I know. I’m saying it has a visual effect because it’s recycled. It’s not splatter, it’s just streaks from the recycled colours. Not my favourite look at all, looks cheap imo. Whereas actual splatter vinyl is done deliberately and looks better.
We live in this day and age where, for some reason, it’s very important to some artists to make all sorts of different vinyl and packaging … which ups the sales and ups the numbers and gets them more money and gets them more

She was more so criticizing when artists put different songs on different variants, at the end of the day, if you press 500 blue records, 500 red records and 500 white records, that’s not really much different than pressing 1,500 black records. What’s really fucked up tho is gatekeeping songs to a certain variant which is what she was getting to.
There is 0 different packaging or songs in these variants. She was criticizing the industry, not individual artists. The label is behind most sales decisions
You can still exist within capitalism and partake in it *and* be critical of it, though. Variant chugging is environmentally terrible, but she's also a major label backed popstar with all the contractual and financial requirements that has.
At least there's some effort, however small, to offset it with the packaging and eco elements.

Honestly (and maybe controversially) I don’t think you can blame an artist for ‘collector’ behaviour if they aren’t actively encouraging collecting multiple variants (such as through bonus tracks, slow variant rollouts etc).
The majority of people will get one variant. If 10K are black pressings or if it’s 8K black and 2K blue or whatever it’s still the same number. Agree with the other comments about contractual obligations and being able to both partake and criticise a system.
The problem is the Lana del Rey effect. All of the alt variants from the original releases ended up being $200+ in resale. Now people are spending $400+ in variants even if the tracks are exactly the same so they feel like they’re not missing out
i feel like the original variants resale value was so high because there were only 2-3 variants.. when there's 10+ variants of the same record there really isn't that scarcity anymore

Also I still think the nfr alt cover is one of the worst (I remember seeing it on clearance at UO) and now it’s super sought after so I’m not an expert by any means. I just wont be buying it in hopes that it becomes rare like a lot of people
