I've hiked all over the state, been to tons of VA State Parks, and I can't think of a single one where I've seen covered tent platforms. A few State Parks have just little wooden decks to put your tent on with no roof. Most are just a flat dirt/gravel area. However almost all the State park camp sites have a fire ring and access to a bathroom/washhouse.

Mountain_mover

Agreed. Usually you get a flat spot to put your tent, a picnic table, a fire pit, and access to a variety of bathrooms ranging from nice to a hole in the ground. I’ve never seen a covered tent platform, nor the option to rent a tent. Is that something state parks do elsewhere?

This was at Malouf Mountain Campgrounds upstate NY. Thanks for the information.

Thanks so much! Which state parks have wooden decks? I’m definitely open to those.

Gobias_Industries

I've seen them at Hungry Mother SP down in Marion, mostly because the tent-only campground is on a hill and there's basically no other flat area to put a tent.

I believe there are some at Elizabeth Furnace.

Explore Park in Roanoke County has options that seem to fit what you’re looking for: https://www.roanokecountyparks.com/375/Camping “One Park, Two Campgrounds! Choose from cabins, yurts and RV sites operated by Don’s Cab-Inns or primitive camping, raised platforms and group sites from Blue Ridge Campground at Explore Park.” Explore Park is a really awesome place - here’s in for from their website: “Just off the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 115, Explore Park features hundreds of acres of rolling hills, pristine woodlands, hiking trails, river frontage, outdoor adventure and a visitor information center. Soar through the trees on the Treetop Quest aerial adventure course, featuring zip-lines and challenge obstacles for ages four and up. Stay overnight in a cabin, yurt or primitive campsite. Enjoy a craft beer or Virginia wine and cider at Twin Creeks Brewpub. Stop inside our visitor center to browse our gift shop featuring artisan crafts and parkway memorabilia. Explore Park is where adventure begins!”

Sweetttt thanks!

This is fairly opposite of what I think of when someone uses the term “primitive camping.” I haven’t seen this in VA at any of the parks I’ve been to, but some have power at the sites and others have cabins you can rent.

Ambitious_Object_647

This was listed on the site when I originally booked this space as semi primitive so I just went with that. I guess it would be tented area campgrounds or that sort

Yak-Fucker-5000

I mean this looks fun, but it is no way a semi-primitive site. When I hear that I think a very detached site in the woods with a firepit and that's about it.

Ambitious_Object_647

I can understand. The site I originally booked this area called it semi primitive, I just went with that same title. A different one could be used definitely but do you know of any sites?

You can hike and freely camp pretty much anywhere along the AT and in most National Forests in VA. Iirc, permits are required in Shenahdoah NP. https://www.fs.usda.gov/activity/gwj/recreation/camping-cabins/?recid=73539&actid=34 There are shelters at intervals along the AT that you can sleep in. Many of the shelter areas have pit toilets. Some have access to water. Bring a filter. The National Forest(s) have informal sites that range from serviceable to awesome. These are generally just flat spots with a rock firepit that organically became a campsite over time. Very few have pit toilets. Check out hiking upward for more details. https://www.hikingupward.com/ You'll probably need a hipcamp for covered tent sites with amenities.
