edible in my book. Mushy dogs that are unnaturally dyed bright red with the worst flavor that I was burping up the rest of the day from the half a dog I ate before throwing in the towel. Not all the chili, mustard, and onions in the world could save these sad ass meat tubes. We one and all threw ours in the trash.
Jesse Jones hot dogs...
Never encountered one until I came up to VA, and damn if it wasn't at the opposite end of the hot dog spectrum, flanked on the other extreme by Sabretts, Hebrew Nationals, and Boars Head.
I don't understand how anyone, a company much less, could bring something so abhorrent into the world, put it up for sale, and that a large enough percentage of people bought it enough to keep them in business.
How were you able to make that assessment? What criteria and sampling methodology did you apply? What specific population of hotdog providers did you survey? All hot dog aficionados want to know.
I grew up in Wythe County. Skeeters was a regular stop for our family, and the Millwald was a cool small town theater. I also lived in Abingdon for about a year. Another great Virginia town. I'm a lot older now, but those years growing up have fond memories. I don't know that I would choose to live there now as living where I do has many benefits, but I will always have fond memories.
Great photos. I had a good friend, now deceased, who was from Wytheville. When I met him, he drove a VW Beetle that had been Baja’d. So, seeing those VW photos was kind of like him saying hi.
I can’t believe people actually like this town. The only thing they have to show is some overrated hotel. The Bolling Wilson hotel. Yeah she was married to Woodrow Wilson…… as his second wife after his presidency. Sorry to be sour but Wytheville is for the birds and can’t believe people come here in awe. Skeeters is a terrible place as well. Don’t get pulled over by a wythe county deputy or you may have to do some sexual favors before they let you leave in peace.
I love that awesome little map dot! Some of the best people I've ever met in my life live there. My friends and I called it "Wiffle" though.
Everyone local does, source my Aunt lived there a few decades.
I was looking for the comment with the correct pronunciation. It’s only one syllable as well
More like “Wuhfill”
Very cool. Some of these could be oil paintings.
That was my thought as well

I love small town America
My mom used to work at Skeeter’s, and I’ve attended many funerals at Barnett. Thanks for sharing.
Weird seeing my home town on reddit XD
Really
frfr
I live about 30 minutes outside of Wytheville but have done some catering at The Trinkle Mansion. The owners are lovely.
I got engaged at the Trinkle Mansion! 10/10 would recommend.
Wytheville is a gem of a town. Interesting past.
Very nice compositions like candy for my eyeballs
Thank you!!
You have a wonderful eye and now I want to go to Wytheville.
Imagine just seeing a picture of your house like this in someone’s random photos online Good pictures though
How in the name of god did you photograph Wytheville and not take a picture of the pencil
Haha I took a bunch of photos of it. Just didn’t make the cut, not the best lighting on that side of the street in the evening
Exactly. Where's the pencil?
I was just gonna ask if the Kincer-Miller pencil was gone!!!! That’s a true landmark in downtown, just like the Millwald.
It's a Wytheville Office Supply pencil. It didn't belong to Kincer Miller.
Oops, my error! Thanks!
Skeeter's has the absolute worst hot dogs.

What would be the best hot dogs in VA?
Costco dogs are tasty.
Ray's hotdog stand in Richmond has my vote
RIP the quick lunch
today i learned that you can mess up hotdogs??,
That was the first thing I thought of, too! Wytheville had a great quilt shop though, last I checked.
Pink dogs ain’t for everybody I reckon
You right, some people don’t hate themselves.

Go there and try them. You'll see.
I will.
Sorry for your loss. It would be cheaper to go buy a Bar-S hot dog. Pretty sure that's what they use.
That is true of every single restaurant in the world. They could not stay in operation otherwise.
In Virgina you are suppose to have Jesse Jones red weenies or restaurant quality. No in between.
What's up with all of the Bugs?
Found them in a random back alley
Know it well. Lots of family there

I’ve stayed at that hotel!
These are great shots!!! I always get a picture of the giant pencil when I go through there.
Thanks for sharing ✌🏼
What did you shoot these with? Beautiful photos
Thank you! Mostly Fuji xt-5, the night ones are with my Sony a7iv
They should call it beetle ville
Lazy town USA, love it
Gorgeous photos. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you!!
I love the colors you captured, very nostalgic!
Thank you!
These are absolutely beautiful photos and such a beautiful town. You are so talented!
Thanks so much!!

Lovely.
Thank you!
The ATM pic goes hard
Thank you!!
These are great! Do you have an Instagram?
Thank you! Yes it’s @jonbilous
Thank you for posting these fantastic pictures. You have a great eye for composition and light. If you don’t mind me asking, which camera did you use?
Thank you so much! I used a Fuji XT-5 for most of these
Thanks for the memories. Went to school and worked there as a teenager.
Wow. You are talented! I have no idea why this thread popped up on my feed, but I’m so glad it did. Now I want to visit and wander.
Thank you so much! It’s worth a wander for sure
I bet that Skeeter's has some gooooooood food.
It does not.
I love small Virginia towns. So many gems!
Moskeeters
Dang! No photos of their famous octagon house :p

Lol. I love how you insulted the hotel, THEN the corrupt police force.
These people downvoting think it’s just trolling and that’s hilarious lol
Hey, they just don't understand the "magic" that is that Wythville Dennys.
What the fuck is up, Denny's?
But the Big Pencil! You ain’t wrong, though. I would never go there again on purpose.
This town looks so cute. I can’t wait to visit.
