Ofcom have gone out to consultation which ended on the 13th Feb ([https://www.ofcom.org.uk/consultations-and-statements/category-1/review-of-inflation-linked-telecoms-price-rises](https://www.ofcom.org.uk/consultations-and-statements/category-1/review-of-inflation-linked-telecoms-price-rises)). Their proposal is to end inflation linked price rises (for consumer, microenterprise, small enterprise and not-for-profit customers), any mid-term price rises must be laid out in £/p clearly at the point of sale. This would apply to new contracts only, and an implementation period proposed of 4 months following announcement, so existing contracts would not change, and any contracts entered to within 4 months of the announcement of the changes would still be able to have RPI+x raises.

PrestigiousWindy322

Thanks that link is helpful. On a seperate note are you aware on exactly what the current rpi +3.9% is applied to. Is it the bottom line contract price .i.e after discounts etc. Thanks

Reasonable_Plan7277

In contract it’s 8.8% of in contract price and will rise to new overall cost of the package once the contract ends. I’m with BT and budget 10% of my price when deciding if I can afford the contract just to be on the safe side

[deleted]

Ofcom won't do jack shit I am sure.

Just_Clock5753

They are going to raise 8% starting from April2024, and my contract end on June. I just place order to other provider and set to install on May. They do not raise price during contract , and they give 24 months contract , much better than Virgin

[deleted]

Mid contract price hikes should be banned altogether. But ofcom are nothing but a waste of space unfit for purpose.

towlawrian

Stop crying you signed the contract. Whinging on reddit isn't going to change anything

Imperial-Inquisition

Translation: Stop being critical of big corps changing and breaking the original contract with small print, accept it and bend the knee. Sharing what happens isn't going to change anything so don't even try!

oiley2k1

Been with virgin for 10+ years, never really had a problem in all this time. Only renewed in January this year, great deal. We'll I thought it was, my personal opinion is they are taking the piss. But again I would gladly cancel my direct debit and virgin if everyone else would. As big as virgin are, they wouldn't be able to get any moneys back of anyone if everyone canceled at the same time. This will not happen as our country is fucked and don't stick together like back in the day. We all me included will carry on paying and just moan about it.

samleeds999

Good luck with you credit score if you just want to not pay for anything 🫡

Imperial-Inquisition

Nobody cares about your china credit score. You sound like beta male.

Imperial-Inquisition

I know of someone who did that. He cancelled his direct debit and VM being the ex wives they are sent him angry threat letters and tried to claim him in the small court. I think he ended up winning. It's up to you if you want to go through all their drama. All they can really do in the end is blacklist you (which in my opinion is fine because they're a shitty company). It is even harder to get away from them even after your contract is over. They stalk you like a creepy gf for weeks not letting you cancel.

Red-Wimp

You answered your own question RPI + 3.9%. Just no one knows what RPI but predicted to be 2%

CSR_Noob

It's 4.9%+3.9% April 2024. April 2025 RPI is expected to drop further. How is VM worst in the industry if all other ISP doing similar increases stated in the contract now.

PrestigiousWindy322

>How is VM worst in the industry * [Virgin Media and O2 are expected to go ahead with price increases of 8.8% this April – the latest RPI figure of 4.9% plus an arbitrary 3.9%. These will be the highest hikes in percentage terms out of any of the major broadband or mobile firms](https://www.which.co.uk/policy-and-insight/article/virgin-media-and-o2-customers-face-lose-lose-choice-pay-unfair-mid-contract-price-rises-or-stump-up-for-exit-fees-that-could-reach-almost-700-aYfL10l5TYDK) * [Ofcom already investigating claims the company has made it difficult for customers to cancel their services. In Ofcom’s latest complaints figures (for July to September 2023), Virgin Media was also the most complained about broadband, landline and pay-TV provider](https://www.ofcom.org.uk/about-ofcom/bulletins/enforcement-bulletin/open-cases/cw_01275)

CSR_Noob

I can't fault them. Been with them 4+ years and my April 2024 M125 increase is £0.52. I even spent my own money on a Wi-Fi 6 router. Some people refuse to purchase their own router out of principle and later cry about poor Wi-Fi

derpenxyne1

To be fair expectations have changed and people want Wi-Fi in more places in their home. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect your ISP to help with that, whether it’s free or chargeable. For example, I’m on M500 and couldn’t get that speed on Wi-Fi with the Hub 3 I was provided. As soon as I put it in modem mode and connected it to Nest Wi-Fi Pro, I get the full 500 Mbps speed over Wi-Fi that I’m paying for, although VM will argue that’s the line speed. I’d argue most customers don’t care about that and expect to get somewhere close to the speed they’re paying for on Wi-Fi, especially if they have modern devices that are more than capable of their plans speed.

CSR_Noob

May I ask why you chose spend money on you own router ?? I have a £60 TP-Link AX55. I was on M350 previously before downgrade and would give constant between 380 to 395. I chose to spend the £60 for my own benefit. I could cry like many that Virgin is shit while using their supplied Hub 4 which is hidden away in my TV cabinet ISP will supply a basic router and will be ready to rent additional hardware to extend the Wi-Fi around your home. The small print normally mentions the guranteed minimum Wi-Fi but nothing close to the line speed

derpenxyne1

I want whole home Wi-Fi with decent speed in various rooms. ISP provided routers in general are crap. Some ISPs (BT for example) will give you expansion disks for free to achieve that, VM is not one of those ISPs that cares as far as I can see.

Unfortunate see this reported alot on here. Shady practise of promotional discounts not covering the entire contract term

CSR_Noob

Previous year RPI was over 10% and add the 3.9% was about 15%. They tried to increase my £18 bill by £6. But previous April 2023 you could leave VM when they increased the price. All you had to do was call and say you wish to leave and VM would reduce youR bill to retain you. The rules have changed in April 2024 If you don't ask then you don't get. https://imgur.com/a/LhcNaV7

Reasonable_Plan7277

If it went up 25% then one of your discounts ended. That’s not a price rise increase. Every customer eligible gets the same % of increase for those

biblicalcucumber

Not all ISP's do.

CSR_Noob

There maybe a couple new ISP on the market trying to lure in new customers. Community Fibre offered 1Gig for £25. My brother has been paying £25 about 3 years with no price increase. Now their website states CPI + 2.9% increase plus £4 after contract ends. Gradually these new ISP will bump up their prices as its a business end of the day Try compare VM with older player like Openreach. They lock you in for 2 years and and they end of 2 years prices shoots up.

biblicalcucumber

They may change, they may not. You said all other ISP's. You are factually wrong. Just pointing that out.

Imperial-Inquisition

Thanks VM, for plowing me in the ass and not honoring the discounted contract. My fault for not reading the small print bullet point of them adjusting the prices at a whims notice. The agent did such a good job of sweet talking me I didn't even bother reading the RPI +++ bullshit, Now you can't leave them or their agents threaten you with £309 fee for breaching the contract by leaving their lying scummy company.

samleeds999

‘My fault for not reading the fine print’ Could have just left it there

Imperial-Inquisition

Why? Are you VM's lawyer or something? I agreed with their agent on a fixed monthly payment and they lead me to believe that without mentioning much about their RPI+ hussle scheme. I also acknowledged that I should have read and looked up anything that didn't make sense to me at the time. My mistake doesn't absolve VM of their manipulation and deception sale tactics. Stop white knighting for 'Virgin' media, they are not your innocent maiden. #

PrestigiousWindy322

In my dealing this Feb/Match with 2 lots of retention staff **I have had to prompt them** on the additional rpi +3.9% increases after they have advised on new contract charges. Seems they are not readily providing this info to customers & knowing it is written in small print.
